If we hired Pitino instead of Woody 4 years ago, he would've hung the 6 banner already.
Maybe we should hire Ben johnson. Same amount of wins as Woodson at half the salary and probably 1/3 the nil. Lol.

Does anyone know if players enjoy playing for Cronin? Does he have some personality behind the scenes? He just seems very negative and also openly calls out his players which worked 15-20 years ago but kids these days are very soft and want nurturing

Are kids soft or just the players we've brought in here and then harbored that mindset with coaches that don't hold players accountable?

Worked years ago but not today?  Ummm,  whatever Mick’s personality is it appears to not affect his ability to win every where he has been.  He is a proven winner.

instead of viewing this as a do or die hire, you might have to go out on a little bit of a limb and, what do we really have to to lose at this point in trying out somebody like Kevin Young at BYU or the other obvious ones like McCollum, etc.?

1. Steven’s/May

2. A young up and coming coach.

No thanks on the Older established coaches this cycle.  We need high energy and excitement/ longevity infused into this dying, (formerly) mismanaged program IMO

We need winning. Give me an established coach with a proven track record vs someone without a resume. Young and energy means nothing if they can’t win. With NIL get the best coach and we will be fine. Now that doesn’t mean that excludes a younger coach. But age shouldn’t be a requirement. Coach Cignetti is in his 60’s and has plenty of energy and excitement. And I think Dolson will go for experience, all things being equal.

I was told we'd be seeing a Brad Stevens-to-Indiana announcement yesterday, what happened?

On a serious note, I'm willing to hold out hope he may come and there's a lot going on behind the scenes we aren't privy to. I see and hear rumblings in various places that the Stevens saga isn't over. Only time will tell I guess. Odds are we've still got 6+ weeks to go before we'll know much of anything for certain.

However, I'm super stoked about Dusty May and I don't think that anyone should feel like it's a significant step down from Brad Stevens. If anything, we're more likely to be winning games with more immediacy given that Dusty is a *current* college coach and Stevens would be making a stark adjustment (yes he's done the job before, but that was 10+ years ago).

Also, I gotta say it's pretty funny seeing how everyone went from "if it's Cronin I'm out" to "I'm warming up to Cronin" in a span of about 72 hours. I guess throwing names around like Buzz Williams, Brad Brownell, and Mark Turgeon is having the intended effect haha

Cronin Cronin Cronin Cronin Cronin Cronin Cronin Cronin Cronin Cronin Cronin Cronin Cronin Cronin Cronin Cronin Cronin Cronin Cronin Cronin Cronin Cronin Cronin Cronin Cronin Cronin Cronin Cronin Cronin Cronin Cronin Cronin

I keep telling you guys we are being conditioned for Cronin…..before this is over we will all be shaving our heads and chanting his name!

I get what you’re saying, but like you said all things being equal I think we need to get somebody in here that has plenty of energy and excitement to build a program in the right way and not just rely on NIL.  I just think for the long haul and to get somebody that’s gonna be here for a considerable amount of time there are options of younger coaches out there that I think would fit the bill and be better than getting a coach for 5 to 7 years and then have to re-hire again.

Im still set on Beard/May as my two preferred with Pitino sprinkled in as another.  The Beard thing is way over blown.  His fiance was the aggressor from the beginning,  if you've ever been with a crazy women you know what he was likely dealing with.  Pitino id have no problem with it, he would kill it again at another major program with IUs resources.  May I'm perfectly fine with, squeaky clean public image so the IU brass of these days obviously values that more than anything, success at UM first year, but will he jump into the fishbowl of Bloomington.  Will he risk all the feel goods he has here to have a chance at being Iconic? I think he would essentially ruin it if he does turn the job down because he will get offered.

I'm so far behind on this thread I have to read it backwards.  Going back over 100 pages I have learned....absolutely nothing.  Wife keeps asking me what I'm looking at on my phone, I think she suspects something depraved...perhaps it is.

if this is depravity, we are having to wait waaay too long for the "happy ending"...

JFC. There are multiple incidents with Beard. MULTIPLE! He beats a woman multiple times, his fiancée, and is a constant drinker around campus. Not happening. Nope. No matter how some of you keep trying to wish it into existence. Not. Happening. I’m not joking.

I don’t really know that much about him. I was just wondering if there are any pics that ever surfaced.
some of the media guys seem to poo poo it to some degree,  but if he actually did choke and bite her, I would not before the hire.

Up late Watching UCLA play. I have no idea why, but the more I think about it, the more Mick Cronin I think is a perfect fit at Indiana. Even a month ago, if someone said that, I would have laughed. That being said, if you really watch his teams play and look at his resume..

He's won everywhere he's been. He's been at 3 programs that care deeply about college basketball (Yes, for a mid-major Murray State is one of the best fan bases. They packed the Ford Center every year for the OVC). Maybe not at the IU level, but I would have to think he gets it as far as basketball being the priority on campus. When he was at Cincinnati in the start, the Big East was the top league in all of college hoops. He had some solid teams there.

Since 2011, his teams have only missed the NCAA tournament once (I think UCLA makes it in 2020) 12 straight tournaments is incredible. Meanwhile, the last time IU made 3 straight NCAAs was 06-08...

Yes, he's made the Sweet 16 "only" 4 times. Bruce Pearl, who we all (including myself) wanted, has made it to the Sweet 16 5 times. You know who else has made the Sweet 16 5 times? Scott Drew. Not sure why Mick gets punished for that. It's really hard to win in a 68 team tournament anymore.

I really like how he called his team out a month ago and they responded. They have a legit shot at making the Sweet 16 this year. Look, I get it. Nobody here wants to just make the Sweet 16. It's why Tom Crean is no longer here. But, I'll tell you what I am tired of. I'm tired of being a bubble team. I'm tired of having zero identity as far as a program goes. Since 2016-2017, that's been IU basketball. I've always  thought of Mick Cronin teams as tough, and they go after it on defense. I think since he's been at UCLA the offense has been much better.

A week and a half ago, Cronin wouldn't have been in my top 5. Now, I'd honestly put him in the Scott Drew/Dusty May category. I have to put Scott Drew #1 with the NCAA title and a much longer proven tack record, but I'd be thrilled if Indiana hired Cronin. Imagine what he could to with the resources here. Supposedly UCLA's aren't that great. I also think he has that personality and fire that we would like as a fan base. I like the emotion he shows on the sidelines. Watching Archie/Woodson coach the last 8 years has been something. All I'm saying is think about it...

“He’s been at three programs.”   Dude obviously can’t keep a job.  :)

Would think it would be tough to fire a guy who won the conference and was COY just last year. And he has a good class coming in. But it still feels like it’s declining. I was reading about his contract at 1 point and he needs to punch his agent in the throat. The school owes his full base salary through I think 27-28, but despite him making almost 4 mil a year, only something like 400k is base salary. So if they fire him his buyout is only about 1.25 mil. That’s insane.

That is a terrible contract.

I don’t follow recruiting much anymore, so if he has a good class coming in I can see that buying him a year. With Guthridge, iirc, it was clear he was the type of assistant who never recruited and they had nobody coming in. His “retirement “ was swift and painless. He also wasn’t a liked former player like Hubert. I would bet that if you polled UNCs fans half are ready to move on, especially the younger ones.

Missing the tourney 2/4 years is just unacceptable at UNC. Doherty is literally the only one to do it in the modern era and we know what happened to him.
