General Coach Candidate News

Recommended Posts

Imagine if you will, the BOT announces that the selection of Archie's replacement has been delegated solely to btb and it must make its decision within 48 hours.  lol

Genuinely think we’d come up with a better long term solution, although it would take some HEATED discussion.

Assuming the dream candidates and coaches at high rankings programs currently are not in the running..

I think we settle on Dane Fife as a collective. Indiana guy, recruiting history, brings the Indiana fans together.

Current consensus?

  1. We would reach out to Stevens and get turned down.
  2. Put out feelers to Musselman, Matta, Beilein and Drew.and then
  3. Set up a blue ribbon interview panel for those in line 2 that were interested, Fife, Nored, Shrewsbury, maybe Alexander or C Smith

Blue ribbon BTB interview Panel?

  1. Treesh cause if we didn't we'd never hear the end of it
  2. rcs because someone's gotta want to organize this ****
  3. Usps and Demo (for sanity and substantive expertise)
  4. Josh (for identifying those who drink and make bad decisions)
  5. Chris for IU connections
  6. Feathery cause there's nothing better than being feathery
  7. Old Fart and cthomas for context, and
  8. Troy's mother because, what the hell that'd be funny

My problem with him is he had a few rough years at Michigan in the beginning. What if it takes him a few years to get IU going as it did with Michigan. Then he's in his 70's coaching IU to get into the tourney. I'm just hoping for someone younger so we have our coach for the next so many years.

Yeah, I love Beilein. The man’s as good as it gets. But if you’re hiring him, you’re doing so with a succession plan already in place. So let’s just get this out of the way right now:

John Beilein plus Jordan Hulls.

Tell me Hulls after sitting next to Beilein for 5 years wouldn’t be ready to roll.

This is not what I want but the latest info was Thad Matta with Michael Lewis as associate head coach, Drew Adams as an assistant, and then get someone with some diversity to fill out the staff. Matta would have to show he is healthy. From what I've heard he has trouble sitting through the Butler games that he attends.

If healthy, I wouldn't be opposed.  May be a big if though.

I'll meet you all at Buffalouis at 7PM tonight!

Also, Mussleman is CTC 2.0. I'm fully convinced of this.

I initially was a big Thad Matta advocate -- obviously with the caveat that he's healthy. I thought after a few years away, he'd get recharged, get healthy and be ready for another run at coaching. But I'm really starting to cool to that idea. Seems as if he was essentially the victim of a botched back surgery. In reading about some of his troubles he had a few years back -- he could barley walk, he couldn't sit through a game, couldn't take his shoes or pants off after a game. Just doesn't seem as if he's recovered -- or recovered enough to be the top-notch coach he was before all this happened. I'm really cooling to him as a possibility.

I learned that by looking at some of the buyouts you can eliminate a lot of these guys. The universities clearly didn't want poachers. I also learned that most buyouts are technically the coach's debt and not the poaching university's which I found interesting. I'm sure that's a moot point through negotiations but still interesting.

I'm going to step out on a sturdy limb and say Beilein will be the next IU Coach.  We all know that isn't a long term solution, but, I think 4-8 years with John at the helm with the understanding succession will be sooner and not later and allow the program along with Beilein's help to plan for that isn't a bad thing..at all.  I think this would excite the base and give us one of the best X's and O'x guys around...guy can flat out Coach and minus his stint in Cleveland all he has ever had is success.   This is a low risk move for the Trustee's to approve.  Success everywhere, stand up guy and his past players love him.
