As Coach WayneFleek has said for 2 months.

Give Leal All of Cupps minutes and half of Carlyle’s minutes. Gallo should start and play as much as he’s locked in.

Fun watching Leal play hard and give a damn.

Glad Goode was hot from 3 because his defense is atrocious.

Gave up way too many open 3s and layups. They missed a ton of shots. Not much new. Ultimately our flaw on defense will be a fatal flaw. Leal helps some. Gallo couldn’t keep his guy in front. Nor could Rice. Was hoping on 1 on 1 guard defense would be improved.

I beg of Tucker to mostly abandon his midrange game and get to the freaking rack.

Agree with a lot except Gallo being locked-in and that he should get more minutes.

Before the season I thought he would be a virtual shoo-in for BT 6th man of the year but don’t think he has looked all that good the last 4 games or so. I realize he does a lot of glue guy, doesn’t show up in the box score stuff, but tonight he played 19 minutes with 2 points, 1 rebound, 4 turnovers and zero assists.

Yeah.  We generally get 11 non-conference games.  IMO at least 5-6 of those should be against similar competition level.  8-9 cupcakes doesn't do any good longer term.

I would say at most there are 7 teams that would fall in the ‘cupcake’ region.  Three teams in B4A and South Carolina I would not call cupcakes.

Which is exactly where we are.  What if we replaced a couple of cupcakes with ND or Butler, maybe a Dayton, or Loyola.   Mix it up a little.

They were 129 on Kenpom heading into the game. I wouldn't consider anything inside of 150 a cupcake, just my opinion though.

Metrics definitely tell part of the story, but it’s not the only story. That team played like doodoo… maybe they’re better most of the time. Still just doesn’t inspire much real confidence.

Sure "cupcake" may be the wrong word, but definitely not the caliber you want to measure up to.

Was looking for positives in the game, particularly whether/to what extent we utilized outside shooting.

3-point shooting/offensive scheme:

Early into the game and leading into end of the first half we were shooting a high percentage (on volume) of 3-pointers, it was close to 50% of our shots, and especially bc of Goode we were hitting at a really high percentage.

That volume dropped, we ended up shooting 15 of 55 total shots, from the arc (at 47% shooting), so about 28% on volume. That's not too shabby but especially considering how well we were shooting the 3 (thanks, Goode) we should have continued to shoot a higher volume of 3's, and absolutely need to going forward.

If Goode has now found his stroke, we should be running plays / actions to get him looks - he should get decent minutes and looks. Bako will be hitting regularly, and guys like Rice and Gallo will hit on and off.

An extremely basic concept for Woodson: You can't win consistently playing a 2-point game against a 3-point game, as in the game most NCAA teams and clearly B1G teams, run. Downplaying outside shooting, or not making it a key part of your offense, is simple ignorance. If we emphasize the 3 more we will win more games. If we don't, we will lose more games. This isn't rocket science.

Jakai / dark horse stuff:

In limited minutes (just 4), Newton looked good. Athletic, our only possible above-the-rim player. If he gets and stays healthy, he can add another level to this team.

Tucker was productive from the floor, got to the line, and pulled in 3 assists (zero TO's). 8 points in 28 minutes wasn't significant in this game, and his D needs work, but he's a guy whose game looks like it will continue to grow into the year, and a guy with next-level ability. He really needs to develop an outside shot, and Woodson probably isn't doing jack to get him there, hope he's working on it, his mid-range game is already sweet.

15 attempts on average would put us nearly last in D1. So I agree with your overall point…as do 99% of Hoosier fans at this juncture.

Goode finding 7 attempts is about right for a backup that gets hot. Getting 4 for Mbako is not enough considering how good he is from there. He should be averaging about 7 attempts given our makeup and his ability.

Rice and Galloway have to get more looks. No idea if Carlye can shoot the 3 and Tucker is a midrange guy so they help very little in that regard.

Personnel , lineups, style…whatever. It’s clear that Woody has little intention of changing things to emphasize outside shooting more.

The "new" offense looks a lot like the old offense. It's a mystery why Mullins chose UConn over IU.

Or McNeely.

Weirdly we still got a good player in Tucker out of it, but he’s not a 3pt shooter and kind of gives us more interior scoring. I guess Woody is a known quantity in the recruiting world.

Yeah, him too. I mentioned Mullins because he supposedly saw a practice with IU's "new" and "improved" offense with more outside shooting before deciding he didn't want to play in it.

Read on X where over the past two yrs when Leal had 22 or more mins of playing time, we were 6-0 and 5 of those games were B1G games.  Wow.

As Todd Leary has said numerous times. Good things happen when Leal is on the floor. I’d play the kid, what do we have to lose?

For some reason, MW don’t want to play him big minutes
