They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread

I also find it interesting that many here (not necessarily you) are putting Stevens and Dusty May in the category of "home run hires" and "big dogs"... and Dolson missed on Stevens (and Pearl) last year. Buckner had agreed to let Woodson go if Dolson could lock down a big name coach... Dusty was on the table, and is now considered a prime target, but it wasn't good enough for Buckner last year when it was significantly more possible.

After hiring Cignetti, and with Buckner (hopefully) out of the way, I am willing to sit back and let Scott Dolson do what he's paid to do - hire coaches...

Buckner didn't approve of Pearl. Dolson didn't miss on him. Buckner didn't think Dusty was good enough either. Brad said the time wasn't right.

Fans thinking we'd get Stevens is how we got Woodson?

Thanks Matty. Great idea. Coach Woodson wishes you good luck with the big game tonight

Lol. Hey I'm just saying it would be the ultimate Troll to Purdue fans if he flipped. I hate Purdue but I can't deny Painter is the best coach in the Big Ten.

I don't think we missed on Pearl from what I was told. Buckner just vetoed it.

I know. It would never happen. I also felt like building off of the Matty cameo Woodson got tricked into doing lol

Playing devils advocate… if Dolson is “falling” for Stevens - swinging for home runs and missing - that’s definitely a factor in how we ended up with Woodson. If some narratives are to believed, striking out on Stevens last time was all the opportunity Buckner needed to railroad his guy in there. I get people who are over the idea of Stevens at this point and need to see it to believe it. Definitely worthwhile for Dolson to stay engaged with Stevens hoping the timing works out. But prioritization and timing and anticipating internal obstacles needs to be better this time around.
Exactly my point.

We have limit ourselves because we don't dare touch guys like pearl or beard. We are to darn holy for them.

That was likely just a cop out by Buckner.  He knew they probably couldn’t get Stevens and Dolson would never be allowed to hire Pearl.

I completely understand that it was manipulation by Buckner, but my point is that Indiana didn't get May last year and now he's one of the top two names on almost everyone's list.. and while I'd love to see Dusty at Indiana, I am not sure how viable it really is. What a difference one year makes.

Pessimists don’t accomplish greatness, optimists do.

HIRE BRAD STEVENS
Pessimism vs reality are two different things. A 25 year record of horrible hires is reality. Dolson is now on the prove us wrong stage.

I don't know what NBA GM's make but is it in the 10-12 million range?

A really big name can command that. Phil Jackson to the Knicks. Reilly was given ownership in the Heat. Rare. But that’s why in the previous post about leverage I said i didn’t know if he was quite at that level.

Honestly, the best way for Stevens to get there if new ownership really wants him would be to leverage a huge IU offer and hold that over their heads. It would also explain why from the IU side there “appears “ to be interest again.

Here's the problem. The Celtics are for sale. Anytime a new owner comes in there's a chance they will want their own front office people. The other thing is the Celtics have a very expensive roster that doesn't have much wiggle room. They are over the second apron with restricts what kind of moves they can make with their roster. Next year they are losing key pieces and some pieces are getting older. They will have an even more expensive roster next year with very little flexibility. There's a good chance they are headed towards having to trade some dudes and rebuild in the very near future. If that isn't done right Boston will be up in arms.

all of those points are valid - but during the warriors run with klay, steph, KD, Green and others, they made decisions on the fly and they did just fine with little cap flexibility at the highest available apron but kept pieces moving.  i don't see why boston couldn't replicate it over the next 3 or 4 years.  Now, of course a new owner throws a curveball so i suppose stevens could elect to take the safer route of the two now that he's won at the highest level of basketball in the NBA.

A name that I don't believe will be considered but he has been mentioned on other boards, mostly in passing. Probably not related to the IU search but Jeff Rabjohns has pointed him out specifically on a few occasions...again, probably just because his team plays good basketball. Randy Bennett at St. Mary's. The time for him to make a move was probably a few years ago but the Gaels are always fun to watch and if I am not mistaken, they have won 15 straight road games and are now 19-3. It doesn't seem to matter what resources he has or what roster he has, St. Mary's keeps winning and gets to the tournament. Now, exempting the blowout of King Woody, they have not had much success in the Big Dance but they usually have a large athletic disadvantage no matter who they get matched up with in the second round. Anyway, he has an interesting resume and if IU misses on Brad Stevens and Dusty May...number three on the list would be a mystery.

I don’t think he’s ever lived east of the Rockies. Agree he is a good coach tho

Has Stevens ever had to handle a full blown rebuild as a front office executive? Not saying he couldn't do it but he walked into a nice situation.

Technically as coach, right? But he stepped in and their young guys were competitive right away. NBA fell in love with him as much as the college world pretty quickly.

You guys still speculating on Brad Stevens?  I told you, he's going to be the interim after Woodson gets fired in about 2 weeks. :)

But what if we start to do good?  We will be forced to hire him for good!
