Not all turnovers are created equal.  Watching the game Monteverde had a rough 2nd quarter.  JHS had 4 TO during that stretch with one of those being a debatable call for a travel.   The thing that will be going for JHS to get him ready for the Big 10 will be playing the National schedule that his high school is playing.  He is playing against high D1 power 5 talent almost every night.  JHS let’s the game come to him and he really doesn’t look to go off scoring wise.  He won’t be flashy  and score a ton but seems to be the engine that makes that powerhouse high school team run.    4 made FTs last night all in very high pressure situations.
Don’t know if he starts day 1 but with a summer to work with college coaches I think he will have a chance to contribute day 1

My point was more along the lines of "he's not the 'help is on the way' kid we can hand the keys to.  I have no doubt he can contribute but no field goals and 5  turnovers against the caliber of kid he'll see at the college level doesn't lend itself to the top dog as a freshman.

Bossi on today's Montverde game in the City of Palms Classic

Just a week ago, powerful Montverde (Fla.) Academy lost at the buzzer to Duncanville (Texas) High. If there were any worries about a hangover in their next event, they ended them quick on Saturday. They jumped all over a talented Lilburn (Ga.) Berkmar team early and cruised home to a 76-51 victory.

With five players scoring between 10 and 16 points, it is hard to lock in on just one guy but we'll go with Indiana bound guard Jalen Hood-Schifino, Texas bound wing Dillon Mitchell and five-star junior four man Kwame Evans because of how versatile each of them is defensively.

Hood-Schifino is going to arrive at Indiana physically ready to compete in the Big Ten. He's a smart player who can play all three perimeter spots and he has a calming influence. His three ball has been dropping the last few times we've seen him play and that's encouraging. The one thing that Hood-Schifino is always going to do, though, is defend. That commitment to locking up will endear him to Mike Woodson and staff quickly. He finished with 16 points, six rebounds and a pair of assists.

When it comes to Mitchell, he may have the most potential as a wing defender of any player in the class of 2022. He's freaky athletic finishing at the rim but he's every bit as impressive with his lateral quickness and ability to be in the right place at the right time. He finishes lobs, crashes the glass and is a dangerous straight line driver. If he gets his jump shot ironed out, the sky is the limit for him in college and beyond.

Finally, Evans is ranked among the top five in 2023 and can be inconsistent. At Montverde he's toughened up, found a balance of playing inside and hunting deep jumpers but what is most impressive is his defensive versatility. It is hard to put into writing the things he's capable of but each time out he makes a few wow plays. He had three steals and two blocks to go with his 10 points and six rebounds in just under 16 minutes.

Mike Woodson and Kenya Hunter in to see Jalen Hood-Schifino at the City of Palms Classic.  Obviously, he's also getting to watch Kwame Evans and Derik Queen.

Is that Wittman sitting between the two?

The program is in good hands. It might not be popular with some of our fans, but kids with a defensive mentality pop up quite frequently in his targets. He clearly knows the type of team he wants and is going out to get them. I'm more than fine with the direction he wants to take us.

Montverde over Orlando Christian Prep 75 - 34 in the City of Palms Classic and will face Milton (GA) tomorrow at 9:00 p.m.  Haven't seen any individual stats but this comment from Elite High School Scouting:  Nice outings as well from  ‘23 KJ Evans & ‘22s Jalen Hood-Schifino (Indiana) in the runaway.

Comment on Jalen from the City of Palms -- Jalen Hood-Schifino had a solid game with Mike Woodson and staff in attendance. The Indiana signee plays under control and never tries to do too much. He is just the type of floor general that a team full of star power like Montverde needs.

Edited for accuracy.

Montverde over Milton (Bruce Thornton) 59-44 to move into the championship game of the City of Palms Classic to face Oak Hill.  Jalen 12 pts. on 4-8 FG; 1-3 on 3s; 3-4 FT; 5 reb; 3 asst; 1 stl; 0 blk; 0 TO.

Thornton finished with 16 pts. on 5-16 FG.

Interesting sidelight.  Milton again finished with 0 bench points, doing so in back-to-back games, which was likely the determining factor here. Milton has a combined 2 bench points in the three games played at the COP so far.

Assuming JHS was matched up with Thornton on both ends. Both played the entire 32 minutes.

JHS with:

  • 12 points on 8 shots
  • 3 assists,
  • 0 TOs,
  • 5 rebounds, and
  • 2 fouls.

Thornton with:

  • 12 points on 16 shots,
  • 4 assists,
  • 5 turnovers,
  • 11 rebounds, and
  • 3 fouls.

JHS has a better supporting cast, but outplaying Bruce Thronton in a head to head matchup is a good thing to see for sure.

Would like to know more about the 16 shots for Thornton though. Was he just chucking everything or was he getting open a lot and missed some open shots?

Montverde defeated Oak Hill 60-55 to win the championship of the City of Palms Classic.  Jalen with 10 pts. on just 2-11 FG; 1-4 on 3s; 5-6 FT; 4 reb; 5 asst; 0 stl; 0 blk; 1 TO.  He was named to the All City of Palms Classic team.

...Jalen Hood-Schifino also struggled offensively, but scored the game-securing free-throws for Montverde, and managed to finish with 10 points. The Indiana signee is one of the best on-ball defenders in high school basketball and held five-star junior Caleb Foster to only two field goals.

This is what I like about Jalen…even when his shot is off, he does things to help your team win. Play good defense, get some assists, and don’t turn the ball over much. And how long has it been since we had a PG who would knock down clutch FTs.
