Class of '66 Old Fart

IUBB @ Northwestern - Wednesday, 2/15/23 @ 9:00 ET on BTN

Recommended Posts

There is good news through this loss. Two sides with different philosophies of playing and I think come tournament time we benefit in the end.

Despite the horrible reffing Coach Woodson is not sacrificing his philosophy in terms of his offensive and defensive plays he runs. His style of play  plays well come tournament time. I think what we run now will open things up and as long as we put the “effort” a lot of lanes and a lot of easy buckets will come. He get’s it in this particular area of the game.

Northwestern is interesting. Collins has decided to conform to how other programs in the big ten play (Wisconsin, Michigan State, Etc). Will make the tournament but like typical big ten teams, they play their style and find it hard to suddenly change or adjust on a dime. You can get away with it with lower seeded teams but when you play a good team that will typically bite them.

The whole big ten philosophy needs to change.

What was Khristian Lander's ranking?

Lander obviously is the best example. Bates should be more than a role player who occasionally plays well at home at this point. He’s somewhat limited ever when playing well. Makes you wander what the 5 star ranking was based on.

Outside of the obvious things (turnovers, shooting, defending) we'll need to limit our fouls in the tourney too. We've fouled at a pretty high rate all season and if we play the same way in the tourney we will make an early exit. The turnover trend will be a major factor too. The last major concern I have is with teams (like NW) that have several guards where we can't hide Kopp on defense and he's not taking and making shots on offense.

Big Ten basketball is really getting hard to watch. Feel like it gets worse every year. I remember 10 years ago how exciting B1G basketball was. IU was #1 for most of the year. Michigan was the National runner-Up. Michigan State, Ohio State, and Wisconsin all had really good teams. Now? Just awful. Purdue, IU, and Illinois I think are the only teams I can see making a deep run..My issues are:

1) If you're going to threaten IU with a technical foul for vulgar language at Assembly Hall, do it at Northwestern. Shame on Northwestern. I didn't like IU chanting "Sloppy Seconds" a few years ago at the St. John's player. There is no need for that. I know Miller is a big boy but still, be consistent.

2) The constant hacking was horrible and one sided. I didn't understand that at all. Supposedly did it to Edey on Sunday as well. Again, be consistent. Not one to ever blame officials. But I can't remember an IU game as bad as last night.

Now, as bad as the officiating was, IU had their chances. The WTF pass by Jalen, the play where Race lost the ball. Those all could have resulted in made field goals. Love Woody but the double T was bad...got 4 points out of it.

Time to move on and beat Illinois Saturday. This team is still playing for seeding in the B1GT and NCAAT. Northwestern has a lot of road games coming up. I think the #2 in the B1G is still up for grabs. Love the fight from our guys but that was a lot of bad basketball in the first half regardless of officiating.

Wow just realized on top of the Scirroto crap, Dorsey reffed both NW games for us this year.

So far this year we have had Scirroto for the @ Iowa, @NW, PU, MSU, UNC, and Xavier games.

Dorsey: @Rutgers, NW, @MD, @NW, MSU.

Courtney Green: @Iowa, Elon, UNC

I would consider those 3 as some of the worst officials in our league.

Northwestern wasn't even trying to hide the fouling. In the second half, they would just give TJD a two had shove in the back when he tried to set the ball screen. It blows me away that there are people who watched that game and didn't think the officiating had an effect on it.

I would throw Kelly Pfiefer in there also.

Did you watch the game and say dang that was really well-officiated game?

It is what it is. I haven't watched a Big 1.o game this season and thought it was well officiated.

Did you watch the first half and say dang IU had a great game plan and played with effort and focus?

The officiating wasn't good, although we did get a few makeup calls that nobody seems to mention.

If Tamar Bates was a three star recruit we wouldn’t be having these “what is wrong with him” discussions. We’d probably be saying “give CJ Gunn a try in more extended minutes.”

Yeah, still a sophomore and it’s always the road games. IMO he, personally, needs to

1. totally alter whatever road routine he has.

2. come in and just move the ball and defend on the road. Take an open rhythm shot, sure, but otherwise just let it come to you.

Excellent point. Woody def plays a style that I think will excel far better in the tourney than say a Northwestern and Rutgers style. I looked back at the best B1G team in the last decade in terms of tourney success (Michigan under Beilein). In their 2 National runner-up years they they finished tied for 4th in '13 and tied for 3rd in '18 in the B1G regular season standings. Crazy to me they never won a regular season title either of those years.

I think both the officiating was horrendous/had a major impact on the game AND IU still had their chances and could/should have won are true. The officiating was awful against UNC. IU didn't let it matter. Unfortunatly you have to capitalize on your chances. I 100000% agree the conference needs to change.

Team needs to flush it. We can discuss it all we want but I think I learned something good about this team in the second half. Let’s get X back and keep winning.

If IU can take care of business at home and maybe steal a road game it should still finish second.

Looking forward to the BTT for once, honestly. Let’s nip NW in the semifinal and then either play PU for the sweep or to break the season series tie on Sunday.
