I hope we give Goode time to get his shot falling, but when it's not falling, Gallo should be getting more of his run. Him, Rice and Carlyle need a lot of time PT.

In a game that is in the balance, you probably would have seen Galloway getting a lot more minutes than he had tonight.  Cupps and Hatton probably would have not seen the court.  It's one reason that I don't like NET's offensive efficiency.

Our pre-B1G SOS is going to be atrocious. Will matter come seeding time, and puts more pressure on winning against competitive teams in conference.
It's cupcake city baby

Guess we are in survive and advance mode now, good for the tournament

As we learned last year with Army, FGC and Wright State…just beating these teams is not enough. You have to make it a blowout. A a 19 point win will probably lose us a spot or two in our metics rankings against a team with a 300 + kenpom ranking.  We went 3-0 against those teams mentioned above…but  because none were blowouts, we dropped around 30 spots between those games in kenpom

Great win for first game.

Lots to build on.

The FMW thread restarting is predictable and pathetic.

Why do you care about what that thread is doing so much? Furthermore, why are you bringing it up here? This is the game thread, not the "talk about other threads" thread. That thread hasn't been threaded yet.

Metrics won’t drop us too badly, but a 25+ win would have given us a boost.

Yes , that thread has bled over to this one.

Seems like a lot of long faces over a 19 point win.  Would you have more comfortable with the Pom prediction of a 24 point win?

The bottom line is that you can't just eke out wins like IU did last year.  19 point wins v 24 point wins.....kind of meh difference.

Anyway, the positives and negatives I saw:

The defense -- especially the on ball perimeter defense -- was outstanding.  I'm used to hearing about us getting burnt by 'some unknown player' from deep.  SIUE shot 19% from deep and just 35% overall.

IU seemed to have found something with the PNR in the second half.  I know it's SIUE, but the PNR was working regardless of who IU was running it with.

Carlyle defense is outstanding.

Free throws:  82% at 14 of 17.

Obviously MM's performance.  And his shot looked so smooth tonight.

The negatives --

Defensive rebounding was poor.  16 offensive boards is waaayyyyy too many.  Have to a better job of corralling those.

Way too many turnovers.

Luke Goode's shot.  Not sure what is up with that.  You can certainly blame Woodson for our shooting woes, but Goode had two really good looks and missed them.  Looks like it's a little in his head right now.

Carlyle needs to get started offensively.  IMO we need to get him moving to the bucket more.

-----------------

One final note:  it does take time for new players to asymalate.  Worth noting the returning players (Mgbako, Reneau, and Galloway) were a combined 20 of 28 from the floor (5 of 7 from three) while the new players were 10 of 29 and 1 of 9 from three.

We beat those three teams by 6,8,9. I would think (hopefully as I don’t know for sure) that a 19 point win will be much less detrimental than those 6/8/9 wins.

And serious discussions about cliff marshall need to happen.

Although Payton Sparks isn't here anymore, he could be another example. The other night I saw a couple comments from BSU fans saying he put on a ton of muscle in the time he was here and now he looks slow and awkward.

Rating only slipped 2. Not horrible. But not a great performance except MM. He was great. Rice needs to clean it up, Ballo needs to get it going earlier. Goode needs to make shots. Gallo looked slower and rusty but made a lot of plays down the stretch. Some not so great things, but the talent level and guard defense is much improved. Woody will need to shorten the bench per usual.

Purdue won by 17 and everyone said they looked rough. And rightly so.

I'm not all that worried about our talent, although the 3 thing is like a nagging injury that never heals. The more annoying thing is the negative quirks of woodys philosophy. Whereas the Tenn exhibition made me think he’d shifted gears on some strategic things tonight  made it seem like he’s only made a few small tweaks.

What I can tell is our head coach, Mike Woodson, wants this team to get out and run. He probably sees that other teams will struggle to keep up with this team’s makeup and playmaking ability. On top of that, he probably does believe that they should shoot the 3 more, have the confidence to do so in transition, and get more shots up in general.

When we see Mgbako shoot no hesitation and cash them like it was nothing like we did tonight, it’s evidence of where this team goes when the pieces are all working together.

Mike Woodson is not a fool of a head coach. I think he knows basketball and that players have to have confidence (like a Pro) to go out there and play. Undoubtedly, this is not the pros but the mindset can be the same. The success of Woodson-led teams is linked with their pro-mindedness makeup and talent. He has to have playmaking for his play style philosophy to work, and now he has his best-constructed roster for his vision to date

Rice is arguably his best floor general and he is cut from a different cloth. Carlyle is no slouch and if you can imagine him getting buckets then his value is ridiculously good for this team. Mgbako looked unbelievable shooting and can only keep stacking. He’s improving and that’s tremendous because he has the tools and traits to raise things up high by himself alone. Reneau and Ballo have yet to be mentioned, and, yet, they create their own nightmares for opponents. You have to have them start because one demands attention and the other will make you pay if you don’t give him enough.

How lucky is this team to have Reneau (who should go on to have a very good NBA career like TJD).

Reneau in his third year is looking to make a jump in his game much like TJD did with his own in his first year with Coach Woodson, which was also Year 3. His stroke looks smoother and it’s just a matter of getting his legs beneath his jump shot before he really takes off. You can see him building his confidence.

Like Reneau, his teammates are not Pros yet (for some), and that is the obvious-but-overlooked difference for Woody-led teams now vs. the pros. He knows the pro-game and his goal is to assemble as close to pro-level lineups as possible in all facets of the game in college.

Whether it works or not is yet to be determined as his 4th season’s just now here  Yet after tonight there is no question if this is his best assembled team for his vision.

He appears eager to get out in transition and stay in front defensively.

My take from last night’s tip is he featured Ballo to start because he needs his big guy to buy into him fully since he demands A Lot from that position, especially defensively, and it’s a Long season.

While they figure it out together, this team has enough talent and play making ability to win. So we *should* expect them to get to Big Ten play undefeated. Even if they did lose one, it would not cause me to panic because the makeup of this team appears much stronger than years past.

We are lucky as fans to get to watch this kind of talent on our team, and it does not appear to be stopping any time soon because before we look too far into the future, we have this team.

The 125th team.

Go IU.

Should I be impressed or depressed? MM obviously a bright spot. FT’s better. TO’s no bueno. Some of the game had a familiar vibe of different year but SOS.

”Cupcakes” should play like cupcakes. However, it seems when they play in the Cathedral of basketball against the IU lore, they get all xtra juiced up and play better than they really are.

Hope we develop a killer instinct and put teams away this year.

Regardless, GO HOOSIERS!

IU would not be favored against Gonzaga or Arizona in Atlantis, should they get to play them.

Literally all basketball programs weight train. This is the most moronic claim I see every year.

Definitely do but his method may be the wrong approach if it’s been a trend since he’s been here

We dropped 3 spots. You are correct though in terms of beating these teams by a lot. It raises your metrics significantly. Instead of winning by 30 and going up around 5 spots we drop 3. That’s a 8 spot difference. A missed opportunity. Again, Woodson should ask Cig about this…pummel teams and you rise drastically.
