Class of '66 Old Fart

(2024) - PG Boogie Fland to Kentucky

Recommended Posts

I wish I saw Artie's warning before I clicked the link...
Everything he said was true.
Also, there are some posters on here who are doing the exact same thing they were making fun of other fan bases when they lose out to IU on a recruit. See the MM and LM threads

This is not a "sour grapes, we didn't want him anyways" post. I absolutely wanted Fland for both his talent, position and the perception of getting two 5*'s in one week against KU and UK.

We need to be stacking high-end talent in these classes, and especially in the backcourt.

I wanted us to land Fland. Just making it crystal clear.

With all of that said, I am perfectly comfortable with a sophomore Gabe Cupps as our point guard next season. I was hoping to have Fland and Cupps together, but I'm perfectly comfortable with Cupps running the show next year.

I'd even argue a sophomore Cupps has more potential to impact winning at the college level next year as a point guard than a freshmen Fland.

Now, we need to add more talent in the backcourt. More playmakers, more creators, etc., but I'm good with Cupps

I wanted Fland more than Queen, it's a guard oriented game today and 2 5* could send a message to other recruits; plus that's the kind of talent we need to be stacking.

That doesn't mean I think Cupps won't be good, I like him and think he could have big role in the future.

I still don't like only getting one in the fall.  If Mgbako and Ware actually leave after one year we could have several openings that need filled late.  I'd gladly add Perry or Harper but may be too late to try and get back in there.

Staff had the option of making some of the other kids higher priorities but chose to go for the top end talent.  Seems like their gamble didn’t pay off.  That’s a whole  other argument on what the staff should have or could have done.    Can’t worry about that now they just have to deal with the hand dealt to them and continue to work.    They definitely are going to be able to offer someone a lot of PT at the lead guard position

Last sentence is the key. Woodson is honest in recruiting, we hear it from all the guys who commit to him/IU, that they have the chance but have to work for it —

and the top recruits are looking for immediate and significant playing time, this year we have X and Gallo in the backcourt, even if someone might displace Gallo this year ( no one is displacing X), Gallo’s gonna play a ton, as he should.

Don’t read it unless you’re one of those guys who enjoys watching your X girlfriend/wife with another guy or ripping off the band aid slowly…. Lol
Yep brutal

I don't post much but honestly this could be a huge positive.  Woody is old and will not be here long no matter what.  Better to rip the bandaid off quickly.  What if Cody had gone elsewhere and Crean was canned after year 3?  We'd likely be a lot better off today.

So you think that missing on this one player will be the downfall of Woodson? I find that doubtful.

It would also be better for Woodson to be successful during his time at IU. That way he can hand off a team with talent and, hopefully, recent success in recruiting to his replacement whenever he does move on.

So I'm not really seeing the "huge positive" that you are. I think IU will be fine without this guy but I don't think missing on him after prioritizing him instead of other guards is a positive.

Agreed. There's no positive here. It always sucks to lose a top recruit, especially to the slime cats... it's not the end of the world, but there is nothing positive about it.
