Meniscus tear and he basically sat out his whole senior year.   Not playing all year dropped his ranking.   Before the injury he was rising each time they came out with the new ones.    Injury had to be worse then they let on to be out as long as he has been and he still is being brought back slowly by the staff

Does "basically" mean he played up to the injury but not after at all?

To add to this, before his injury he was 247 composite top 75, with a lot of time ranked in the 60s. As of January, he was 71st. When the ranking were updated 2 months later, he was in the 100s and finished at 114.

Here is an indication of how athletic Newton is: In his 2nd game back, he blocked the dunk attempt of the #1 player in the 2023 class, Isaiah Collier.

Scoring wise he still has to improve, but a solid-built, athletic 6-3 who has a 6-10 wingspan is likely to find playing time for his defense.

He was as high as 43 in Rivals:

Indiana has someone very connected with Reeves and has a big advantage communicating through back channels. Reeves will absolutely be transferring but it may be a bit before he announces a decision as to where. My understanding is that he is making sure academics are taken care of to make sure he can graduate and then transfer as a grad transfer. We have a current player along with someone connected with Reeves that has been in communication and been FaceTiming with him and can say we will very much have a real chance here. It sounds like Woody and Juwan may be squaring up in the ring on this one.

If Indiana can land him that would be massive. He just fits what this team is missing. I think he makes IU a legit Final Four contender. I have to think the staff/players know this and will do what it takes to get him.

Edit: IF IU lands him, I don't think national idiots will have us very high still in the rankings which is fine by me. I like how this team is being slept on.

Any chance he redshirts? That would certainly clarify the depth chart and give him time to get 100% healthy.

He got injured in spring of 2022.  Missed all of the AAU season before his senior year.   They said they were in no hurry to rush back since he already had his scholly.  He then sat out all of his senior year besides a handful of games at the end of the year.  He would play a game and then sit out the next game.    He looked good in the game I watched on tv however he still had a huge brace on.   In my opinion that injury was more serious then they let on because he has basically hasn’t played many games in over a year and half and IU staff is still taken it slow.     I hope he gets fully cleared this year or if he isn’t I hope he takes the time to get it right because if he is fully healthy he is the type of guard that IU has been missing

I agree with your 2nd comment because I do think we are most likely being underrated.  As far as your 1st comment, that currently is a stretch. A lot still depends on how this team gels together.  I think CMW, staff and senior leadership can get it done but the work needs to be put in by all!

I said it before, if CMW and staff adds someone, I want it to be Reeves.  You are exactly right, it’s what this team exactly needs and that will push Galloway to a more productive roll, 6th man!

For sure a ton of questions..X coming off an injury, Mack is just a freshman, Malik/Ke'el were limited as freshman, Banks/Gunn didn't do much in their first year.

I feel Reeves/Trey offset each other so well. I just like Trey's game coming off the bench as a 6 man.

Spot on.

Fully healthy, Newton can be a devastating defender. He’s not the scorer Calbert was, but his situation is so much like Cheaney’s where he is almost a complete unknown.

Are recruits just not buying what Cal is selling anymore?

Things certainly seem “disjointed” for Cal/UK this off season but on the other hand MM is one of IU’s highest rated recruits since 2000, and Im thrilled we landed him, but Cal has 3 guys coming in rated higher than MM this year alone (and he has 4 of the top 16 2023 guys coming in).

The problem? UK is made up of 5 freshmen and 2 sophomores who between them have played a total of 96 minutes.

Calipari has no experience whatsoever. It’s no coincidence his teams have been underachieving the past 6 years.

Although it is often repeated……Cheaney was not an almost completely unknown player. Hoopscoop, which was big back in the day, had him ranked 31st in the country and other services had him in their top 50. He was overshadowed by the burger boys in IU’s ‘89 class but the frequently stated narrative that he was a lowly ranked unknown recruit is not accurate.

I think he's past his peak as a coach. You see this sometimes with coaches once they get into their 60's. They just don't have the recruiting energy and charisma they once did, and it doesn't take long for players to notice. (and before someone mentions Woodson, I'm talking about coaches who have been doing this for decades)

He's gone from boasting about how he can get any guy he wants, whenever he wants, to practically begging the UK fanbase for patience and understanding. Izzo is kind of in the same boat. He used to just win all the time, now he does a lot more whining. Getting old sucks.

Disagree on Izzo.

Michigan St has been extremely successful consistently - very few times over his career can you say the Spartans have fielded a “bad” team. Can’t recall a time when Izzo has ever had his program in the disarray Kentucky has been the last 3 years.

‘23 top 100ish SF Jordan Burks commits to UK after de-commiting from Ole Miss. So now they have 8.

  • Composite rated 172.
  • Extremely skinny -- I've seen 6'9", 180.
  • Talented, but one of the reasons he is ranked low is supposedly because he is immature (even for an 18 year old).

I other words, exactly what will not help Kentucky. It gets them closer to being able to play 5 v 5 in practice, but leaves them with six freshmen, and two sophs who averaged less than 10 mpg last year.  Mulcahy would be a home run for them, but I wonder if he's even interested in dealing with a team that will need to be babysat by him as a veteran player, when he would have to do so without any help from other veteran players.

Cal should probably hurry it up because they have games next month.
