I think this search will say a lot about whether Nebraska or Alabama is the better analogy. Do we get our Nick Saban, or our Mike Riley?

Or Mike Shula or Mike Price or Dennis Franchione or Mike Dubose.

They went through a pretty rough stretch too.

How are you going to group McDermott and McCollum in the same category here? Their similarities end after the first two letters of their last name. McDermott has been a D1 coach for nearly 25 years and the last four years has gone sweet 16, round of 32, elite 8, sweet 16. I’d be very happy if IU landed him.

There are quite a few people on here that think short, Stevens, Pearl, Drew that IU will have failed. Well maybe it's not quite a few, just a couple boisterous negative nellys

I don't think anyone doubts McCollum's ability to coach X's and O's. But there are several concerns with McCollum and how it pertains to the IU job.

-lack of P5 experience

-lack of staff with P5 experience

-lack of experience with NIL and the transfer portal

-doesn't have a roster full of guys he can bring with

-pace/style of play concerning to players with high end talent/NBA aspirations

There's an awful lot of question marks for a guy who is going to be expected to win right away. Can he do it? Sure. Would I expect him too? Probably not. How does he fare year 2 when the pressure ratchets up?

All of these are legitimate concerns.

Look at you posting something with some actual thought and intelligence.  Keep it up.

Thanks for this. In particular, I think the points about McCollum are insightful.

It's my pleasure. I thought so too. I really like McCollum as a coach but wonder if his personality fits the job at this stage in his career.

don't care about the bold, it's 5 guys on a court scoring a basketball. Don't make it more than it is.

Lack of experience with NIL and transfer portal...... ehhhh he has identified talent for a long time on who to recruit and develop. I think he'd excel at that quickly.

Doesn't have a roster full of guys he can bring with? Yes he does

Idc about pace of play. It's a 30 sec shot clock for everyone.

Yes, those are opinions about the possible concerns of McCollum.

-He's never coached against guys like Tom Izzo, Matt Painter, Brad Underwood. He's never experienced a hostile B10 or P5 road environment. He's never faced the adversity of going on 3-4 game losing streak in the doldrums of January. Having P5 experience with an experienced staff absolutely matters to an extent. Especially at a job like Indiana. To suggest otherwise is silly. A lot of what he would experience at IU would be on the job training.

-Identifying talent that can compete at NW Missouri State is a lot different than identifying talent that can compete for B10 championships.

-Doesn't have a roster full of guys he can bring who you could realistically expect to compete for a B10 championship and a high seed in the tournament...should have prefaced that better.

-30 second shot clock has nothing to do with what I said.

There has been a crap ton of Rabby bashing here over the last few months and I don’t get it. If people don’t want to pay for his services or read what he puts out then don’t.

why come to another board and bash him? It’s not just you, I’ve read it here over and over again.

I use a friend account because I'm too cheap to pay so I don't have posting abilities over there. But I think most people have an account over there because he is the best when it comes to recruiting

So did Cig’s. Got demolished by 2 of the last 3 teams they played?

Are you out on IU football too?

IUFB was predicted to be a bottom feeder in the conference and got "demolished" by the two teams that played for the championship. I think May is a good coach, but the optics are not great since he signed his contract extension.

I think It's mostly due to charging for the same info available everywhere else and linking up so closely with the HH idiots.

No, I don't think you'd have to "surround" McCollum with at least one elite recruiter. I think that McCollum would need to hire at least one elite recruiter of his own choosing.

But, let's be honest. What coach of ANY major bball program doesn't have at least one ace recruiter on staff? It's just part of the job.

And how does he go about hiring an Elite Recruiter? are there a ton of those guys in the D2 coaching circles/ ranks ? The ones in power conference coaching right now are they gonna leave their power conference current assistants job to come work for a D2 guy ?

Anyone willing to take a break from all the repetitive points, just let a day happen and whoever hears sees anything wait for them to post it here?

Agreed. Maybe we can create another thread called "new coach debate/discussion" and move this bulljive elsewhere

Correct, not coached against those guys.

I don't necessarily believe the bold, he has guys on his roster that would really help us now. If we had our roster plus his PG, mercy.

And yes, 30 sec shot clock does, the pace of play is overblown.

The basketball world doesn’t work like D3 guys stick with D3 guys, D2 only talk to D2 guys, etc. it’s not all that neat and clean. McCollum is supposedly friends with May and McCasland. Maybe they will have referrals for him. Maybe Ben already has good connections to strong assistant candidates. We just don’t know.
