Sure.  I'd probably take everybody on that list before Crean or Archie, which was the point I originally responded to.

Half of those guys had a chance at a P5 and flamed out no different than  Crean (and Archie to a lesser extent).

Or?

The style of play has evolved and is more effective than what it replaced. Because coaches are smart, desperately want to win, and utilize the best systems available.

I'd actually say coaching overall has went down since 20 years ago... But that's just me. Been a lot of greats retire.

lol.  I think you like to argue.  Spend some time reading what other coaches say about Dusty May.  Read what Tommy Lloyd said after the game.  I’ll let the experts in the field tell me about Dusty May.  And I’ll let message boarders compare him to the likes of Frank Martin, etc.

Woody: “F you. After all I’ve put into this journey that’s how you’re treating me?

F YOU!”

That’s how almost every coach’s tenure ends, unless they won multiple titles and their handpicked successor is in place.

It’s not like Archie gave any of the $10mil back out of shame. In his mind he was just ready to turn it all around.

You’re the one that said you wanted those guys as coach at IU. I just take that into account when people tell me they want May, too.

Should probably wait until Woody has a bad season before projecting the end of his tenure.

Because he hasn’t had one yet, and this one is only 1/3 over.

I think May might be a good hire down the road but who knows?

Yes, Dusty is getting great reviews from “experts” but Archie was one of the hottest young coaches in the game when we hired him and he turned out to be arguably the worst hire IU athletics has ever made.

There are a lot of intriguing things about May but “promising” mid-major coaches moving to P5 can bomb (Archie, Enfield, Groce, Monson etc) but on the other hand they can turn out to be home runs (Calhoun, Jay Wright etc). It would be great if there was a “sure thing” solution but that’s just not the case.

Everyone knows it ain't lasting very long. Not at his age. Unless things are rolling and he's got Indiana back into being a Top 10-20 program, killing recruiting, winning a couple B1G titles, making runs in the NCAAs... No reason to see him past his original deal. Not sure what his buyouts look like, but Indiana should absolutely have the next plan in place and no way Woody doesn't know that or understand that.

Agreed we can't listen to the same people who said Archie would be a good hire in regards to Dusty May.  Listen to the smart people who knew Archie would be garbage.  Those people say May would be fantastic at IU.

Make it happen.

Do you have a list of these prophets? I need some lottery numbers and clearly they don’t miss.

Some of you really crack me up with your personal wish list of a coach to replace Woody.  Reminds me of getting the Sears Christmas catalog as a kid and dog-earing the pages of the new toys I wanted Santa to bring me.

Holy smokes!  They had catalogs way back then!   ;)

Honest question:

do we know what Woody was hired to do? Obviously it is to win and restore us to prominence but is the plan for him to be here a long time to do that and keep it there or to get us close and hand it off to someone else while it is in a good place unlike several before him?

maybe it is incorrect but my belief was that he was going to hand it off before we ever saw a bad season or stretch of seasons which means walking away while the cupboard is full. It’s hard to make the cupboard full and equally as hard to walk away while it is but coach K did it and so have others. That’s what you do when you love the university and can put it ahead of yourself.

anyway, just curious if there was a plan/expectation for Woodson to be here longterm or not.

No, we don't. Even if he was hired as a short term coach, they wouldn't say that publicly. It would hurt his ability to recruit.

Your belief that he was just hired as a short term coach that was just here long enough to build up a good roster then hand it over to someone else to win with is probably just wishful thinking.

He was hired here to win games and was never thought of it as a 3 or 4 year thing. We have seen plenty of coaches coach into their mid 70's so I don't think Woodson was brought here to just stabilize the program

He was a complete scramble hire.  Dolson thought he had Stevens in the bag otherwise Archie isn't fired for another year.  Went after Holtmann, Matta, etc first.

What ever you want to think but that is just a ridiculous statement . There was no concrete evidence that we were close the getting Stevens. The only place you saw it was on message board rumors by so called insiders
