rayl456 Posted March 20, 2021 Posted March 20, 2021 Pitino/Iona giving Oats/Alabama a good fight. Iona down 2 at half. Quote
Teague Posted March 21, 2021 Posted March 21, 2021 (edited) Just stopping back in to remind you guys again, we aren't letting Oats go. I'll address some of your points. 1. Yes, he signed a new contract, with a huge (12-14 million) buyout, because in his words, "he doesn't care about the buyout, because he's not leaving." 2. "IU will give him a big raise." Well, so will we if we need to. He might get bumped up again, either way, if he wins a few more games this year. 3. "Bama doesn't care about basketball." Wrong. We're not UK, but we're second only to them in all time SEC wins. We're always near the top of the SEC in attendance, despite 15 years of mediocre teams and coaching. We have a huge basketball following (no, not as big as IU, but a lot bigger than you probably think) that has been dying for something to cheer about. Our facilities are as good as anyone's, with the exception of the arena. And, there are plans in work to completely gut the current arena and more or less turn it into a new one. 4. "The SEC is down." UK is down. But, the SEC, overall is pretty decent this year, if you delve into all the numbers. Some might say the B10 wasn't nearly as up as the experts thought. 6. Oats has said he isn't going anywhere soon. I don't think it's just coach speak. He's mentioned not dragging his daughters all over the country. And he believes Bama is a sleeping giant where nothing is holding him back from winning at the highest level. And he's right. 7. Recruiting. Bama was Recruiting well even before he arrived. We had a couple of 5 stars on the roster already. Nothing shocking about him signing more, especially with some of them being in-state Bama fans. 8. We're not letting him go easily. Honestly, I think if/when he leaves, it will be for the NBA. He seems to talk about the NBA a lot. But, he's going to have to win a lot more games to get their attention. Look at that Loyola guy, or Beard. Have a nice day. Edited March 21, 2021 by Teague cchuntsman 1 Quote

On the other hand there have been LOTS of unexpected, even illogical coaching moves. Didn't Dirty Nicky swear on his mother's life he wouldn't take the Bama job, only to do exactly that the next day? Bama is in a good place in a lot of ways but Bball will always be the ugly step-sister to Football and a basketball guy may not like that. No, "dirty nicky" (another hilarious one is "Lil' Nick") said he wasn't going to Bama, and meant it. He had turned the job down. Then our AD went back, and basically wouldn't take no for an answer, and Saban changed his mind. I suppose you could try that with Oats, but it's a bit different since Saban was unhappy in the NFL and missed college. Basketball may never be as popular as football at Bama, but it's always been more popular than it is at most schools. You probably don't know that a few years ago our basketball coach was making more than the football coach. The fantasy that Oats would get mad because the football team is successful is just that- a fantasy. Alabama wins SEC and national titles in many sports. One doesn't detract from another. In fact, it's looking like your other guy might be heading to football school, Texas. Anyway, I get it. But, no. Quote
