Class of '66 Old Fart

(2025) - PG Jalen Haralson to Notre Dame

Where does this end? Will there be caps eventually? Hypothetically, what if the Cooks/Cubans etc wanted to donate $100mm each year to buy anyone we wanted? There are guys like that that could if they wanted to and it’s bound to happen if there aren’t constraints in place

That will only happen if the NCAA is given an antitrust exemption or, more likely, the players unionize and make a CBA with them.

The thing is, if salary caps are put in place, boosters will just go back to paying under the table the way they used to.

I know it might not be a popular take, but let the mega rich give the money to kids this way. Better to be out in the open.

Makes sense. It’s just a matter of time before someone like Phil knight says “I want to see a national championship at my favorite school and will do whatever it takes” and then proceeds to pay outrageous numbers to ensure that. I’m an IU homer but if I’m making a mil at IU and Oregon says I have $10 mil for you I’m taking it and so would every good player across the country

Revenue sharing will probably lead to more structure.

Yeah might happen. Didn't some billionaire try it with Miami a few years ago? Might not have worked as planned but I agree someone will do it.

On the other hand, I can't see it happening too often, because

1) let's say $10M is the number. How many elite players will you get? Maybe 8? 80M a year is a huge investment with an obviously lower return. Billionaires don't get rich from investing in things that lose money, even a passion project such as college basketball when a (nonguaranteed) title would bring money, notoriety, and access to the program.

2) if some players are making $10M and others are not even making close to that, I imagine team dynamics might be odd.

Maybe but the elite, money programs will re-gain competitive advantages anyway they can. If Indiana doesn’t prepare for it we will be left behind again.

Reminds me of when Miami (The U) got scholarships reduced for football and then they just went and put Santana Moss and others on a track scholarship and they “walked on” the football team. Teams will always find a way.

No correlation. ND got a commit today, too.

Haralson commented last week about the 3 finalist. "Shrews is an offensive genius. We've broken down so much film together and he's already helped my game." The longer we got away from the visit he had with us the lesser the chance we had. I thought he would've been in the bag with us within the week. I think Shrews beat us.

I've been told for two years Sisley wouldn't play with Haralson again. Now when Sisley commits Monday, Haralson retweets it and schedules his ceremony for Wednesday I can't imagine it's to rush and join Sisley. Koehler the ND commit today played AAU ball with Haralson. I don't think it mattered though.

Good info. Darn it, if that’s the case.

That seems logical, and yet…

who knows!

Why on Earth would Woodson spend 4 years recruiting Haralson if he was never going to play with Sisley and vice versa? Woodson has spent more personal time with Haralson than any other recruit to date. No chance Woodson lets Sisley commit if that was actually the case. To insinuate Sisley and Haralson was a “whoever commits first” type of recruitment is laughable.

Because the ‘Haralson and Sisley will never play together again’ is just fan fiction hogwash.  If Haralson ends up at ND, it has nothing to do with Sisley.

personally, in terms of Shrewsberry — I don’t think anyone has ever gotten more ill-earned rep out of one season than him.  With NIL, you have the opportunity to rebuild a team in your image immediately quick.  Notre Dame, in a down ACC last year was bad — and worse was they couldn’t score and couldn’t shoot.

Agreed. Just needed to call out said hogwash.

Simple question….if this ‘scenario’ is true, why in the hell would Haralson retweet sisley’s signing if he ‘hates playing with him so much’?
