The ALL THINGS ABOUT ANNOUNCERS Thread

I am just hoping Hummel is not calling this game. I know people love him as a commentator and he is pretty good outside of when he calls IU games. I think he goes way overboard during our games and tries to criticize as much as possible. We haven't played well but he just continues to harp on every little mistake and it's really annoying. I've seen plenty of teams play really poorly so far this season and the commentators don't go at them nearly as hard as Hummel does us. The past two broadcasts have almost felt like the announcing crew was rooting for the upset to happen but then you go and watch a game on ACC or SEC Network and a team is struggling and you don't hear nearly the same amount of excitement in the commentator's voices at the prospect of one of their conference teams losing a buy game.

A big +1 from me; I'm with you.

I never thought I'd say this, but give me Jason Benetti with Bardo when we're playing badly. Clearly Hummel is a superior color man, but  the last thing I need when things aren't going well is Hummel being 'super-truthy' and more than a little bit whiny about it.

I had my tv-throwing-brick ready when Hummel said "I just don't understand why they would..." for the twentieth time about IU underperforming.

Better yet, give me Benetti with Brian Butch for every single minute of every game all season long. Brian Butch is the super-smart announcer that wishes he was an IU alum. He makes listening to the broadcast a joy.

Very, very much agree. I think Hummel is fine, but also pretty overrated. Only thing worse than him calling IU games is him calling Purdue games.

I don't even need bias in our favor either. I tried to ignore it and thought maybe I was just annoyed with our play because obviously he's a Purdue guy and I'm not trying to whine about the announcers but after listening again it's just ridiculous. Both games you could tell he was really enjoying each mistake and getting excited about the idea of us losing. I thought it was ridiculous when X got called for a questionable foul and he looked frustrated, which was fair it was a bad call, and Hummel immediately started pushing a narrative that X wasn't letting it go and it was affecting his play which I don't think was fair at all. Just finding any reason to be negative about a team that everyone knows is a work in progress and the majority of college basketball media has been saying all offseason won't be good until January.

When Purdue and IU are not involved he is pretty good, however I think the constant love he gets is going to his head a little bit. Could easily see him turning into a Dakich lol.

Hey, I'd take Dakich calling games 100 times out of 10 over Hummel. For all his faults, he was an incredible color commentator.

Those 2 + Clark Kellog are my favorite. Bardo isn't awful. The rest can kick rocks

Years ago, I was with my FIL playing golf at Old Oakland GC in Indy.  Clark Kellog and George McGinnis were playing as a twosome directly behind us.

The were definitely oversized for their golf cart.  That and they could really launch their drives farther into the woods than anyone in my memory.  Good thing too.  We were in range.  And so were others in different fairways.

I remember Big George, Joby Wright, Steve Downing, Jerry Memering...at the old fieldhouse...they sure played bigger than 6'7".

You're lucky I'm not calling them.  You'd get pretty sick of "this fkg sucks" after a while.  :)

Give me the guy who calls the eastern big mountain Montana state games . USPS knows who I'm talking about . Now that guy is entertaining a flat out hoot. You never know what is going to come out of his mouth .

Big Sky tournament was must see TV because of that guy.    Hopefully I can find some of his broadcasts this year before Champ week

Meh…I like Hummel. I get the feeling he respects IU, is a smart basketball guy, and was annoyed at the bad basketball. He mentioned a couple times we have a lot of talent. On a couple of those crazy 3’s Army made he did credit IU with playing good D but Army made a tough shot. But overall I was just as peeved by our bad play.

I like Settles. He seems to like IU. And you can throw me in with people who think Dakich is a talented color analyst.

I tend to just turn the sound off when guys like Bardo are on the call.

Oh…I like Gus Johnson. Even after all these years I find the enthusiasm endearing even though I know it annoys some people.

When was the last time he did though? Feel like that experience may be little different now. He escalated his crazy in the past year.

Don’t know. Liked him when he did though.

I don't really care who does the games as long as they don't try to impose their personality on the broadcast. I want good play by play and insightful color commentary. I don't want TV guys to go off on a tangent and miss things that are happening on the court. Other than that, I don't care about them.
