To me, the NIT is almost a no-win situation. Say we get hot and put together 4-5 good games (or whatever it takes) and win the tourney. Yay, we just won the NIT. So what! ... Or say that we lose our first game -- that only adds to the embarrassment of getting smoked by Rutgers. ... I'd just as soon skip it and start thinking about 2018-19. Just my opinion, though.

When the regular season conference champ doesn’t get the automatic bid, they automatically go to the NIT.
FWIW, if Illinois State was to win today, Loyola Chicago would fill one of those NIT automatic spots. And, Loyola is very comfortably stomping ISU in the second half.

Florida Gulf Coast, #1 seed in the Atlantic Sun was a no-show today in their tourney final, getting run out of the gym by Lipscomb. That will be another auto bid to the NIT.

When you look at how many smaller conference tourneys there are, that's a lot of potential auto bids. That doesn't make this thread meaningless, but our NIT chances are probably about 1% at this point, if that.
