Player and Recruit Retention News/Discussion & Potential Transfers

OG is projected #15th in the latest mock draft from DraftExpress. DraftExpress is usually the most informed through scouts and such.

I wish OG was coming back--he was the X factor in my book and we only got to see glimpses of what he could do --barely scratched the surface on his talents. But--I can't fault him if he is projected to go that high in the draft. Man-- if he decided to come back this site would go right to defcon 5--pure meltdown mode!

Yup. It's a fact. He is moving on. A decision based more on health than love for the game.

Wow, some of you all need to learn the definition of "FACT".   Or maybe the diference between "Opinion based on sources" and "Fact."

So glad Hartman is back.  Selfishly though, I was hoping Archie would have the exact same team Crean had last year for equal comparison, but I as a lifelong Hoosier, I am thrilled Hartman is returning!!!  He has been one of my favorites since his freshman year!

Bad thing is, someone has to go for the 1 committed incoming freshman to join the team and now that Hartman is back, it starts to get a little dicier. Still have plenty of question marks as who could go and who could stay but seems like all 13 members theoretically could return and what that does to our lone committed incoming player, remains to be seen.  Let alone the other 2 previously signed recruits and anyone wanting to transfer in this year.

So Far:

Staying:

  1. Davis - Confirmed by Father (1)
  2. Newkirk - Confirmed by Father (2)
  3. Hartman - Confirmed by Himself through video release. (3)
  4. Morgan (Confirmed) (4)

Believed to be Staying:

  1. McSwain (Have not seen this confirmed yet, but rumored to be back) (5)

Remaining Questions:

  1. Blackmon Jr.  - Declared for Draft but no agent, still could return. (6)
  2. OG - Middle 1st round draft projection, no information yet. (7)
  3. Bryant - 2nd round draft projection, no information yet (8)
  4. Rojo - No information yet (9)
  5. Green - No information yet (10)
  6. Cujo - No information yet (11)
  7. Gelan - No information yet (12)
  8. Priller - No information yet (13)

Incoming Players:

  1. Justin Smith (14)

Potential Incoming Players:

  1. Al Durham (15)
  2. Clifton Moore (16)

Others:

  1. McKinley Wright
  2. Mark Smith
  3. Jordan Tucker
  4. Mohammed Bamba
  5. Matur Maker

Let's say Thomas goes.  That makes us pretty shallow at the 5.

We have a ton of guards, but no pure PG after Newkirk graduates.  Some definite holes.

Al Durham is still pretty heavily involved in all things IU on Instagram.  I really think that after Justin Smith, he's going to take the next opening.  That makes the Wright/Smith/Bamba odds look pretty long.

I wouldn't consider Josh a PG at all. I think Green has shown better potential as a true PG than Josh. With Archie as the head man now, I'm interested in seeing how Josh can develop into a PG.

That being said, we are guard heavy. Getting Collin back is crucial for our front court depth. I think we'll have to move Freddie to the front court. He can't dribble the ball at all nor can he shoot it. We just need him to be that grinder crashing the boards and setting nasty screens.

Josh / Green /

Rojo / Jones

James / Smith

Collin / Morgan / Freddie

Bryant / Davis

Non Rotational: Gelon / Priller

I'm not actually in the workouts, but do take interest in the information provided from the team.  From what I see, I have to disagree with you.  Those sand box workouts are an excellent way to strengthen all the ligaments and supporting muscles in your legs specifically to prevent injury.  It gets them off the hardwood and out of their shoes, which provides more wear and more restriction on their movement.  The sandbox stuff is really state-of-the-art stuff.

They also do a lot of olympic weightlifting workouts, which--properly taught--are crucial to overall health.  For example, a well coached squat (a$$ to grass) and deadlifts will make everything stronger, including knees, and make for a strong posterior chain (hamstrings, basically everything along the backside).  This makes the strength more balanced and prevents the most common injuries.  Combine in cleans/******/jumps and you get more explosive power coming from the hips.

I know it seems like we get a lot of blown knees, but I really think this is a time that correlation does not imply causation.  I'm not a huge fan of Lyonel Anderson's sideline antics, but I do think he does a very good job conditioning the team.

One thing to keep in mind: Just say that your "Believed to be Staying" and "Remaining Questions" all decide to stay. It's very unlikely (guessing OG doesn't return), but still, if that were to happen -- that means there are no incoming players or potential incoming players or others, because you're at your limit of scholarships. Crean had three players signed (two obviously have backed out), but technically, there were no spots open (with Hartman having remaining eligibility). I have a feeling early on, Crean was banking/planning on JBJ, OG and Bryant not being back -- and that Hartman would move on, too. Man, recruiting is a tricky business and juggling act!

While it does seem that way, I suspect we may be a bit hyper-aware of our own team and ignoring that other teams have injuries too.

Back in the late 70's and early 80's we had a bunch of guys that had their careers hampered or eliminated by knee injuries (Grunwald, Oliphant, Pat Graham, etc.).  We also had what seemed to be an extraordinarily high number of back injuries (Woodson as you are aware, Kitchel, and I believe there was another player) - but maybe that was just because it affected important players - just like we've recently seen with OG and Mo Creek.

At least the surgical treatment are far more advanced today than they were back in the 80's.

Phinisee, Jallow, Langford, Anderson, Hunter.

Need at least two of 'em.

If Miller can recruit Indiana better than Crean did the last few classes Phinese and Jallow should be locks to go to IU in my opinion

I really want Phinisee. If we don't get Jallow something went wrong. He's in our backyard.

Some kids want to get out of their backyard. Not implying I have any inside info; just want us to have reasonable expectations.

Damezi Anderson wants to stay in B1G country, FYI.
