Fire Coach Woodson Thread

For me Woodson is clearly the problem, but it’s not his fault. The difference?

A guy like him should have self-belief and should be honored to get a very well paid dream job at his alma mater that he loves dearly. And he was and is.

But that doesn’t make him good enough or the right choice.

Buckner should never have hired him. He could have found another way to honor his playing days, but giving any unsuccessful NBA coach with zero college experience the keys to the kingdom was a massive error in judgment. No one was burning a path to Mike's door with coaching job offer in hand... should have been a clue.

Woodson is a thief and Buckner is guilty of malfeasance. No one will ever change my mind about that.

Pretty sure that's the same guy that kept blaming the fans last year for players missing FTs.

It's never at all anything to do with Woodson, always has someone else to blame.

His narrative wasn't working, so he decided to change the narrative.

IU Football was broken too before Cig got there.

There is nothing that is happening on the court that is anything more than lack of effort, motivation, planning, and tactical advantage. That is coaching.

Nah, it’s 100% his fault. Effort is something you have complete control over. Woodson puts zero effort into his job. He can’t put together a competent team despite having a blank check to do so because of his lack of effort. He’s not getting a pass for that.

Too bad we don’t play at Rutger this year. The aliens could make Dolson’s job WAY easier.

Aliens seek intelligent life forms they can learn from. If they want to learn about cigars, whiskey and making tee times Miserable Mike might be in danger, but if they invade the RAC looking for knowledge of 21st century basketball, Woeful Woody would be safe.

Sorry my hypotheticals don’t deal in outdated sci-fi propaganda. The aliens would take Woody and that’s the end of it.

Seems to me that the above post is partially correct.  And so is Stuhoo's post.

It is kind of a chicken and egg thing.

Why would Coach Woody fail on court?  Why would Coach Woody be hired then fail on court?

Both points of view have merit.

The Board of Trustees, Quinn Buckner and Dolson all have roles.  Seems to me they all failed in selecting Coach Woody relative to the on court coaching stuff.

Keep in mind, though, they just may have a different agenda.  Not just winning basketball may be the goal.  They probably wanted to reconnect with alums and previous basketball players.

So to fans, it appears to fail with respect to the W/L and NCAAT criteria.  But to others, it may be a bridge to a more strategic vision.

I just do not know the puts and takes on the Board of Trustees mandating Woody's hire and whether AD Dolson would really just roll over.  Heck, if Glass'* pick of Archie Miller blew his powder...this time, maybe, the tradeoff was it would be Quinn Buckner's turn to pick a HC.  (Remember when Herbert allegedly mandated that Kelvin Sampson be hired.  And oversite was lacking.  Another tradeoff?)

There likely is a lot of stuff decided out of our view.  I'm still chagrined about the last 5 basketball coach hires and extreme mismanagement of the program.  Maybe there is light at the end of the season.

Dolson knows how to bring in $$$$s. Alums got stroked by connecting with history of the program.   Dolson has proven adept at hiring the HC in football.  May that process bring a winner within the next 5 months.

While the football program, this season, has caught lightening in a bottle...may that continue.

Now for my old guy perspective:  RMK was our lightening in a bottle.

Personally, I lost a lot of love and interest in football...primarily because of Indiana's football program from the mid-70's on...except for a couple of seasons.

I still like basketball more...and miss the old days of man-to-man, and X's and O's, defense, getting to the line, players with roles, and great competition in the Big Ten.   Remember when Bob Knight benched his 5 starters?

*Corrected...thanks KYsux...see post below.

https://bleacherreport.com/articles/1958916-the-time-has-come-for-new-york-knicks-to-fire-mike-woodson

The sad part is none of what we are talking about in regards to MW in regards to style of play on both sides of the ball is not unique to his tenure here. This article is from a couple months before he and his entire staff were fired by Phil Jackson. The arguments are so similar its eerie-- particularly his adherence to humongous lineups and bad defense. QB knew this stuff, so did basically anyone with access to google, and yet, here we are.

More from the NBA on MW in direct quotes:

"I mean, again, certain strategies were placed upon us with Coach Woodson. There were times when we didn’t quite buy into it and as a result of that, we lost games." -Amare Stoudemire, a week before his firing.

Stop me if you have heard something like this before:

“Am I the guy for the job? I’m the only guy for this job,” Woodson reiterated. “I’ve always said that. And I don’t mean that in a braggadocios way. I feel good about what I do as a coach. I know the system works." -Mike Woodson, before his firing.

Sounds like a hump that couldn't be scaled, Zaza Pachulia after his ouster in Atlanta:

"We grew up as a team and as players. He helped a lot of players get better," Pachulia told the AP. "But when you get better, you want even more. I think we're in the stage now where it's not about progress. It's about winning a championship."

Here is gem from Atlanta Constitution journalist Jeff Schultz (who Atlanta Hawks PR eventually had to intervene for because Woody would not answer his questions; presumably he was not a true fan of Atlanta Hawks basketball, but I digress):

“All I can say is for a tough guy who played for a tough coach, he’s one of the most thin-skinned, insecure people I’ve ever met.”

Good catch.  I forgot.

I believe that Dolson was helping provide the short list to the Recommendation Committee (ie one of the team for the hired search & vetting consulting firm).  If I remember correctly.

No one believes that your “obligations” happen to pop up every single time the King’s team takes a dump on the court.

But yes, I chose to do other things rather than watch Nebraska stomp IU by double digits for the fourth consecutive time.

Believe what you want.

Really stretching to make your point.

Just ignore me if I annoy you so much

I believe there were also people from his Atlanta days saying he was very stubborn so he refused to listen to ideas from assistant coaches and refused to make changes.

I don’t find you annoying at all. It’s just amusing, that’s all.

The Fire Mike Woodson train has plenty of room for new passengers whenever you decide to hop on board.

On 11/28, you said this:

”Nine straight. That’s my benchmark. Any slip ups and time to move on”

Any slip ups and time to move on - and we didn’t just slip up, we completely quit in the last 7 minutes. Ended the game on a 17-1 run by Nebby - the same Husker team that lost to Sparty by 37 the game before.

Do you still defend this? Not asking to be snarky or “call you out” but, my God, if Friday doesn’t kill what support you have left, what will?

No don’t defend this.

And as I have said a while back, since you guys like to bring back my old posts to try to catch me …

I have been trending towards a replacement for a bit. But what I won’t do is participate in any character assassination of either Woodson or Buckner. People can express their dissatisfaction with their abilities or lack thereof without being disrespectful.

I guess since socials thrive on anonymous people saying things they’d never say to someone in person I shouldn’t expect anything better
