Simply not true. You don’t think Mgbako developed over the year? TJD didn’t develop? Reneau from year 1 to 2? If you said they didn’t develop then you should check your motives for why you believe what you do. I’m saying this as someone who would have been 100% behind a change for someone like Bruce Pearl.

Would Cupps been better at Purdue or IU this year? Would Banks been better at UConn or IU? Would MM been better at UConn or IU? Would Ware been better at Purdue or IU? Bates? Gallo? Leal? It’s a matter of opinion….

If anything I'd argue UConn and Purdue are successful because they run systems that fit their players well (hide weaknesses too)... not that they're so far and away better at developing players into pros.

Can you show me the deal they signed and full terms? I'm going to guess if he felt that this staff did not have a credible chance of developing him/getting him to the pros, he would have gone somewhere else, even if they were paying less. 500-600k vs 750k is not such a huge difference that it negates all other considerations. Still a ton of money especially at that age. Would you take a job at a company you knew you had no growth potential in AND was also a sinking ship in its market for just a slightly higher salary?

If I planned on being there one year no matter what…. Most money….

And there is my main problem… there is a difference between winning college basketball games and developing promised players into pros…

Message board crap like this gets posted and everyone accepts it as gospel.  I seriously doubt anyone who actively posts on btb knows exactly.  Somewhere someone says I heard x dollars and then it becomes xx and so on like the kids game of telephone.  I've stopped drinking the Kool Aid.

That is coming from multiple national guys…. Sleepers Media was the most recent….it was basically McNeely’s deal

I agree there is a difference between winning CBB games and developing guys into pros but... that is a totally different conversation than your statements that IU does not develop players or have the track record for a kid like Tucker.

The obsession some have with what’s going into these kids’ pockets is disgusting

They are professional athletes now. In a few years a lot of them will be making over a million a year. IU has bragged about its NIL size…and they are taking advantage of it. I am fine with it. No difference in this and Ohtani signing with the Dodgers….it is what it is…

I think it is important here to make the distinction on who developed. TJD, JHS, KW, MR (so far), MM (so far) are all great examples. They are also basically the only examples. The thing they all have in common is being top-30 players. Dudes matter. I think the main point others are making about development is I could make a list just as long of players that did not get developed from the lower ranked pool we have brought in.

Yeah I don't disagree. Tucker is a top-30 guy though, so going by this distinction, the original point IndyHoops was making about IU's staff not having the track record for a guy like Tucker, is just incorrect. I agree you'd probably have a longer list of the lower rated guys we brought in who have not developed here. I think that has a lot to do with A) scouting/evaluating them incorrectly B) not setting them up for success in our system or giving them a fair opportunity to earn time/play through mistakes C) having the NBA-philosophy of trying to just land the most talent you can and figure the rest out later... leading to guys playing out of position, awkward rotations, etc. We have an identity in terms of how we play, but we don't really recruit to it very well IMO.

To be clear, I am not suggesting Indiana is a great developmental basketball program right now in any way. For top players trying to make the NBA ASAP, I think it can be an appealing destination, which was the point with respect to Tucker.

I wouldn’t totally equate UCONN’s development of players with Purdue. UCONN is using a hybrid model. Their top 2 scorers are 5th year seniors and both of them landed at UCONN via the portal.  This is the second season at UCONN for one of them while the other guy just portaled-in this season (his third school by way).

They are “old” but did UCONN really have a strong hand in developing them ?

Kudos for them for going out and getting the guards they needed.

Going out and getting the guards they needed? Now THAT sounds like a good idea.

You’re moving the goalposts. But I’ll play. How many pros has Painter developed over the last 3 seasons?

Since you look at class strength by drafts and mock drafts. UConn has what 3 pros over the last couple years. Hmmmm. Seems like Woodson and IU are putting as many guaranteed contracts in the league over the last couple years as UConn and more than Purdue. So does that mean Purdue doesn’t develop players? By the way if hope all college programs are developing players.

I don’t believe any of the players you just listed would have been better at either of those schools bc they wouldn’t have played much, if at all. Playing makes a player better so imo Cupps developed more at IU. Bates put up numbers on a terrible team. Banks is an athlete but isn’t Big Ten caliber imo. Speaking of playing MM played a lot and struggled and developed a ton over the season. So no he wouldn’t have developed more at either of those programs.

I still think Cupps will be a player. To me his biggest issue is lack of strength. Should see some improvement this coming year but probably won’t be a threat to be a Power 5 starting PG until he is an upper class men.

Do you talk about nba and mlb player contracts too? When I talk sports I don’t think I’ve ever said don’t get a player bc they cost too much money. Or this player is only coming bc of the money. Kudos to any player getting paid. This is America, let capitalism reign as far as I’m concerned.
