Fire Coach Woodson Thread

No thanks. I think if he gets year 5 I'm done even following iu anymore. I'd need to find a serious program to root for.

I never would probably quit on iu but to say a year 5 would test that would be a understatement! I would love to get back to being excited for iu basketball again. The last 8 years have certainly gotten me used to watching us lose

Well yeah they can lol. Our plan of letting shooters have good looks and hope they miss only works every now and again

Exactly!  I watched a film session on The Daily Hoosier today at lunch on all 27 of NW’s attempts!  Of the 27 attempts only about 5 or 6 were fairly contested and the rest were so open, that anyone on this board could have hit them.  Woodson is so delusional about his defense.  He actually said they played good D in the 1st half.  Of the 13 attempts only about 2 were fairly contested and defended, they just got luck and didnt make them.

Everyone was so excited to get rid of archie and start fresh. And then they hit you with the massive gut punch that they hired Woodson. I remember thinking it was a joke at first. I really thought it was satire

I see folks bemoaning the “optics” explanation. Let me simplify: IU is 14-6 (5-4). Illinois is 13-6 (5-4).

We all know Illinois is better right now, better coached, and so on. But be honest with yourself that the situation currently doesn’t look the same to a national writer/outsider/casual fan. And those things matter.

I tend to agree with you here on some level, but at a certain point "outside" optics need to stop mattering (though I could argue the booing, the bad losses, and the chants negate that argument entirely). The administration needs to be doing what is in the best interest of Indiana Basketball winning basketball games not worrying about if pundits think we fired Woody too soon. Our program is already embarrassing on a national scale, even debating the "optics" of firing a coach with his record simply reinforces the national narrative that we are not an elite program, much less a blue blood.

I believe stuhoo might have been first poster on here to mention his name in a coaching hire possibility list. I thought no way they would do that. Then it happened. I had my concerns but hoped he could use is fame to get talent and that would be enough. I believe howard was doing good at michigan at the time? I forced myself to have hope we could win on a cool laid back coach and talent. Nba connections like howard and others. Turns out coaching abilities matters. From now on anyone who says well he can't shoot for them or he didn't do that is full of it. It all starts in preparation for the season. Mental and physical abilities complimented by a good offense and defense to give them a chance. I am pretty sure woodson fails in all of those areas!

Woodson and QB (and probably others close in program) may be delusional but they are living the high life.

I'd think they make to much money to resort to High Life.

Anyone who has watched Woodson's teams realizes this. There's a reason that so many guards have amazing games against IU. It's like a game of H-O-R-S-E when they play against the Hoosiers, because they get so many wide open shots.

The games IU wins typically occur because those guards just miss those wide open looks. It doesn't mean that IU's defense was necessarily great - it just means that the other team didn't shoot well. But they still got good looks...

He also said just remember he went to the Sweet 16 to only get beat by Miami who was good that year.

The problem is Isiah that wasn't the Sweet 16

Still blows me away that we went from firing a guy who got 3 sweet 16's and 2 big ten titles in 5 years to defending a coach who's biggest achievement is almost getting to the sweet 16 once in 4 years.

Especially when the "almost" is a stretch.

Exactly. I don't care if Donna who likes Woodson because she went to school with him 45 years ago and watches 2 games year would think he got a raw deal.

And how could any of the pundits defend him at this point? Here's a preseason ranking that had us 18th, based on the sheer amount of talent we were bringing in. Now we're at or outside the top 60 in both Kenpom and Net, despite probably being top 5 in NIL spent. We're an extremely mediocre basketball team that is not improving and having off the court issues which call into quesiton how focused/locked in these players are. If pundits want to defend him, then I would question whether they have ulterior motives.

(To be clear, I'm quoting you and agreeing with your sentiments)

And the one year he was 9-11 in conference. Most years that will never get you in the ncaa. Screw the optics. Woodson needs to go now

Donna doesn’t support him because she once went to school with him.  It’s a lot dirtier than that.  Ask yourself, why did Cora Breckenridge support Mike Davis so much?

Sweet 16 is the third round, Woodson made it to the second round. Ergo, Woodson almost made the Sweet 16. It's not that hard to figure out. That wasn't even the point of my comment anyway. Good Lord people.....

A commitment today doesn’t move the needle one smidge. Year 5 for Woodson would be no different than year 1. We’ve seen the same basketball the last four years, except this year we’re seeing a more expensive product without any improvements.

Fire Mike Woodson!
