Good question and as soon as I typed that I figured someone would ask. I think a good AD should always have a top 5 list with every sport and make sure it is an ever-changing list. First off I'm not on the Chris Beard train. I just don't think you should ever lay your hands on a woman. I can't get over that part just yet. I believe in second chances but not so soon.

Bruce Pearl is on my list

Micah Schrewsberry is on my list

Dusty May

I'm still willing to throw out huge money at Brad Stevens

I'm not sure what the other one is right now. It's not Scott Drew, or Porter Mosier

But remember I'm just a nobody posting on a message board.

Shrew and Dusty are def ones I’m keeping my eye on. Shrew had a nice OT win last night.

I would add the guy from Indiana State seems to be pretty good. This is at least the second program he is building. I would keep an eye on him. We know they don't have much in NIL, resources, or talent.

Jason Schertz, came from DII where he won 83% of his games.

Vented over Mike Woodson as many of us did last night...and he def isn't the coach I want here....however, I think with the transfer portal and the NIL stuff....It would seem that leadership is down across the board.Talent is more spread out among the schools and the style of basketball (3pt shooting fest), it doesn't matter as much who you have in terms of NBA talent- anyone (almost) can beat anyone at any time, which is great in some respects but it also takes away from the drama of the past- david and goliath. Everyone is kind of the same. For instance- Rutgers could come to Btown and lose by 20 and then do we really know who is better? They both are kind of terrible. Oh well. No one in the B1G for instance is actually that much better than anyone else. Edey is the only reason we think Purdue is somewhat a bit ahead of everyone else. But when you take him away, they are just a Wisconsin team.

You can't really have many effective true leaders among the big schools because the young men are now the prize and the school is paying for the privilege of their patronage. It makes leadership inept. Coaches can't demand anything from anyone. It's all about the money and the agents and the shoe companies. Mike Woodson isn't in control of this team anymore than Scott Dolson is anymore than Tim Garl. They are all just getting paid to play a part in the big money game that enriches the hell out of them, the players and leaves the fans watching nothing that represents their values, their community their town or their school.

The next coach who comes here is going to hopefully be better at building rosters, better at substitution patters, and some other things...but ultimately they are all place holders, PR people who answer meaningless Qs at the ends of games. I think college athletics as we used to know them, are broken for good.

Maybe so.  But the money thing has to stop at the gym door.  Once on the floor is has to be about the team, period.  So I don't care how much NIL you have, if you suck tonight, you're butt is on the bench.

I agree if you fire him now you lose a lot of the old guard. Isiah, Randy, May, those guys. Yes, this off-season is going to be really interesting.

If the wheels fall off the rest of the season it might be easier to nudge him out

If they actually cared about the program, they'd understand moving on.

Wow.  Why?  These guys aren't blind and they know basketball.  Surely they can clearly see Woody isn't the guy.  They're willing to put friendship over the best interest of the program?

Sounds like you don't have many very close friends

Woody isn't some guy that's going on unemployment if he gets canned.  He probably has an 8 figure net worth.  Not even remotely comparable to seeing your buddy with a family to feed lose a job.

So now we are worried about losing guys who played here 45 years ago? I would think guys that went 64-1 in two seasons would want to win period vs keeping an old timer from 40 years ago just because he is their buddy.

I wasn't on the IU guy wagon because none of them were particularly good coaches, that includes Woodson.

That's another downside, firing him could get ugly.

They thought they had Brad Stevens and when he said no thanks, they went scramble mode and hired Woodson. IMO

100% I said it the day they hired him. Good luck ever firing him or Buckner and crew will throw tantrum.

If Woodson was younger I would absolutely not be considering letting him go as an option coming off two straight tournaments and having some growing pains this year but not being catastrophically bad. My biggest thing here is that with his age, giving him a bunch of time to build doesn't make a ton of sense. Hiring an old coach seems like a win now mover and he has voiced that, so when things start going backwards that is when it feels like it might be time to evaluate things. I just don't want to jump back into the endless cycle of hiring and firing.

This is a good point, honestly. Until the NCAA / these super conferences have a system in place where players are compensated like regular employees doing a good job and not as mercenary soldiers, we're going to have a lack of continuity that stunts the development of players and evolution of programs. Tough to build something when your roster turns over every year and you can't actually establish a system that people have bought into and been part of for 2, 3, 4 years.

We've got our own issues specific to IU but there are bigger systemic challenges relevant to everyone but especially problematic for IU given where the program currently is.

Agreed. Plus a lot of ex-players donate a lot of NIL money. Plus Cuban is very close with a couple of them.

I was at IU when all three of those guys played.  Do I think it’s “nice/cool” to bridge the generations and embrace the traditions? Yes.

Do I think it means much of anything to 18-22 year olds? No

Do I think their performance on the court is impacted in anyway because Isiah, Randy, May etc are happy/involved/invested?  No
