General Coach Candidate News

I know this is true, but I hate it.  Indiana high school coaches should have no bearing on IU basketball coaching.  Indiana high school recruits decisions should have no bearing on IU basketball.

We want a national program not a regional program.

I couldn't care less if a recruit is from Indiana or Uranus.

Rant over.

This just ignores reality.

1) IN high school coaches are some of the best in the country and can sniff out frauds like Davis and Crean.

2) IN is still one of the most fertile recruiting grounds in the country. Alienating that is plain dumb.

3) piggybacking off #2, when IN kids are winning titles or making national championship game runs at other programs while you’re spinning your wheels at IU with “national “ recruits even the little ol’ grandmas in the stands know it is over for you.

I have said it before and will repeat it again hundred more times: the Indiana job is hard. Huge upside, but hard. There’s too many needles to thread. You can’t just be an ol coach off the Div 1 street and automatically win because it’s Indiana.

Hate Brownwell all you want but maybe hiring a coach that respects the history of IU basketball and knows how important the state of Indiana can be to recruiting might not be a bad thing.   He isn’t going to be the first or even the 5th choice however there are plenty of other crappy routes IU could go.   Getting a sitting ACC coach wouldn’t be the end of the world.   Give me a lifer and grinder and I will give them a chance to prove me or anyone else wrong

Yeah, sure, but how his recruiting?

It would be really impressive if Brownell was winning for a year in a mid-major without attracting a single two star or better recruit in his entire career. (snark)

Because we’ve got that option apparently.

Brownell is so much better prepared for IU than McCollum it boggles my mind that people would feel differently. Putting McCollum in charge of an enterprise the size of IUBB would be like naming a successful McDonald’s regional manager as CEO. It might work, but no one in their right mind would take that risk.

And the ceiling for McCollum, Brownell, Cronin, and others at IU is the same; national champion. It’s just that some have an extensive resume that already shows they can be successful as a P5 coach.

I posted that link to Ray Harper’s resume because he was seven time D2 national coach of the year with multiple d2 championships. Then he went to WKy and had a very good first few years. Then he slowly faded because he couldn’t run a program that was a larger enterprise.

If Brad wants to bring him along who are we to argue.

All of these talking heads say it’s crazy that a president of basketball ops would step down to return to college. You just wait til they find out we convinced two to do it!

but actually would love it if Brad was there looking at Flemming or the other guy who hit a million threes for IU next year

If Brownell makes a final four this year do we still feel hesitant about wanting him? That would give him a better two year run that pretty much any coach we've hired this century.

This is pre-NIL mindset. High school and AAU coaches have about 1% the impact and influence today as they had 5 years ago.  High school recruiting hardly  matters anymore, and for the few guys ready to make an impact in year one, it’s all about the money now - not relationships.

Sounds like Crean and his "It's Indiana" schtick... but he burned bridges with Indiana HS and AAU coaches... and recruited guys like Oladipo, Priller, Sheehey, Muniru, Cody, Hanner, Yogi, April, Anonuby, Gelon... he was all over the map... and for every really good recruit that he got, he managed to sign a bust or two...

Every coach misses on a recruit or two... but we need a guy who can do better than 50%... and then do the development

I would question the athleticism of kids from Uranus.
