Bracketology and Team Resumes

Recommended Posts

Super pumped for today. I get the best case scenario is an 11 seed but still. I wanted Indiana to make the big dance this year and they are. They are capable of winning a game or two. Matrix has the 6 seeds as Alabama, LSU, Texas, and Colorado State. I think if both Richmond and A&M win, Indiana will be in Dayton. If one of them win, it'll be 50/50 I think.

Rutgers seems to be the most polarizing team.  I’ve seen them from in the last byes to not even in the first four out.  My opinion is more along the lines of the latter.

the good:

6 quad 1 wins.  12-8 conference record (which I think for overall resume is irrelevant)

the bad:

very weak non-con SOS

horrible bad losses including a home court quad 4 loss and a loss to Massachusetts.

Bad efficiency metrics (70s) and bad NET (70s)

did not accumulate wins and only 4 over .500

Eye test tells me they are in but we will see. Matrix has them out, but Lunardi and other big media guys have them in.

This is largely unchanged on this morning’s update. Sub Illinois for UCLA and VT for ND.

I hope we're not out west, but Alabama doesn't scare me at all.  That one's a toss-up imo.

Texas Tech, however, is our team on steroids.  Not great offensively, but incredibly stingy on defense due to being very long and physical.

I'd much prefer the majority of teams in our region to be the high-scoring variety rather than elite defensively.

Happy selection Sunday everyone.   One of my favorite Holidays of the year.    Its also a sad day at the USPS household because i know the season is almost over if im writing this.   Thanks again to everyone that makes this site not just the best indiana basketball community on the internet but the best college basketball community and its not really close.    The discussion and knowledge for hoops on the board is second to none.   For the old folks we knew all that but hopefully the new posters and those lurkers can see that and start to post more.   I didnt have alot of free time to dive deep into the bracket this year like years past but here is my projections

1 seeds-     Zags, Arizona, Kansas, Baylor

this is the Zags year in my opinion.  I know there will always be questions by some that      say  they dont play anybody but that wont be me.    Non Con games against(9,10,13,17,30)  WCC was stronger then it has ever been with 3 other teams in the discussion for an at-large bid

2- Kentucky, Auburn, Duke, Nova

If Kansas would of lost Kentucky would of been the last 1 seed instead of Kansas since they beat them by 100 at Kansas.  If they would of been close together on the seed list i would of used head to head.    Auburn has struggled away from home lately but still has a strong resume

3-  Purdue, Tenn, Wisky, Texas Tech

Wisky is one of those teams where their predictive metrics are not great but the results based metrics are really good.   9-2 in true road games     They dont win pretty but they win.   i can see them lower but they shouldnt be lower

4-  Illinois, UCLA, Providence, Arkansas

Arkansas might be one of the hottest teams entering the tournament     i was surprised they laid an egg yesterday but they have 2 players playing really good

5- Iowa, Houston, Uconn, Bama

Bama has one of the craziest resume you will see.    really good wins and some head scratching loses.

6.Texas, LSU, St Marys, Colorado St

Texas had big expectations coming into the year and to date they havent lived up to the hype     No idea what the committee will do with a team that coach got fired the day before selection sunday.   It takes a special piece of trash of a coach to do that.   i will miss my gif for him losing

7-USC, Creighton, Sparty, Boise St,

Creighton is the team to keep an eye on.   They entered the end of the year minus their stud point guard and on the bubble.   they ended up playing some eye pleasing basketball and are loaded with young talent.   Buckeyes are trending in the opposite direction

8-Ohio St, Murray St, San Diego St, Marquette,

Murray St has only lost 2 games all year    that is impressive and have some quality wins to go along with that record.   They deserve to be wearing white

9-TCU,North Carolina, Seton Hall, Memphis,

10-Loyola,Iowa St,  Miami, San Francisco,

11.  IU,Virginia tech, Davidson, A&M

12  .Last 4 in (wyoming, Michigan, SMU, Xavier) UAB, Chattanogga

im struggling big time with the bottom more then usual.   Wish i had more time to scrub it and really compare these teams.  Im really excited to see what the committee decides to do at the bottom (Subject to change if i have time to look at it again)

teams left out in no order

Rutgers, Notre Dame, North Texas,  Vcu, Byu, Oklahoma, Florida, Wake

13. South Dakota St, New Mexico St, akron, Princeton/Yale

14. Vermont, Delaware, Montana St, Colgate

15. Longwood, St Peters, CSU-Fullerton, Georgia St

16.Jacksonville St, Norfolk St(First 4 Wright St, Bryant, Texas Southern, Texas A&M CC

Probably some mistakes didnt get a chance to proof read      Enjoy selection Sunday Banners you guys deserve it.

Rutgers earn the 4th seed in this years B10 tournament and you are leaving them off?

Recounted at my at larges......and I was one short, so I need to add one in.

I don't like any of them, but the choices I have are in no particular order:

Wake Forest, SMU, Xavier, BYU, Notre Dame, North Texas, and VCU.  I don't really consider Rutgers an option with their incredibly low efficiency and NET.

So going with 'two strikes and out'.

Wake Forest has one strike -- Quad looks bad.

North Texas has one strike -- Quad looks bad.  Like really bad.

VCU has two strikes -- bad efficiency and a 56 NET.

BYU -- nothing really outlandish.  Worst point would be 53 NET.

Notre Dame -- one strike -- quads not great.

SMU -- one strike -- quads not great

Xavier -- one strike -- overall W/L

And that only eliminates VCU.  Crap.  Well, I do not see the committee picking North Texas with one quad win, so remove them.  Don't see them picking Wake Forest with their non-conference SOS as the final pick,so remove them.  That leaves BYU, Notre Dame, SMU and Xavier.  SMU accumulated wins, but their quad doesn't match up, so remove them.  Now at BYU, Notre Dame, and Xavier.  At that point the one thing that really separates them is NET -- Xavier decently ahead of BYU and Notre Dame.  So Xavier is my last team.

Uspshoosier, you are the best of the best.

And your bracket makes me a glad Hoosier!

Maybe 1 day closer to retirement I will start submitting my bracket to the matrix under BT Banners bracketology.  Need more time to do that though because so much more goes into it then selecting and seeding the teams.  Placing them in the right regions is more difficult to do then what I’m doing right now for fun

After the way we played in the B10 tournament and against Purdue , I don’t think we have too many matchup issues.  Even if we play a team not good offensively but stingy defensively, we still matchup ok with them!

Yep.  Washington won the regular season pac 12 in 2012 and got left out.   Conference record and standings don’t matter.

definitely a tough choice but someone is getting left out.    Don’t lose to Lafayette at home or Umass on the road and they wouldn’t have to worry about being left out

I think he is correct.  18-14 overall, NET in the 70s, efficiency in the 70s, a quad 4 loss and two quad three losses.  Every bubble team has warts but theirs are huge.

Houston has a chance to get their first Q1 win today.  Lol.   Win against SMU is only win against team close to the field.   If they lose today they probably shouldn’t be a 5 seed like I have them they should be a 6 or 7 but I think the committee already has them set for seeding

Indiana is going to be in Dayton or somewhere close where Indiana fans can travel, but not too close of course.

NCAA is trying to recoup the money it’s been missing the past two years.

Dayton, Pitt, or South Carolina.

Maybe Dallas since there are a lot of alum in Dallas.
