Yes, chatter is his term.

Yeah I know. Beilein, Woodson, and Beard in that order. With Musselman and Fife getting some talk as well. So basically it doesn’t sound like he knows much. He doesn’t think there is anything to Matta.

How many games would an NBA coach be expected to win if his top five in minutes played (in order) were Melo (in his prime), Earl Barron, Raymond Felton, J.R. Smith, and Tyson Chandler?

Looks like a 39 year old Jason Kidd was fifth in minutes on that team; Barron just played a lot in a single game. But your point stands! That team was absolutely maximized by its coach

Just talked to an AAU guy I know. The top 3 names he has heard are Beard, Mussleman, and Fife.

Did he say who he’s hearing them from? Someone mentioned IU letting names out to gauge reactions and I’m curious if there’s any evidence of that happening.

Kinda gets more amazing the deeper you go down the list. Starting at sixth in minutes and descending: Steve Novak, Pablo Prigioni, Iman Shumpert, Chris Copeland, and Ronnie Brewer

This caused me to go to a UNC board and there are some precisely comments in a fire Roy thread. I especially liked this one "Roy fumbled about 2-3 Natty's in the last 10 years... Had the talent but fumbled it.."

Maybe we can hire Roy... sorry hard pass, too old.

Boosters. Most likely just noise. Just saw people mention AAU people possibly having head stuff so I reached out to him.

Hello all. Only been hanging around the site for a couple days (and I apologize if this has specifically been discussed) but I am curious as to what "we" are looking for in a coach ......

A) A "culture" guy ----- (ex: Stevens)

B) A "proven winner" ------- (ex: Bennett)

C) A "proven winner in the BIG" ------- (ex: Beilein, Matta)

D) A "somewhat proven" winner with Bobby ties ------- (ex: Beard)

E) An "advanced metrics" guy ------- (ex: Oats)

F) An "X's and O's" guy ------- (ex: Moser)

G) An "NBA-style" coach who would appeal to players aspiring to the pros ------- (ex: Woodson)

H) An "IU guy" with experience and brand name -------- (Alford)

I) An "IU guy" who isn't damaged goods (ex: Lewis or Fife)

J) Someone who is NOT coming from a mid-major

Not to say there isn't crossover in this list. Just curious. I find myself moving the target hour to hour these last few days. But I think if I could have anyone, my vote would actually be Moser. I listened to him on the radio this morning. Guy has serious personality. The Chicago people love him and Loyola absolutely crushed some dreams yesterday. He is a BIG TIME X's and O's guy. And to me THAT is Indiana basketball. I personally don't care where he'd be coming from.

Well since you asked, I would say "B" with the addition of "in a Power 5 conference."

IU needs to repair the program, The last 5yrs have been tough and I think you hire the best, most proven commodity you can.

Stevens was an excellent start and shows Dolson is serious. I am not sure who is next on the list, but Moser would be down my list quite a ways. Winning in the (stops to look up Loyola's conference) MVC is not nothing, but it's not the B1G. Also it took him like 15yrs to get there. Again, that is great, but IU doesn't need a plodder or a grinder at this point. They need a winner that can get things going in 2-3 yrs, max. Same with Fife, Woodson, the UNCG guy and many others. There is likely a couple of excellent coaches in that group that will be big winners for someone, but IU can't take that risk, IMO. Go with the most certain commodity you can.  I have preferences on age and style and personality like everyone else. None of that matters at all if he doesn't win. So get someone that has already shown they can win at this level. That is the best chance to get IU back to being a solid program.

By the way...forget to answer the question.

That Knicks roster was 54-28. First in their division.

I’m sure they’re saying this but it’s a crazy take. You don’t get a title for being a top ten or top five team. How many times has UNC even had the most talent in the ACC in that time? Once or less IMHO.

Here is what I believe should be the main criteria for this hire, because if we screw this up then you risk losing the fanbase altogether!!

1.  Proven Power 5 success with deep Tourney runs (a must)

2.  Preferably Under the age of 60

3.  Charismatic leader that won't shrink under the pressure at IU

4.  Someone who can inspire the masses

There are three basic ways to consistently win big in college basketball.

(1) Great coach who cheats - UK, Duke, UNC, Kansas, Syracuse, Louisville, MSU, etc.

(2) Average/Above average coach who cheats - LSU, Arizona

(3) Great coach who doesn’t cheat - Virginia, Villanova.

When you think of potential hires for IU, whoever they are, ask yourself which category they (1) fit in now and (2) would fit in at IU. Average/above average gets you Archie Miller or Tom Crean results at IU.

You could add #5:

5.  Someone who isn't going to bolt to the NBA or another opening

I think a quality we all want with the new coach is someone who can win in March. I don't care about November. IU was as high as #3 in the 2016-2017 season and they flamed out. I saw someone post NCAA Tournament records of some of the candidates on Twitter. I'll include Stevens just to show how he is in comparison. I also looked up Sampson, Crean, and Miller's NCAA records before they came to IU.

Chris Beard 10-4 71%

John Beilein 26-13 67%

Brad Stevens 12-5 71%

Archie Miller 5-4 56%

Tom Crean 5-5 50%

Kelvin Sampson 11-12 48%

The saying is you don't want to hire a coach based off one run. I feel the last two hires were based off one run. I took away each coaches best tournament run and here are the winning percentages:

Beard 63%

Beilein 60%

Stevens 64%

Miller 40%

Crean 20%

Sampson 39%

I know the tournament is a crap shoot but I'd love Beard or Beilein (age concerns me). It's obvious both are major upgrades over what this program has had. They are also on par with Stevens as far as the tournament goes. Yes, he was my number one choice but Beard and Beilein are good options. I didn't get to appreciate IU basketball in the 70s, 80s, and 90s like most of you. My first team I can remember making a run is the 2002 team. 2012, 2013, and 2016 teams made the Sweet 16. I just want this team to get back to making deep runs. Let's not over look things. It's all about March and how far you go.

That’s a tough list.

Stevens doesn’t even meet this criteria. Doesn’t have #1.

Matta, Beilein, Fife, Alford, Lewis, Bennett, Beard, Musselman, Oats do not meet #4
