And that will likely be Bates or Geronimo, but I’d bet the most likely would be...

Trey Galloway

Yes, when he was healthy last year that lineup (w/Phin in the JHS spot) closed leads. Extra ball-handler, good decision-maker, maybe your best wing defender (JHS and/or Geronimo have a chance to pass him on the last point).

I’m really hoping to see Tamar Bates in the starting lineup over Miler Kopp. Bates showed flashes of a higher ceiling than Kopp when he got more than spot minutes. Kopp just doesn’t move the needle for me at all. I see a lot of what we saw last season from him.

I made the lineup fit case earlier but I would also say bringing Bates off the bench fits when you start the two guys you plan to play 100% of the PG minutes. I’d expect one of the PGs to see early rest so their minutes can be more easily staggered.

Having Bates as a 6th man who spells, say, JHS say the 16 minute mark allows JHS to give X a breather at 12, rather than both of them sitting at the same time.

You could manage that if you start Bates, though not in such a straightforward fashion, unless at 16 you rest both Bates AND a PG.

Coach Woodson likes Miller Kopp in the starting lineup. That's the end of the discussion, at least for now. As mentioned, having Bates come off the bench to spell Xavier Johnson or Jalen Hill-Schifino makes good sense and such a role will provide Bates with near starter time. Also as mentioned above, Trey Galloway--when he gets into true playing shape--will likely end up playing quite a bit of time at the 3 (hopefully with improved perimeter shooting). There could be changes if the team underperforms with the current projected starting lineup, ie TJD, Race Thompson, Miller Kopp, X Johnson, and JH-S. We'll see.

Rothstein article on top glue guys in cbb with  the obligatory Race Thompson mention. 1 minor quibble and 1 major one: 1) Not sure I’d call Caleb McConnell a glue guy. 2) Andre Jackson is absolutely not a glue guy. That dude’s a star.

Maybe by the Big Ten season but not for the first half. Woody loves him some veteran guys and Kopp has been around.

True, and there wasn't much wing depth last season. What we have in actual wing depth (and by that I'm including starting-level talent) this season remains to be seen -- but, Bates seems to me like the most likely candidate to play more heavy minutes on the wing. Man, though, I hope to see lineups with JG and Bates and/or JG and Gallo and/or JG and Ren (the latter is, to me, straight up scary on potential).

Hey MK. If you read all the posts hoping you don’t start, or hoping you play limited minutes, I’ll come at it from a different angle. It seems obvious that Woody is going to start you so I hope your defense continues to get better, you blend in well with JHS and that you hit shots at a rate that will make it hard to take you off the court. Drill the kick-outs,  stretch the D and 40%+ from the three baybee!!!

By the end of the year Kopp was one of IU’s better defenders.  Kopp is going to get a ton of minutes in my opinion.   Bates time on the floor will depend on how much he has improved defensively.  If his minutes are limited it will be because of the defensive side of the ball

You may be right re ton of minutes, he was playing basically 21-22 min a game to close out the season with some 30-plus minute game (mostly bc of player injuries iirc correctly). But he was shooting like 1-3 shots a game and our perimeter game was almost non-existent. Agree guys like Bates have to show improved D (tend to think Woodson's continuing high praise wouldn't be there if it wasn't but we'll see). Woodson's comments do show he's a D-first guy, but we need a perimeter game to run deep. Hopefully Kopp shoots more with the anticipated ball movement from JHS/X.

I’m with you here. I’m less concerned with the defense out of Kopp’s position than I am the scoring. Kopp was an absolute liability on both ends during the tournaments. At this stage in his career, he’s a known commodity. Bates, IMHO needs Kopp’s minutes for us to really reach our potential.

Yeah I don’t mean to dis Kopp, his positional D is solid, and he can shoot, but Woodson didn’t bring him to IU for his defense, he was brought here to add to / build our nonexistent perimeter game from what CAM left us with, and he barely shoots, his role was to add shooting, and where was it? He scored at the bottom of the team, we shot, and he shot, at the bottom of the B1G.

So if Woodson continues to play him in the area of 20 minutes, I hope it’s bc he’s doing what he was brought here to do, shooting and forcing defenses to extend, he has the shooting ability to do that, maybe now with JHS and X we’ll see it. But regardless we’ll be a more dangerous team come March if Bates is playing with that Soph jump and showing the level of talent we know he has, he’s an attacking 3 level scorer, we need that to run deep (and JG’s growth as well)
