TOM CREAN FIRED

Recommended Posts

What's weird with Steve's team this year is it statistically matched up close with our 11-12 team. We were 4-AO and 74-AD. They are 3-AO and 82-AD. Should be interesting to see where they end up. Statistically everything else was pretty similar too. To this point his best teams were at New Mexico. Yes he had two top 20 AD (For those discussing Crean not having a top 20 AD he was 21 come on). His years in New Mexico where he was top 20 he had an offense that was top 50ish. That is a team that should make a decent run. I don't see his team (taking coaching out of it) as more than a Sweet 16 team. Their stats are the type of team that can get knocked off early.

I want a COACH. Someone that doesn't need 3 5 stars on their team to win. Someone that when you look at them on the sideline, you know you'll have a chance regardless who's on the floor. Someone who can get the most out of their guys on D. This is not Crean, and not Alford.

We fired him !

UNC won the title in 09 and were ranked 21st.

But still...saying that Crean hasn't had a championship level defense is still false lol. I'm not saying Crean is a good defensive coach, just pointing out that he's been there before when it was said he hasn't been. (This paragraph wasn't to you but I don't want to double post lol)

Gotcha. 21st one year is bot the same as 21st another year, whoch has been my point  just saying well Crean was 21st and so was UNC, doesnt tell the story. UNC statistically was better. That IU team was a very good team but their defense was statistically a step behind most championship defenses and slightly worse than the worst champion.

Crean hasnt had a championship level defense since his Marquette days. Which begs the question why? I feel the game has evolved and he hasnt evolved with it on the defensive side. Even will the incredibly easy out of conference schedule, his teams at IU havent sniffed the level his best Marquette team did.

Just looking at Pomeroy's top 20/20 rule for picking a champion we are looking at Nova, Gonzaga, Kentucky, and Wichita St. impressive for Mr. Marshall. I don't think he would have the horses obviously, but it isn't easy to be top 20/20.

Been talking to that BTownInsider fellow over at 247. According to him the snag with Donovan are timing and bonus details. Said everything else will be hammered out and fully believes Donovan will be the coach

Whats the timing issue? As long as he is willing to come this year, make it happen. Just have him sign the dotted line, so its locked in. On the money side, give him the bonuses. If he makes his bonuses, then the boosters will be happy amd make up any difference.

Yeah he was an Indiana kid that got recruited by Indiana. I am positive he is not talking out his @SS when he says he will TRY to lock up the state. I really like what he would bring to recruiting.

Let me also go on record as saying I like about 3-4 coaches ahead of him.

Oh yeah me too man. I would take Billy, Bennett, White though he is kinda wearing off on me and one of the Miller bros. I would put Alford, Collins and Marshall together with Alford and Collins ahead of Marshall. The thing I like about Alford is he gets his guys quick and then fills out the roster later usually the time were finding our studs. Recruiting would be less stressful with him. If he could bring his whole class and Aaron Holiday or Ike I would be sold lol. I love those two kids but Ike is very raw. Holiday is scrappy. Kind of kid that you need to win.

Marshall has had it several times. The catch, in my mind, is difference makers. Hard to have them at a midmajor, which is why you dont see a midmajor national champion. But this is the number one reason I want Marshall at IU. He has the ultimate resume. 20 conference/con tourny championships, NIT champ, final four. Conistantly in his conference top 3, even when he doesnt win it. Give him the keys to the car and enjoy the ride.

I haven't been a fan, but that is impressive mid-major or not.

A different poster over there, who also said they never have info FWIW, said they heard that Donovan wanted to wait until after NBA season and IU wanted him for the  April recruiting period.

If he wants to join after his season ended, I'd counter with he can if he assembles his staff so they can get started using until he is finished.

Yeah, ask him who his top assistant will be. Hire them and let that oerson do the scouting for the spring. Talk with the current players and recruits. Hit reruiting hard in July. I see no issue here.

Interesting.  It's funny how we were getting info about Donovan's interest and there being a meeting, but suddenly it was "a no-go" - then a day or two later word was leaking that talks weren't completely broken off.  That was followed by others (including Hutch) saying we were looking at BD.  It crossed my mind that things might actually be more positive than the insiders were reporting and that they were basically relaying "smokescreen" info.

I also wondered about the timing.  Donovan might not be able to take the reins until April or later, but he'd probably be able to convince current players to stay rather than transfer.  Also, since we don't have a lot of openings, delaying recruiting may not be a large impact.

Exactly. Marshall is the best basketball coach being mentioned. The returning roster (w/out Bryant, OG and JBJ) would probably be the most talented team he has ever coached.

I became a Marshall fan years ago. Try to catch WSU games when I can. The man has the Xs and Os. Give him a team full of 4 star players and an occasional 5 star and we hang multiple banners. To me Marshall is the 2nd best coach in college basketball, behind only K.

If he wants to come to Indiana than he knows how important the April recruiting period is and wouldn't want to miss it. That's why I don't really buy that narrative.

Is the April period that important? Seems thats where you identify targets and then focus on those in July. For a 2x national champion, you skip the April period and get the contract signed.

How important is it though?

April recruiting period is for not next season but the 1 after it correct? A coach with the name recognition of BD with HS kids would be able to make a lot of moves in the later recruiting periods I would argue.
