Yeah, that take is beyond ridiculous.  She's saying that 'Buckner didn't have unilateral authority to hire Woodson' but now it seems he has unilateral authority in making sure he isn't fired.  I call BS.

What actually seems to be the case is that Buckner didn't NEED to utilize his unilateral authority to hire Woodson because he got enough people on board with him and now when the AD wants the coach gone and there are board members who might on be board to terminate the contract but won't for fear of repurcusions that Buckner is USING unilaterly authority to retain Woodson.

Just because Buckner didn't necessarily need to flex his authority when Woodson got hired does not mean he didn't have unilateral authority.  Having an alarm system that you don't have to use because no one tried to rob you doesn't mean you don't have an alarm system.  It just means it wasn't needed.....that night.

In terms of Glass not interviewing Woodson as a courtesy, perhaps he was wise to the fact that if he DID interview Woodson that Buckner would flex his authority.

It’s not ridiculous if you understand the culture at IU, which greatly values consensus building. The notion that Buckner is calling the shots here just isn’t correct. He has influence and plenty of gravitas, but he’s far from the only person with input. And Dolson didn’t have Woody foisted upon him. This isn’t complex. We have always been slow to fire coaches.

Yes we understand that. Decision making by consensus and lack of clear, accountable leadership is why we are where we are. It's not complex at all. It's just a social club, more or less

Did you attend IU? If so, did you ever work with or around anyone in the University administration? Were you familiar with the workings of the athletic department? The IUF?

I graduated from IU and was involved with the IUSF. My roommate for 2 years during that time worked for the athletic department. What's your background with IU?

We have seen the results of the approach you are talking about.

And we don't care about 'consensus building' when the consensus has produced squat.  'Consensus building' is just political talk for making sure no one individual being held to blame.  It leads to lack of individual accountability.  It silences dissension.

Pretty funny way for her to not address what's being said and deflect to.... whether I went to IU and what student organizations I participated in or jobs I had. LoL

Exactly. I think anyone who attended IU and worked around the University administration knows how they have traditionally worked.

I was attempting to see if you understood how things have worked at IU for years and years. I’m not deflecting, I’m trying to provide you with insight as to how things have historically been done. This situation is no different, regardless of whether any of us like the process or the outcome.

EXCEPT you are saying that 'Buckner doesn't have unilateral say because they operate under consensus building' and I explained how consensus building leads to people having unilateral say.  No one ever has to take responsibility for any area because those with the most interest in an area drive the decision of others and in return become amicable to the decisions that someone else has in an area of their own concern.

If Quinn Buckner does not yield that kind of power in basketball decisions, Mike Woodson never even gets interviewed.

It was many more people than Buckner who pushed forward Woody. Many more. And consensus building doesn’t lead to unilateral decision making at IU. It never has.

Sorry, don't know who you really are, but this reeks of a political answer that I would expect from an apologist of board actions that do exactly the thing you say they aren't.  Coaches like Tom Allen and Mike Woodson would never get approved by an independently thinking board.

I think you would be surprised at the level of oversight the Board provides to matters such as this. I’m neither a defender nor a critic of the approach, only one who is attempting to explain how and why decisions have been made. It’s been a time honored approach at IU for many years. In the West but I’ll call it an evening. Nice to chat with you.

If exactly what I say isn't true, tell me the number of 5-4 and 6-3 votes that have occurred until the current BOT.

My gut is telling me he's going to fix it.  I think there is going to be a "come to Jesus" moment.  Can't go into next year like this.

This is the one, tiny sliver of hope I have going forward and I don't think putting "training wheels" on Woodson (adding a coordinator or 'specialist') would be anything more than lipstick on a pig.

All this talk about us firing coaches too soon or keeping them too long wouldn't be a topic if we hadn't made bad hires in FB & BB every time for the last quarter of a century.
