They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread

Two words: Mike Woodson.

His style is antiquated, his delivery is abrasive, his humility is non-existent, his understanding of how to build a roster simply stupid. He's incompetent, cannot read a room (or chooses not to), he is divisive, and he's protected by Buckner. That protection makes every other negative characteristic moot, as there are no consequences for any of his actions. He has offered a reported 31 players, but hasn't bothered to build relationships with any of them, their families or their coaches. He's someone that no one wants to play for, unless they are paid obscene amounts of money.

I don't see the portal approach being much different. The key is the Cook's and the Simons' open checkbooks.

I keep wondering how he isn't beyond embarrassed.  If our boosters are putting more money in   NIL because our coach is so incompetent,  we have to throw even MORE money at players to beg them to play for Woodson.  I mean he HAS to know why our NIL is going up.  I can't imagine having a job where my bosses tell me I suck at my job and no one wants to be near me at work, so they'll pay extra to find coworkers who will put up with me.  I'd die of embarrassment.

I guess he really can't read a room, and he doesn't have any humility.  Bad combination that is.

I think he truly looks at it like a business no different than the NBA. I doubt he sees high school recruiting the way most coaches do.

If the past 3 years has shown us anything, it's that he doesn't see anything the way most coaches do. He just wants to sit in his ivory tower, sipping wine and smoking his cigars and explaining to us that he's right, he's doing his job and that because we dare to criticize or question him that we are not true fans. The audacity.

Furthermore, I don't care that he played here 40 years ago. I don't care that he had a mediocre career as a coach in the NBA. He can't/won't recruit, and he's a really bad college coach who surrounds himself with flunkies that tell he what he wants to hear. And he feels entitled to coach here 4 years despite all of his flaws and warts. He was "hurt" when we hired Archie over him, despite him having ZERO qualifications to coach any college team, let alone at a P4 school.

Someone needs to tell him that the emperor is naked, and it's a pretty ugly look.

Also it cracks me up when he says we need more talent, but then begs the current players to stay. Never says we have talent but I haven't put them in a position to succeed
Yep we need more talent but I gave Leal a 300% raise to stay. Lol.

My concern is unless next year is a repeat of this one, then I fully expect them to bring him back and set the program even further back then they already did.

It's to the point where we can't get any other coaches so might as well keep Woody for one more year

Unless it's a repeat of this year I don't see it being just one. Even a repeat of his first year where we barely make the tournament then gets whooped I see them making excuses to keep him.

Not sure I agree with that one.  I think it’s at the point where the actual people in charge think that Woody deserves to be here 1 more year.    Too many good coaches that would crawl to Bloomington if they were offered yesterday.  By good coaches I mean any good young or old college  coach would do it just might not be the big name or shiny name the fan base wants and craves.

Sorry I was just being a little too sarcastic. Yes there are many good coaches out there that I would help them move to Bloomington to be the coach.

I'll have one name as beautiful and shiny as a pearl please and thank you. :-)

This is my biggest concern.  What are the expectations that Woodson needs to meet?  Is the bar so low that just making the tournament is good enough?  You have to move on or extend him after next year and I'm worried about the wrong decision from this administration.

Well they've made the wrong one twice when it comes to him, no reason to expect they'll get it right next year.

So let’s fast forward. Assuming May takes a new gig and wouldn’t want to leave after a year at a big program. Who is on your list in 12 months? Any guys that continue to build their resume? I’ll give my list. 2 tiers

Tier 1(make it a point not to get past this list) no particular order

Bruce Pearl, TJ Otzelberger, Shaka Smart, Tony Bennett, Scott Drew

Tier 2 - this group would need to prove themselves again next year with consistency, but could make the discussion

Micah Shrewsberry, Josh Schertz, and a wild card for me is Will Wade. Don’t think IU would ever touch him but same stuff Sean Miller and Self were involved in. And he’s still very young at 41. He’s going to get another chance somewhere.

I would remove Tony Bennett and Bruce Pearl from the list for next year. Probably even Scott Drew just because it sounds like Louisville made him a generous offer and he said no if Dusty gets the job.

No way IU goes after Will Wade even though everything he did is legal now.

Just not sure what are choices are.
