Class of '66 Old Fart

(2024) PF - Derik Queen to Maryland

Recommended Posts

I’ve watched about 5 of their games this year. His on court demeanor is interesting.  He doesn’t get too high especially.  But he doesn’t get too low either.  Has a perturbed disposition most of the time. He plays hard in my opinion relative to his athleticism.  He definitely wants to win. He always seems to have effective and efficient games below the rim.  I think the College size and strength will trouble him a bit early on.  I hope we do get him especially if he realizes he might be on the TJD type trajectory.  I don’t think his athleticism will allow him to be a 1 and done.

Sounds like a better passing Malik Reneau.

I think Reneau is a fairly good passer but sometimes a slow decision maker.  Queen will sometimes force from the post too.

Montverde to their credit have good ball movement and good player movement. P

I honestly see a fair amount of similarities in their games. Queen seems to rebound a bit better. Great hands. Good feel.

Jamie Shaw  -

At the high school level, Derik Queen is a matchup nightmare. Especially for a school like Prolific Prep that simply does not have much size coming off the bench. Queen has excellent footwork, he is able to carve out space on the block and find dangerous angles to put himself in favorable positions. Queen has soft hands with good touch on the block. The 6-foot-9 post player has a go-to move over both shoulders and a plethora of counters off those moves. In front of the sold-out crowd and the bright lights on Springfield, Massachusetts Queen finished with 18 points, on 7-11 shooting, and six rebounds.

I really want Queen. This is not a knock against Ware but I think Queen is an upgrade. At least as far as impacting winning goes.

His recruitment gives me the same vibes that Romeo’s did. Maryland is IU and IU is Vanderbilt. I think the pull to play with Liam is strong but the hometown (and Under Armour) pull is going to prevail here. Hope I’m wrong. I really would love to have an all Montverde frontcourt.

What about defense? Below/at/above average? I get he's not a rim-protector, but good fundamentals? Rebounding?

ETA- just saw Demo's post above, so sounds like he is a willing and capable defender. Good feet on a big is enticing.

247 assessment:

Queen is a skilled big man who owns excellent touch around the rim and out to the three-point line. His best asset is his fantastic hands. It all shows in the way shoots it, grabs rebounds, and passes the basketball. Queen has a terrific feel for the game and is a good passer. He also is a capable ball-handler who can take the ball off the defensive glass and lead the break for a couple of dribbles. His body is still developing as he is strong but his frame has yet to sculpt and mature. However, it should as his high school career progresses. Due to his body type at this stage, he is not the most athletic or bouncy. He is more of a below the rim finisher in traffic and he protects the rim more with his size and girth. However, with his size, skill, and developing frame, Queen has the potential to develop into an elite inside and out threat in the frontcourt who is reliable in isolated situations in the half-court. He also will bring value in the high post and will excel in various offensive actions at a high level.

Cassidy thoughts on Queen’s recruitment. No reason to think he’s not right.
So when he says his decision hinges on who is returning I get a bad feeling. He probably wants malik and ware gone so he can get more minutes and be the guy? Good chance 1 or both are gone imo. The fact our program is burning to the ground also doesn't give off good vibes. I think we are a long shot at this point.

I agree and disagree...I think Ware would be the one he wants gone.  He and Malik could exist together. They both have similar skill sets, great on the block, great passers, and with Malik now hitting some 3's (Queen can too)....they can play together with no issue.  I would love to see him and Malik together!

Definitely need to keep Ware on the first round draft lists and the higher the better.  Side comment that for all the talk of wanting Woody gone.  If he goes IMO we never land DQ and Liam likely asks for his release.

I think it’s probably all about Ware and Julian Reese. Either of those guys leaving creates an obvious hole. Can’t imagine Ware stays. Reese probably shouldn’t go, but his dislike of Willard is pretty obvious when they interact. Maybe Houston, though they don’t play through the post. No way it’s KU.

I would love to see this next year =>  Queen, Reneau, McNeely, MM, and Cupps.

Yeah, I didn't put Ware in that lineup and I'm ok with that.  IMHO, as the season goes, I see bigger holes in his game.

I'll leave that on that counter and walk away.

Not opposed but we need a better PG and 2 guard.

Definitely point guard.  Cupps can come off the bench.  It would be interesting to watch that specific lineup with a better point guard.  Between McNeely and MM, which one plays the shooting guard?

i could certainly see this.  I've heard the (McNeely) family talking about wanting to be a top 10 team/national contender multiple times.  I've been a bit worried throughout.  Fingers crossed.
