I said it last year when Schertz was a hot name…I’m not worried about the ball, but I do wonder how he’d handle everything else at a place like IU. He was responding to message board comments in press conferences at Indiana State. There’s probably 25 ISU fans that care enough to post on their board, no exaggeration.

He’s kind of an odd dude so idk if it’s thin skin or he just likes to mess with people, but I’d be taking a long look at stuff like that if I was doing the hiring.

Those 25 are loyal true fans for sure.

Interesting question.   I do not know the answer to that.

I remember, hopefully clearly, that fans were saying that inquiries were made.  Mark Few was not interested.

If that was the case, it is likely that our consultants made the 2nd-person contact to Few's contact/representative.

So, likely that Dolson and Few never really talked directly about it.  Not unusual, this my people talked to your people stuff.  That way no one has to say they did or did not talk to the other party.  Usually, the head guy does know the feelers go out...and the results.

I meant after yesterday but before yesterday works too.

What is his buyout

May’s buyout, should he leave for another job, starts at $5 million and decreases each of the next four years, from $4 million to $2 million to $1 million to $500,000. If he’s fired without cause, the university will owe him 70% of his remaining base salary.

Very low.

Reviving this thread.  A name to consider might be Mark Byington at Vanderbilt.  Prior to this year he was at James Madison, and we had some good results with another James Madison coach.  Another coach to consider would be Grant McCasland at Texas Tech.  The man has won everywhere he's been.

I haven’t seen enough from Byington in regards to big time tournament games. McCasland is interesting. I want to go young, just not sure who I’d want it to be

The next head coach is probably going to have Midwest ties.  Usually when a program hires a coach they have ties to that region.   Someone like McCasland with Midwest ties and from Texas is most likely to stay in Texas.   A lot of good coaches out there with Midwest ties so IU should be able to get a good candidate.  IU plays in the B1G which is a cash cow so maybe you can get a coach that doesn’t have those ties however i don’t see it

There are a couple of strong candidates in the SEC.

We definitely need a face of the program with a strong staff. We've made all of the mistakes you can make: hiring interim (Davis). Then the President made the hire (Sampson). Then there was Coach Crean. Then the hot young name. Now we have our NBA alum that was picked by the BOT.

I think I trust Dolson on this one. Bynington is interesting. I'm a Beard guy myself. I think we've established our financial resources and are ahead of the curve as revenue sharing sets to come on line. IU is a heavy load for someone to take on and we'll probably pay handsomely for the guy we get. I would rule out Bruce Pearl because of that. He loses the majority of his roster after thus season.

How about Bennett? I heard he doesn't like the transfer portal but he didn't have the money at Virginia that he would have here? Not advocating for him at all just haven't seen his name brought up lately.

Didn't he announce his retirement?

Nah, he's not equipped for the stress of all the new age stuff.  He will likely stay away from the game.

He did retire and at a strange time if I remember correctly. I would think with him having a GM type person to handle the new age stuff and the resources he would have at some universities that he possibly would come back somewhere.

If we're talking about realistic candidates, Bryce Drew absolutely deserves a look. I know people will point to his 0-18 record in the SEC that got him fired, but that Vanderbilt team was delivered a death blow when Darius Garland got hurt early in the year and was announced he wasn't going to return. Drew recruited well at Vanderbilt pre-NIL (Darius Garland, Aaron Nesmith, Saben Lee have all played in the NBA) and has done well building up his teams at GCU through the portal. His GCU teams play fast and heavily emphasize guard play. Only downside hiring Drew is that he coaches an extremely senior-laden team so would not be able to bring over a full roster of players.

Greg Tongel step on down!

Fwiw, I guess his kids and his staffs kids all play together in middle school at a smaller school. One HS assistant told me it’s the best 8th grader team he’s ever seen. So maybe we can get a leg up on 2029 recruiting too!

Probably not the university that fired his sister
