What have they done to prove they're invested?! 

  • Took years to fire a mediocre coach we knew couldn't take us to where we wanted to go (contract extension)
  • Overpaid for an up and comer after having several other coaches not want to go into the IU fishbowl
  • Aren't willing to play deep in the grey area needed to get top recruits (when the coach has shown he can't coach up lesser talent)

What they've done?

  • Found money to build a practice facility
  • Updated an outdated building

Yes, the IU job has a few built in cons: overbearing alums and fans, unrealistic expectations, impatience, unwillingness to pay under the table. But, the pros are significant and real, and are only comparable at about ten or twenty programs nationally. In fact, I defy y'all to name more than about 15 programs that can compare with IUBB's attractiveness given these criteria. 

By the way Treesh... if you're buying into my logic here remember; this still IN NO WAY means that Brad Stevens has or will ever have any interest in ever coaching college basketball again.

 

This is the old way of looking at the attractiveness of coaching positions.  As the recent past has shown us you can build a winning program just about anywhere.  Few, Beard, Bennett, Drew, Barnes, Sampson, Pearl, etc. are at non-traditional basketball powers that lack a lot of what you've referenced above.  This fanbase would be absolute giddy with the results of most of these programs.  Why are they at those programs and not at bigger, more prestigious basketball schools?

Like what is attractive at many other jobs; paycheck, bosses to include leeway to do your job, coworkers, etc. 

Does it bother any of those coaches that they can only fill an 8,000 seat stadium instead of filling a 17,000 seat Assembly Hall with crazy @$$ fans?  I doubt it.  They're concerned about being able to get the recruits they target, how they're allowed to interact with them, (both restraints put on them by their bosses).  Recruiting base is nice but it's not the same as it used to be.  The landscape of college basketball has changed while we're still trying to get out of the 80s.  That's from the top down.

The first three examples of proven coaches who won big at their next stop instead of staying where they already were successful were, as you said "cheating d-bags."

I would imagine he wanted enough that he could keep guys from going to a mid major for a HC gig.  Continuity is key

I think I actually bought an "It's Miller's Time" T-shirt or something right after he was hired. I also bought a Crean & Crimson shirt when the previous administration took over. Needless to say, if at some point we move on from Archie -- I will not be buying a shirt celebrating the new coach ...

Hire a coach that can coach. I guy that you believe will call a timeout with the game on the line and draw up the right play, a play that was practiced and perfected in practice. A coach that knows his strengths and weaknesses and hires a staff to complement him. Hire a coach that loves the game and his players and the rest will work itself out.

We just can’t afford to hire someone with massive deficiencies unless they can hide them by surrounding themselves with the right coaches and players. Everyone of the coaches we’ve hired since Knight have had glaring issues that were obvious before we hired them. When an opposing fanbase can outline all of the persistent faults of a coach we hire and then have all of them play out is a sign we didn’t do our homework.

I thought Archie's hire was a double, maybe stretching it into a triple, I thought Allen hire was a strikeout that the catcher missed the 3rd strike and we got to 1st base. So what I'm saying I can't judge hire for crap. I also think this is just an average job in the Big ten these days, slightly higher than Nebraska, & Rutgers, maybe Northwestern. I have zero confidence that we make a great hire next time.

I thought it was a double and hoping for an error.  Do I get partial credit for being right on the error part?
