Fire Coach Woodson Thread

It’s okay to want and watch wins and not want Woodson as our coach next year. My dream scenario is that we have a good season and he retires “on top”. I understand the fear of woody doing just well enough and him returning because of it. From the sounds of if it, which i hope is true, he’ll be gone unless we have some F4 run. If we end up having a great season it will probably be due to him making some major adjustments. Just weird behavior to be upset with a loss.

i do agree my hopes are not very high very Penn state though haha

I don't know, if he makes a S16 or E8 I think he has a pretty good case to stay.

I completely get your perspective though.  For me, my only priority is Woody out, I don't think anything else matters, so I get worried if we do enough to keep him around, but what we do to keep him around isn't anything special (something like don't compete for the conference title, but win a tourney game or two).

Ideally he would announce his retirement and I could just pull for IU like usual.  Everyone wants what's best for IUBB, but the way the program is run with all the political influences, what's best for IU gets complicated, unfortunately.

The penn state game isn't even a true road game. I bet half the fans will be iu fans. And usc isnt that great. He could easily start 4-1. But if he retires doesn't he lose the buyout money? The expectations are very low even if he just makes the tourney I think that saves his job. I simply don't see quinn firing him if he wins 20 games and makes the toyrney

Please show me 12 wins?   That’s a pipe dream.

I am not expecting it at all but it is not impossible either. The BT’s highest ranked team is Oregon at #9 and we have 3 others in the top 25.  Not nearly as deep a conference as we have had in prior years.

Woodson teams have also had stretches where they have played very well. Usually late in the year after underperforming for most of the year.  There is enough talent on this team to end up with double digit wins in a conference without that many unbeatable teams.  Will they do it, unlikely but for now there is a path.  They could easily start off 4-1 in conference and perhaps that confidence leads to better performance. It could also lead to overconfidence and one of those losing streaks Woodsons team have also been known for.

Everything is a negotiation. He can "retire" as season's end and IU can give him a "care package." That way he saves face, or so he'd think, and get the extra coin; and IU gets to move on.

Woodson having and keeping the job isn't solely on Quinn. It's so much more involved than that. Also, the group that was fond of hiring him doesn't feel the same today.

I don't think it's solely on quinn but he likely has tremendous say. Plus the donors were all in on woodson or they were not giving him 6 million. Now maybe Woodson leaves on his own but forcing him out is a whole other matter.

People forget this team was picked second in the big ten so even 12 wins would be an underperformance. Finishing second probably requires like a 15-5 record or better.

Ironically, as far as contract circumstances go ZERO percent is coach Woodson’s fault.  It’s just another example of an individual taking what is given to him or her.

Don’t you think you’re being a little disingenuous, Scott?

Your 1st year listed - 2016-17 for Texas Tech, Beard’s first season in Lubbock. Building year, so understandable no NCAA.

Your 2nd & 3rd years listed - 2017-18 / 2018-19 for TT. Elite 8 and National Runner Up. Clearly, Beard has them rolling.

Your 4th year listed - 2019-20, you have No Tournament, as if they failed to make the dance. NO ONE made the dance; it was canceled! (As an aside, every bracketology prediction I checked had TT in the Tournament)

Your 5th year listed - 2020-21, lost in 2nd round. Down year, agree a string of those are unacceptable. Was a weird tournament for everyone with limited fans.

Your 6th year listed - 2021-22. That was his FIRST year at Texas. Yet you won’t acknowledge that taking over a new program needs to be viewed separately from your previous school?  Your EXACT words were “If we hire a new coach and THIS IS HIS RECORD FOR THE NEXT 7 YEARS” - as if this is a representation of his actual body of work.

Your 7th year listed - another change in school. Again, you want to count that as a continual string of performance?

And you fail to include the 7-1 start his 2nd year at Texas, which Beard had the Longhorns ranked #2 and rolling - a team that ultimately advanced to the Elite 8. Did you forget about that? What about what he’s done this year at Ole Miss - currently 11-2 and ranked in the top 25? If anything, his results from his coaching career indicates he can build a successful program rather quickly.

Listen, Beard is not my first choice. But given IU’s resources and NIL, he’d kill it here. You’re entitled to your opinion, but don’t cherry pick your facts.

All I am saying he isn't a guarantee home run. He wouldn't even be in my list due to his off court problems

If it were just his on court then I would look at him hard

My main goal is for IU to win big and make a deep run and I don't care who the coach is as long as they don't do something off the court that is bad.

I think a sweet sixeteen was the absolute expectation preseason with this team by almost everyone. A team picked to finish 2nd in the big should be making a sweet sixeteen so you are right on.

How bad has IU fallen in terms of expectations? I have friends who thought we played well last night. In fact, they thought we played well against Winthrop. I made the comment that we haven’t beaten anyone good and got the Providence game thrown back. I’m not at the point where I’m rooting for IU to lose but really hope we don’t end up squeaking into the tourney so people can say, we’re back. Either compete for a Big 10 title or suck.

The odds are really against it.  In Woodson’s best year, we lost two head scratchers at home (NW and Iowa).   We win the 8 remaining home games gets us to 10 wins.  Would need to pick up at least two on the road, and we don’t get another shot at Minn.  This team would need to do an epic turn around, Woodson would get coach of the year and an extension.  :)

Yea, our fanbase expectations aren’t very high.  We get accused of being “toxic,” but it takes a mega meltdown like last season to actually get fans online fired up.  And of course by the time that happens the media are saying the same thing.  And the actual game crowds are still supportive and no one in the program is confronted in the real world.

I guess they forgot we have the highest nil in the league and were picked to finish 2nd. Crapping it up in the Bahamas sure changed the goalposts and now beating Winthrop is playing well.

I have always contended that our fanbase accepting the mediocrity is the number one reason it’s continued.

About all fans can do is stop buying tickets or merchandise. It's the IU brain trust that keeps hiding bad coaches and refuses to move on when they should.

Agreed. But it shouldn’t take 4 years for people to do those things

Woodson got a raise for making a 68 team field. The expectations have obviously fallen pretty far.
