IUBB vs Jacksonville - Game Thread - 12/22/18

Absolutely loving the Clifton and Jake lineups. They place a really smart game. Execution needs fine tuning, but I love how often they make the smart pass, play in position, and work it to each other inside. Best pass into the post I’ve seen this year came from Clifton on the perimeter, over the defender to Jake for the easy bucket.

There you go. A game where the team did everything they were supposed to do. Way to close out the non-conference. Read somewhere it was the first time in however many years we didn't have a sub-100 KenPom loss in the non-con schedule.

Archie is proving his chops. Personally, I've seen plenty of improvement from this team since Arkansas and Duke.

Team has really grown agreed. Now we just have to defend the Hall and win a few on the road.

Been to a few games and have noticed that Romeo does not go greet the officials after being introduced during the starting lineup announcement.  All other players do, on both teams. Anyone know the reason?

Wasted energy?  I’ve always thought that’s a brown nose move.

Problem though is Moore is perhaps the worst defender I have ever seen at this level.   I was sitting on the Jax end of the court tonight, so I got IU on defense in the 2nd half.  He was blown by almost every time his man had the ball.   His feet looked like they were encased in lead.   That Jax team was awful.  Nothing more than a pad the bank account game for them, and an opportunity for us to work on some things.   Jax changed defenses a few times and I wouldn't be one bit surprised if the coaches agreed on that prior to the game.   Hard to really judge anyone by what we saw tonight.

These refs have been really bad. I’m getting tired of saying this virtually every game.

I actually thought they let them play in the first half.  The second half, on the other hand, was horrendous!  I do agree with you though, college bb officiating has been horrible this year.

Thankfully, the poor officiating was only an minor inconvenience in this game, but am I (and the entire crowd, and coaching staff) missing something on that uncalled over and back? Not only was it obvious that one player touched the pass in the frontcourt, but I wondered if that was a reviewable call.  Also, the foot out of bounds call on Anderson was bad, but after re-watching it was closer than I initially thought.

Overall, it was a pretty decent performance - hard to judge from the quality of the opponent.  Morgan is simply a complete basketball player - and there are very few of those around.  I'm glad Archie is recruiting the hell out of Indiana, but he needs to keep in mind that his best player on this roster was from out of state.  Finally, one thing I'd really like to see us improve upon is shot selection.  It seems like everybody has the green light all of the time.

Watching live, I didn't think Damezi was even close to the baseline.  However, at the first break I went back and looked closer. I do believe the ball off his foot was touching the line.  His heel was up, but it was very close.  I thought the over and back was a missed call, but the announcers said you have to have control.  I don't know for sure on that rule.

I don’t known why they would create the rule with such a difficult and subjective requirement. “Control” is control to all of the refereeing difficulties in the NFL. Should just be over and back if the inbounding team touches the ball. Still room for some confusion, but far less.

This is what I found.

Rule 9-12.4 now permits either an offensive or defensive player to be the first to touch the ball in the backcourt when it has been deflected by the defense into the backcourt regardless of who was the last team to touch the ball before it went into the backcourt. This will correct unfairness in the past backcourt rule. Before, if a defensive player hit the ball into the backcourt, the offensive player wasn’t allowed to touch it giving the defensive player the advantage to get to the ball with ease, and in most situations get easy fast break points.

Doesn't the first sentence contradict itself?

I’ve finally gotten to the point where I enjoy watching the NBA more than college which is something I never thought I’d say a few years ago. At this point watching anything other than IU games is just unbearable. The NBA is just more entertaining now I think. Not a free throw contest and constant stopping. They let them play.

One of the many great things about the holiday season:  Purdue fans have to think about those iconic candy stripes every time they see or eat a candy cane.
