2018 General Recruiting Thread

Garland. We need a PG in the worst way, and we'll struggle next year if we don't have a contributor. Garland isn't a one and done like Romeo either. I get the pull of Romeo being an in-state top 5 player, but we can live without him. Anderson and Hunter can both play a little bit of SG. We don't have anyone on the roster for next year that is a pure PG.

I agree that we need a solid PG, but I'm not so sure we don't already have a pure PG on roster. Green and Durham are both PGs, and I think with an improved jumper and a little brawn Durham can be exactly what we need. I really think he's going to surprise a lot of people this season. The main case for Romeo is that he is a generational player and the biggest in-state talent in recent memory. He's the kind of player that can turn heads and draw interest to IU for future recruits. Despite the fact that he's likely OAD, Archie will be lauded for luring him, and can use use him as an example of successful NBA talents he's coached and made ready for the league. Just my two cents.

What about Durham

I think most people forget that you need a really good floor general to make it anywhere in the tourney. Garland is exactly that. I'd rather have a pure PG that's ready to contribute from day 1, rather than "molding" someone like Durham and Green.

However, both Green and Durham will have an entire year of "molding" at the collegiate level before Garland even graduates, so they could very well be ready to take the helm by the time the 2018 class comes around.

I would be much more satisfied with RP and Romeo than a class including Garland and a high level 4 star SG.

Romeo over Garland for me too.

1. Best player in state.  Statement made in recruiting.

If they were both out of state recruits i'd be apt to say Garland because he is more likely to be a 2-3 year player than Romeo.

For us to demonstrate we can take the states best, succeed in the court, and get them to the NBA in the end even (especially) if it's after one year that will aid our recruiting efforts going forward.

That's essentially the point I was trying to make. Langford's recruitment is about so much more than just him as an individual player. It's a statement to future recruits in the state and programs who have been farming our recruits essentially unchecked for too long, and it puts us back on the map as a perennial powerhouse with regards to regional recruiting.

Yes! Because both scenarios would be fantastic and would set IUBB up for consistent, high-level success, but with Romeo and Robert, that success would be built with in-state connections and would continue to foster those connections going forward.

Precisely.

All the discussion about Garland may well be over by 6:15 this evening.  Who knows?

Honestly I won't be devastated. He's seemed to be uninterested in IU lately. If we're not for him, then so be it. Next man up.

Green is a true PG

If we don't land a top flight PG in 2018 I would go with Green. We could still pickup a backup PG though. I really feel, with an offseason and sophomore year under CAM, that Green could run the show next season. He seems to have that IT factor that many don't. He had better vision and ability to get the pass on target than any other guard. He needs some time running the team and increase his quickness to get by his defender.

Oh I still want a PG in 2018. But to say we don't have a PG on our roster is false.

Totally agree. It's a statement about where we're at as a program with the new regime in place. Plus, the dude is unreal. I got sucked into watching his YouTube clips the other night and he's incredible. The game where he lit up La Lumiere for 40 and destroyed Brian Bowen (I think that's who it was) had me gitty. Gotta get him. We'll be just fine without him, IMO, but man we could really be back on the map with his services.
