I think sometimes about how "close" IU was with both the Crean and Sampson eras.

If Crean could have been more consistent year to year, and better with defense and valuing the ball (and zones).

If someone at IU could have better managed the culture during Sampson's time.

Either of those periods could have been, in theory, really, really successful. Potentially, championship level success.

Excellent post.  Agree wholeheartedly.

And think if IU Administration had calmed RMK when interacting with others...especially in public or with media personnel...him coaching the Jared Jeffries team.  OMG!

Sampson can absolutely coach and recruit.  But some of his player selections...compounded by lack of discipline and monitoring...was tragic.  Man, he can get it done, though.

I know people liked Tom Crean and the play faster stuff.  But, he was not great about X's and O's.  It was just flying to the hoop.  Works very well if they are flying and not making mistakes in matchups...what tactics?

I don’t think either guy was close because all of those flaws are intrinsic to who they were/are.

I do think it is a testament to how much potential this program has that Sampson could build a championship level team in less than 2yrs and Crean could do the same from a complete rebuild in about 4.

It really shouldn’t be that hard to win here.

Yeah, he's a fun Twitter follow now and and it's great how he's embracing IU fans and his time here, but he was an absolute crazy person when he coached at IU. 2024 Tom Crean is not the same person as IU Head Coach Tom Crean.

The word I heard used several times by many was...manic. Stories of routine Late night (2:00,3:00am) calls to staff needing tape, etc. by the next morning. A mind that was working/busy constantly.

Exactly what I was referencing. Always heard the same types of things.

Staff were not allowed to leave the building until he left.

Did anyone from Crean’s staff have any success coaching after IU?

Was it true that he asked them to sleep with their phones next to their pillows in case he needed to call a meeting during the night?

I believe Tim Buckley is at South Carolina right now and I think McClain is at Texas.

I don't know that for sure. I just know that one staff member used to get upset because he was done with his work, and wanted to spend time with his family but couldn't leave Assembly Hall till after Crean left.

Gotta find a way to get the administration our of their own way.

Just think if we Kept Knight until he retired in 2008. Or at least didn't hold on to Davis.

We missed out on Sean May, Greg Oden, Mike Connley (sp), the Hummel Class that went to Purdue.

Enough Talent in the state to win another National Title. Not sure if Knight would be able to capture the success he had form 71-94, but dang would have been fun seeing some of those teams.

IU really should have had probably about 2 national Championships since 2000. What a shame....

I'm 33, and have never seen a national championship team, and frankly I don't think we'll truly ever recapture the magic. The administration has put such barriers in place to not take a risk. IU requires a change agent with a vision, but we won't make that hire.

Is it true that he didn't have a practice schedule?

Yes that’s true. You would get a call saying Coach wants to have a practice in an hour and half. Can you be there. Luckily I work on campus and can come and go. I usually only had to be there for the second half of practice. You always got a hundred dollar bill.

Mark me down as a "no" on Knight getting those guys to Indiana.  Maybe Sean May, but none of the those.  The trio of Hummel, E'Twan Moore, Scott Martin were Purdue from the get go.

I was at IU when May was as a high school senior and then at UNC as a sophomore.  I remember the contrast of of his high school car and very expensive at UNC.  UNC went all out for him.

Man talk about self inflicted.... Life's about balance... I always said Crean would literally be the best assistant in the NCAA. But as the head coach he's out of balance.... You need stability as a person first before you can have stability in a program...

back to ranting.

People who stand there in the elevator just looking at you walking up as the doors close....

Had the last laugh this morning though. Guy did that, just stood there, so I get to wait on the next elevator. It takes me up to our office floor. I get off and there the guy is in reception. He looked kind of sheepish when I gave him a good look. :)
