Out of curiosity, which part of the southeast? I only ask because I am curious about the Auburn and Alabama basketball fanbases. I have family from here in Indy who attended Auburn and they're big fans of the football program (obviously) but only recently started following and caring about basketball. Now they're rabid basketball fans, not too dissimilar to Indiana basketball fans. But their entire lives up until now they never cared about Auburn basketball; in fact, my cousin who graduated from Auburn in 2005 is still an avid IU basketball fan to this day.

Do you see this sort of excitement for college basketball happening down there? Even if you're not in/near Alabama, I bet you encounter a decent amount of SEC basketball fans. I'm just curious what the excitement level is for the sport and if it's anything like what it is in Indiana -- and by extension the Midwest as a whole. Given this past season in particular, I feel like there would be a huge wave of basketball excitement gripping the region.

North Carolina.
So the only SEC fans I ever see are a few transplanted Alabama fans and a friend that went to Clemson.  They have miraculously become huge bball fans.  Think of IU suddenly being rabid football fans.  Same story with the script flipped.  Always easy jumping on the wagon for a winner.  Difference for them currently is they get to cheer for both at a high level.  Hoping we get to soon. They still stack football first, doubt that will ever change.

I worked in Alabama for a while, the football fandom is on another planet from anything I’ve seen.  It’s their college and pro team combined.  EVERYBODY there reminds me of this board, LOL

living in the heart of ACC bball country….well that’s a different story all together…

The confirmed list of who we’ve contacted is still very short at this point, at least with what you can find thats publicly available.

I’m getting the feeling CDD likes to keep it in a VERY close circle.

I also look how the NFL free agency goes and the first couple of days teams go hog wild and spend a lot of money. It seems like the teams that spend heavily early are the bad teams who have a lot of salary cap to spend. A lot of those signings don't work and the teams that are patient and wait until the prices go down are the the teams who win. I think this is what happens in the portal as well. With the rumor of the money that is being put out there then I rather wait until the huge spending is over.

I would put Woodson's tenure as those bad NFL teams who spend wildly without a plan so they fail.

Who are the college basketball teams in this scenario?
Michigan, Louisville, Creighton?

NC is certainly a different part of the southeast than I was thinking of, haha. Definitely basketball country.

I lived in Virginia for a while. There's Alabama fans everywhere it seems. Back when I lived there it was still firmly a football school with a dysfunctional basketball program. Virginia basketball was very good at the time but people where I lived (45 minutes from Charlottesville) seemed totally disinterested.

I agree and I am okay with this. Goodman said something the other night on F68 that I don't agree with. Said if Tucker is your 1st/2nd guy your team probably won't be good. Said if he's your 3rd/4th option, you can have a stacked team. Does he not realize Tucker was in the discussion for All-American at Drake? He probably makes it this year if he 's healthy.

How many games of his have you watched?  I have been looking for games and watched the game vs Gonzaga last night. So far I don’t see him as an all American level, maybe not Danny Wolf level but definitely really good. He is such a good passer that you would really benefit if you had him as one of your best but not necessarily your best.

Read that Gillespie got $3m from Tennessee. No clue if it’s true but that’s at least in line with some of the crazy numbers being thrown around early on.

It gets crazier, the absolute Wild West.

This season has been the least interested I have been in college basketball and things like this will start pushing farther away from it. With the product on the court already being worse than it use to be and now the portal and NIL are making it undesirable to watch. It probably will get to a point where I will watch IU and maybe the big ten and not much else. It is like that in the NBA for me where I will watch a Pacers game but can't remember the last time I watched a whole NBA game that didn't include the Pacers.  If I wanted to watch professional basketball then I would watch the NBA

This is basically my take as well. I think they eventually move to player contracts and buyouts, basically just admitting this is pro sports, but for now it’s becoming a sub-par NBA instead that risks losing what’s special about college basketball.

I realize that Cooper Flagg is an outlier but it’s kind of funny that we thought IU had one of the biggest bags of all time last season, at 6mm, while Duke was paying Flagg 4.8 and you know their other 5* dudes were all getting 7 figures.
Would not surprise  me if their team payroll is in the 15+ million range.

Remember when we called them STUDENT-athletes?
