So what's your solution, Obi Wan? You want to re-hire Archie? Let the process run it's course... and stop being such a fatalist...

We are actually arguing over many really great potential coaches. We are only ~10 days out and it seems like we missed on our top choice. It took 10 days last time and got our top choice and we seem to be swinging harder this year.

What exactly does he do that is so innovative?

Someone already posted this but it's a good read. I like reading that he can change up his defense in an offseason because he saw something that wasn't working.

He uses analytics which has ruined the game of basketball.  When you take half the court away to defend it makes it easier to guard you.  It is all 3's and layups and nothing else.  if you aren't hitting your 3's then you are in bad shape.

I like that they're the number 2 kenpom defense but that's just me. I've watched 75% of Alabama's games this year so what you're saying just isn't true. They have struggled to shoot from 3 in games and have still pulled out the win.

LOL!  I have been a fan of IU longer and most on here has been alive.  I know what great IU teams look like and what made those teams great.  If we can't get guys like Stevens or Bennett or Beard then I would rather go with an IU guy over the next flavor of the month coach.  Crean and Archie was considered very good hires who was up and coming and how did that work.

To be fair, Crean spent the first couple of season wading around in the cesspool that Sampson built... but Crean was definitely here too long after screwing up the Cody/Vic team - should have been at least a Final Four run, but Crean could not beat a zone...

Archie just failed to develop the program...

And to your point, both were regaled as good hires... and ultimately, here we are again.

I think we have a misunderstanding of innovative.

None of that is innovative.  That stuff has been around awhile.

Ehh. I think Frank and Race would've stayed. We could be chasing the transfer market right now ourselves as their as some nice players out there.

The Northeastern kid is deciding this weekend. Waiting too long and we might have a JV team out there next season!

That would suck, but will be worth it to hire the right guy. What's the saying? "Mr Right is seldom Mr Right now"

Get the right coach and in 3 years no one will care if we lost a couple of solid players from a lousy team.

Well Oats is winning with other coaches players for the most part

No he’s not. Most of his players are his own. Oats had success at a mid major and has almost immediately carried that over at the P5 level. He won the conference and conference tournament in year 2 and has his squad in the sweet 16. He also plays modern basketball which is both aesthetically pleasing for fans and attractive to recruits hoping to play in the NBA. Not at all comparable to Mike Davis really.

You dont see any other teams playing fast, shooting 3s and playing tough defense?

Seriously?

I don't want to belabor a point and I posted this article a couple hours ago about Oats, but if anyone reads it, you'll see what Oats really has working for him is ......... AN ACTUAL WINNING PLAN.

https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/news/ball-oats-how-alabama-became-an-sec-powerhouse-overnight-on-its-way-to-possibly-changing-college-basketball/

Some people, including Scott Dolson, refer to this as "vision". Other people refer to it as "culture" ------ all the same thing really. It's about establishing a "true north" direction for something ---- a company, a non-profit, a sports organization, etc. and it is what ultimately leads to establishing a BRAND or IDENTITY (something else Dolson spoke of though he couldn't really articulate what the IU identity was when asked).

And THAT is what we need. Dolson said as much in his press conference ---- someone who has a vision and someone who can convince Dolson of an ability to put it into action.

It's the same reason the Cubs hired Theo. He had a plan to build a winning culture from the inside out. A world series and however many playoff appearances in a row and he obviously accomplished what he set out to do.

So I cannot dismiss Oats for that simple reason. Especially because he did it quickly. But I will happily accept anybody --- including those with Hoosier ties --- who understand this concept and who can actually DO WHAT THEY CLAIM THEY CAN.

This is a great Article. Tell Chris to cut the check, I want OATS!

It's called "being a fan". :D

I had season tickets when we were #1 in 2013.

Then we lost to a Zone and didn't watch the next year because of CTC.

You might be onto something..

Do some of you actually think Oats is a real possibility? Sorry, I just don't see it adding up. Might be nice to think about, but 0 chance he comes here. 0. Would make no sense at all.

I have no idea what he wants to do or the contract details, but I'd have to think it's at least as possible as getting the coach of the Boston Celtics, if not more.

I'll be excited if IU pulls it off.
