IU at Illinois Game Thread (1/24 - 9pm - BTN)

Recommended Posts

Once Archie and Underwood get players in here these teams may go places. Under Crean and Groce these were by far the two most horrifically coached teams in the conference but I see improvement for both teams under their new coaches systems once they get their own players in there.

Illinois did nothing but chuck 3's and ran no offense under Groce and now do run somewhat of an offense and once Underwood has his own players they will be an annual tourney team as they should be. I would argue given their hierarchy historically in conference these 2 teams (outside of IU's 2012-2013 season) have been most disappointing last 10 years in Big Ten due to some terrible administration decisions by both departments with hires.

Lastly this board is bi polar. We win we are the greatest thing since sliced bread. We lose a few impatient people think Archie is the wrong coach. The truth lies in between probably.

No that's on the players. The system is getting them open looks. If they're shooting worse then they need to get in the gym. No one on this staff has done anything to make them shoot worse, such as change their form or like Crean did with Stan Robinson.....make him shoot with his off hand.

Crean didn't have him do that, he did it on his own with the recommendation from Will.

If the staff didn't impact shooting how do you account for almost the entire team getting worse from the line and from 3 point range. Might have something to do with it

Anyway, I have to get up early.  I'm going to bed angry because we just got whooped for the 4th time by an inferior team.  Some people make excuses for that and promise how great the rainbow is going to be.  Some people prefer to see facts.  But man...those facts are ugly.  Hopefully Archie can become elite.  He has a long ways to go.

Why aren't layers showing better percentages from 2s, 3s, and FTs? They're having to actually work on defense. That's not something they've ever done while at IU before this season.

No other coach was going to come in here and have a better record. If you've given up on Archie this early that's all good but don't come sprinting back trying to catch the train when he starts it rolling.

In Archies mind this is a 3-4 year build. He isn't going to panic like we are. Every time he has talked to the fanbase he's told us.

I'm just tired of waiting and without some big roster changes, next year will be similar to this year. It's not Archies fault but I want results now, or at least next year. Wish I could see it.

We didn't play great in the second half, but I think Illinois had something to do with that. They put great pressure on our guards, who aren't strong with the ball anyway, and made them really uncomfortable. Their trapping and pressure made us play faster and threw our timing off making it difficult to feed the post. Even with the turn overs, a few more made free throws and we would all be happy. I think this team is causing me to develop a bi-polar disorder.

I am pro-Archie but I find it hard to believe that no other coach could have survived the gauntlet of the worst Wiscy  team in decades, a bad UI team, Indiana State and IUPIUFWABC123 or whatever the hell that Fort Wayne school is called.

Next year should have improved PG play, more size, a senior Morgan, and better shooters. Our seniors this year play like 15 year olds so the youth factor shouldn't result in much of a drop off between who we're losing and who's coming in.

The players have 24/7 access to an excellent basketball facility. If they're struggling with their shot that's on them to fix. There's only so much Archie can do.

This roster is terrible. This is why many fans wanted Crean gone earlier, before the roster became a joke. Instead we are going to wait patiently for it to be fixed.

Anyone down on Archie doesn’t know basketball. His system is getting open looks. We can’t make shots. We have a roster of low IQ players. The defense will be effective once we get rolling.

Toward the end, and after the game I got to thinking - just how much worse is this team than last year's?  Our defense is better.  We've cut the turnovers down.  And last years team (destined to lose an opening round NIT game) had two guys leave for the NBA and one play in the development league if I'm not mistaken.  Beyond Morgan, I'm not sure if we have any other players that would start on many other B10 teams.

Honestly Archie is probably beating himself he isn’t succeeding this year. Archie could have a team of D3 caliber players and would want to succeed. Remember Crean constantly made excuses and threw his team under the bus. Archie knows this teams limitations but at the same time he’s faced adversity at Dayton multiple times and still had stellar results. But I agree in 2 years Archie will make sure his priniciples are being applied. And 2 years if someone makes a bonehead move honestly he’ll have the depth to say hit the end of the bench if you don’t want to play my way.

I think Archie is better than our last 3 coaches. I really do. I'm not sure any coach can win with this collection of misfits.

Sadly Morgan's year and talents will go wasted. He's playing incredible. Wish we could surround him with a winner next season. He deserves it.

It’s not Archie’s fault that IU has sucked for 25 years. I understand wanting to win now, but accept the reality of the situation and enjoy the games. I truly didn’t care that we lost. I’m more into why are we losing and what can be done to fix it. To me we need some grad transfers/Juco’s and to give some handshakes at the end of the season. To me Archie is trying to make lemonade out of lemons.

Tonight's game was frustrating as all can be, mostly because I didn't see a strategy to end the madness when we were committing fouls on every play for 15 minutes straight or not scoring a bucket for 6-7 minute periods or not getting the ball into Morgan for like 8 minutes straight etc.

Losses happen but I want to look over at the bench and see our coach and know we have a few extra points/possessions/stops and I don't know that I do

I doubt Crean would. Hell he lost to IPFW with a superior team. He always lost to Wisconsin. Crean needs shooters to have a prayer and we clearly do not have that.

Honestly I liked the way Green was playing for a bit, especially the first half. He made some good passes, played great defense and ran the offense. Then the second half happened... If we get first half Green the rest of the way we will have something. But the second half Green is a transfer candidate.
