Blackmon wouldn't play for Knight. That defense issue and the type of shots he takes would not endear him to Knight.

idk, guys like Alford didn't play great D for knight either. Blackmon would have likely been used in an Alford way coming off screens for jump shots and playing avg defense.

Could you imagine Blackmon in a Knight-like offensive scheme?  Top 10 all-time IU scorer, imo. 

No knight would have him on the bench for his defense.

It's not a totally ridiculous thought. Izzo, Beilein, Roy Williams, Mark Few, and Mick Cronin all coached HS, and that's just off the top of my head. Bo Ryan was D3 coach that adapted pretty well and pretty quickly. Yes, they all had intermediate stops for experience along the way, but right now some people have seen enough of Crean that the risk/ reward has veered heavily to the risk side. Having watched the same 9 years that they have, I can't fault them for that. Not a route I'd personally choose, but it's a reality of where we are right now. 

Eyeball test doesn't lie.   Lots of guys here know what they're seeing; and anybody who's coached at the high school level can easily teach the game the way Crean's teams play.  It's just not that hard; and the half court offense struggles to find decent looks on a consistent basis.   You can teach a fat kid in flip flops to move.   The comments are indeed hyperbole.  Just a line that says "Crean's offense is embarrassingly easy, and we don't guard, anyway."

Same was true under Davis.  I went to a game v Notre Dame one time, and they played a very simple 2-3 zone.  We lost 46-45.  Our offense was to flash a guy to the high post and look to kick opposite.   The problem?  The guy at the high post kept his back to the rim, and never ONCE turned to look at the baseline, and we had guys open down there all night.   But....we never looked, ND never really allowed our offense to do much; and we scored 45 points in a loss that any decent high school coach could have avoided with the simplest of adjustments.   Basketball is a very simple game.  Crean teaches spacing well.  He teaches tempo well.  But there are so many little things that seem to get missed, and talent has masked a lot of his deficiency, along with weak scheduling.

Agreed, but I was only referring to the offensive side of the ball...and not necessarily under a Knight coached team.

It's not just teaching guys how to set screens, it's also teaching guys how to come off of screens.

OG was ok Juwan did nothing on that play. Phantom screen then ran to an open spot. That is our offense for the most part.

Either they really messed up the spacing on those screens (OG/JBJ side) or the draw up of that play is horrible... Is it in the Players or the Coach?

However the Screen on the left side (Rob/Juwan) looked pretty well executed.

I asked him about 2 weeks ago if he thought crean survived the season. He said yes at first, saying he has deep ties to the right people.

He then wrote me today and said he may have been wrong and that talk has begun.

Set play out of a secondary break.  I have consistently said Crean's secondary break is pretty solid (I know this was out of a dead ball, but still a similar scenario).  It's the ha;f court offense that doesn't move.   Not any given set play.

Several of my IU friends have been talking about him as a possible replacement. I gotta admit he gets his teams to play with grit/determination. They arent mentally weak and frenetic. Plays a style that is valued in this state. A definite upgrade.

Does anyone remember last year when Dakich said people "would be shocked to learn of the coaches who would consider coaching IU" if given the chance?  Shocked in a good way, because he said these coaches have won titles, are established at other schools, or have proven themselves to be the best at their level.

He went on to say how he knows this because he talks to these coaches quite frequently, and/or knows people close to them.  I remember when he was talking about this on air, coming to the conclusion that Bill Self was one of the guys he was referring to.  I know that's the definition of a long shot, but you never know when someone feels ready to take on a new challenge.

Anyway, has me excited and optimistic if we do make a change.

the list is short of who wouldn't take the job. Those concerned we can't do better need not worry.

Honestly, id love Bill self and IU has better tools than Kansas. Kansas has no recruiting base, they must go national. IU has one of the best receuiting grounds in the country on its doorstep. So if your conclusion is correct, I wouldnt be shocked.

Very true.  His salary (which is interesting in its makeup) is just over $3M/year.  IU and BTN money could throw $5M at him if we're serious about trying to sway him.

Also factor in the stability of each school's respective conference.  The B1G is obviously improving and not going anywhere, while the Big 12 is losing members and in a state of flux.  It's entirely possible that he may get tired of winning the Big 12 every year, maybe it has lost its luster after the last 12 times.  

Still think it's the longest of long shots, but who knows.  He may be ready for an entirely new challenge, kind of like Roy Williams.
