IUBB vs Penn St - Thursday, 03.14.24 @ 9PM on BTN

Recommended Posts

Still picture of Reneau's shot.  Triple drag had Ware, Reneau, and Mgbako as options.  Ball went to Reneau.  Could have passed to Ware and probably should have but look how the Penn State player is just holding him.....not sure how that wasn't a foul.  You can also see that the Penn State player had better position than Leal but Leal hustled while the Penn State guy got caught ball watching.

In conference games we are now 11-10.

1-6 without Xavier Johnson, 10-4 with him.

While correlation is not causation, that seems like a pretty convincing correlation.

I'm kind of amused that there's disagreement over whether a team with only 4 scholarship guards, 1 of whom is redshirting, is better when the most experienced and explosive one on the roster is healthy.

It’s okay to say that Woody is too old, that recruiting has been zeroed out, that you think there are better choices, and that he’s got this team ABSOLUTELY COOKING.

Five in a row in conference by a team that was left for dead and would have quit if they weren’t playing for each other and believing in the coaching staff (ahem … contrasted with Kevin Willard and Steve Pikell).

That. Is. Impressive.

Baldwin picked a bad, bad moment to ball watch.

Ware had two guys boxing him out; Baldwin was not “ball watching.” He was looking to his right.

He was “Ware watching.”

Is there a rumor about Gallos injury? I heard there was but not sure what that person was talking about.

Rumor since Sunday is a meniscus tear. Again, you can play on a tear but a lot of it depends on how bad the tear is. He seemed to be moving around fine around the huddles and congratulating guys yesterday, but who knows...it could be worse than appears.

Maybe, but he lost Leal completely. That was his block out. But I guess that's why that kid gets a million deflections every game. He's hyper-focused on ball movement.

Isnt the guy from ISU playing with one right now? I heard them say he was playing through and injury and not even practicing or anything and will need surgery in the offseason

I would love to have a guard that has enough credit with the refs to where he can hack the crap out of arms while people drive by him.  Kid is an elite defender however he gets away with a lot

Swope has 2 separate, unknown knee injuries. No one knows what injuries either guy has, so they’re very different situations.

good post!

That's the name of the game, for sure.  X gets zero leeway.  Woody also seems to get less than average.  Winning teams definitely reap these advantages.

It’s almost impossible to keep Leal off the floor in big moments right now. Who would’ve ever guessed that?

(Besides the sammich himself)

Bodes really well for Cupps, another hard worker who started out not able to move well laterally on defense

Imo Cupps is going to be a solid lead guard and is the kind of player and build that will have that real frosh to soph jump- he was not ready to contribute major minutes, he’s not strong enough, and his game, imo, has been held back, not facilitated by Woodson. Come into soph year bigger, summer growth, stronger, now with the year of B1G experience— and pair him with a genuine shooting guard with the green light to rain 3’s, and drive and kick, and his soph year  should be a good one.

When we beat wisky, some people said "well, they are playing well".  We beat a Penn State team that has been playing well and it's "they suck".

If you don't want to give credit to Woodson, I'm cool with that.  Don't know how you can't be happy for the players, though.

Penn State was 5-5 in their last 10 games. They did have a win against Illinois in that span, but most of those wins were against the bottom feeders.

Today’s gonna tell us whether we’ve really turned the corner or not. Nebraska is a pretty decent team and if we beat them then, yeah, you’ve showed me something.

That is definitely not true, since we started the conference season 2-0 without him

Not sure if you are referring to me, but if so you are completely misunderstanding what I'm saying. We are definitely a better team with a healthy Xavier Johnson.

Correction!

3-6 without him, 8-4 with him.

Almost. 3-5 without, 8-5 with.

Through Feb 27 we were 3-5 in Big Ten without him, and 3-5 in Big Ten with him. Identical. Since his latest return we have run off 5 in a row. I completely agree that his return is one of the reasons why we have improved, but not that it is the only reason or even the main reason.
