What I don't understand is that everyone knows we are desperate for some talent, so we have to overpay, except for our staff. Agents know this. I feel like we are penny pinching sometimes when it is time, or maybe that was just the case for Estellia. But we had an in for him, we did everything to land him, and then we balked at the price.

Sherril sure does have a lot of schools on his list for a do-not-contact tag. Duke and Michigan St scare me for him.

Hopefully, good news is coming soon

I think about this too, and I hope deep in my core that there is a list of guys they would make the exception for. Maybe Estrella just wasn’t high enough on their list?

If someone like Sherrill or Burton says he wants an extra 1m and we balk at that, then I’d be really worried.

My hope (copium) is they got a new price for Estrella and thought, "We'd rather pay Sherrill 4m than Estrella 3.5m"  and we pony up for Sherrill.

Dangerous game to play though if you end up with neither.

That's more than likely the case or they knew they can get someone like Fru for $3million. Fru and Estrella have near identical player profiles. Same size, same body, similar athleticism. Production almost identical with Fru being lower usage player. Fru has a slightly better DReb rate while Estrella a slightly better OReb rate. Fru's block rate nearly 3x better than Estrella.

Sometimes on overpay is warranted, not sure Estrella is in this case, especially if they have interests in similar profiles that will command less money.

It's been hard to keep up with everything but do I remember correctly that Estrella has had some foot issues and if so, maybe that's why we weren't willing to go all in?

He missed basically all of the season two years ago so i can see why we’d be hesitant but he’ll probably be amazing for dusty

I just thought Estrella was one because he and Rod are so close.

I'm not letting myself envision a future with Sherrill at all.

That dude is going to be expensive, plus I only see him going to a proven winner.

We need a successful season in the worst way.

This is how I feel about Sherrill, would love to have him of course but don't see it happening.

Hopefully it's not a situation where we passed on Estrella because of injury / cost profile, chased Sherrill and missed, and in the meanwhile someone like Fru's price goes from 3M to 3.5-4M causing us to whiff on him too.

im not sure if this is real but good for providence if it is going all in with a first year coach

Providence got $10M+ for their roster per reports.  Big push for the new coach I guess.  Probably why we see them popping up in different places this portal.

Why overpay for a big that missed a year with a foot injury and then the following year missed more games? To overpay and spend 1/4 of the NIL funds on an injury prone big is super risky. And foot injuries for bigs is something that can be career lingering. Before he chose Michigan I said I would be cautious of paying so much for Estrella. I think it would be better spent elsewhere. Good player, but not worth the risk. Imagine paying him 3.5-4 mil, 1/3 of our nil budget, and then he has a foot issue and misses half the season. We would be screwed.

Plus Hodgson is a good recruiter and stuff

James Franklin 2.0. For those that don’t know, James Franklin when he took the PSU job said he wouldn’t hire an assistant that didn’t have an attractive wife. Because a man with a hot wife can recruit.

MSU has the perfect role, coach, and track record of success.

And we wouldn’t be the only school willing to match financial offers like similar lesser programs.

To me this seems like wasted effort by the staff—I don’t see any path here.

We did the zoom. That isn’t that big of a waste. Duke is doing an in person this weekend and their people are going to sell him on a role to come off the bench. That would be a waste of time imo.

Likely put a lot of work in to earn the Zoom opportunity. We would have loved to get an in-person I’d assume. Instead, we’re a cursory outside chance that has no real chance.

We aren’t like Michigan, that has player agents coming to them. We’re more likely a well-financed non-option that can raise the bidding market.

To me the most viable path to success is finding athletic prior underachievers like Mustaf and developing them. The Dukes and Michigans don’t need to roll the dice on a kid like that.

I somewhat agree, but also the defending national champs and one of the best coaches in the country just did it, and I feel good about it. I think IU overthinks things sometimes. Then we ned up with rosters like we had this year.
