Dave from Dayton Posted November 26, 2023 Posted November 26, 2023 Wait! Something's happening! A decision? There's crimson smoke over the football stadium. What can it mean? Tom Allen is history? A new HC decision? Black helicopters? Drones? What's the buzz? Uh...It's coming from Brisco or McNutt. Or off campus housing. Maybe someone is burning the display case that very occasionally held the bucket. Or it could be some sort of recreational activity that presently competes favorably with IU football. Don't worry. Be happy. IU soccer competes in the NCAAT today (Sunday) at 1. And men's basketball later today! Far out! WayneFleekHoosier and mamasa 2 Quote

Any negotiated settlement is going to result in a guaranteed payment paid out almost immediately (see Paul Chryst). Again, why would Allen negotiate a LESSER payout only to be offset by future earnings when Indiana is contractually obligated to pay him $20.8 million if fired for cause? Quote

I don’t think anyone is forcing you to read this thread, let alone participate in it. IU is likely within 24 hours of ridding one of its coaches from one of the worst contracts in college football history and it certainly warrants discussion, particularly on how it’s going to be financed. Again, why would Allen negotiate a LESSER payout only to be offset by future earnings when Indiana is contractually obligated to pay him $20.8 million if fired for cause? It is my understanding that negotiated settlements, in lieu of large buyouts, may be commonplace among head coaches in D1 NCAA universities. You ask why? Well, a lot depends on the specific conditions of the coach's contract with the university. Such as, are there performance criteria? Undoubtedly. Do they say what conditions are causes for termination? Wins? Student grades? Cheating? Communications with administration/HR/NCAA? How did the administration document the coach's performance glitches over time with respect to these contract conditions? There may be reasons for termination besides lack of wins. It is my understanding that it is not unusual for buyouts to have reductions for future salaries as a condition in in their original hiring contracts. Not just in a negotiated settlement afterwards. Also, it may be advantageous to the coach to not dig in heels relative to demanding payment year-to-year per the original buyout. Getting fired might just make him less attractive to his next employer(s). There may be other intangible reasons for a coach to not want FIRED as a label for life. Watch what happens. Does the university just outright and immediately say HC xxx is fired? They may sit with him and/or his representative and discuss the pros and cons of a firing and the buyout and a negotiated settlement...to both sides. And why would other posters on this site be thinking that a coach would be open to a negotiated settlement in lieu of a buyout? Stuhoo may not have been born yesterday. thebigweave 1 Quote

TTT Posted November 26, 2023 Posted November 26, 2023 And the winner is Coach Tom Allen = $20,000,000 and a new beginning on his time line and totally rid of the IU football mess. Yes, he wanted success at IU but after hurt feelings and pride licking his wounds opportunities will await him and his family. There will always be good employment for him and financial stability during his career. He will eventually realize after awhile and I am sure he already does and to a much greater extent down the road is very LEO thankful for the blessing/s his coaching career including IU has been to him. Sherrone Moore from Michigan, Candle from Toledo, Eastern Mich coach Creighton, ARE, Tulane coach, Marshal HC, Sean Lewis former Kent St/Colorado OC, Kane Wommack Moore and a huge facility package announcement would be pretty exciting. Moore likely going to have better suitors I'd expect though Quote
