Eh, he didn't walk into anything close to the situation Crean walked into....... don't really get where the broken comment from Fleek was coming from

I want a COACH. Someone that doesn't need 3 5 stars on their team to win. Someone that when you look at them on the sideline, you know you'll have a chance regardless who's on the floor. Someone who can get the most out of their guys on D. This is not Crean, and not Alford.

I think people really underestimate how rare a coach like this is. For the most part they're either old or in the NBA.

Must be in the minority but I am ready to see literally anyone but Tom boner roaming the sideline at IU next year.

But not if we're saying the same thing about "xyz" 3 years from now.

Marshall, Bennett, Donovan. All 3 fit that criteria at the moment and we have a shot with all of them. I think to a certain extent, the Miller brothers fit this criteria as well.

This is what makes someone like Holtman a better choice

I really don't get what people see in Alford.  If he didn't play at IU I really don't think anyone would want him.

If Alford is an improvement over Crean, and I still say he's not, then Gregg Marshall is an absolutely undeniable improvement.

He is done my list as well but here are the positives.

Started coaching at Manchester where and turned that program around right away. At that level it is not as much about recruiting success as coaching. He took them to a national championship game I think.

Then moved up to SWMS and built them up as well getting to a sweet sixteen. This propelled him to Iowa.

At Iowa things started well and he had some BTT tourney success early on but the wheels fell off. Coaches before and after him at Iowa have had more success than he did so the problems there had a lot to do with him. Add to that the PP situation and Iowa is a blemish.

Then to the Lobos and once again he builds them up to a strong program. Even entered the tournament as a 3 seed only to fall short.

Then once again he moves up, this time to UCLA and has not had blue blood success but has had 2 sweet sixteens in 3 years and are liking strong this year.

If you discount Iowa (not easy to do) as being too much too early like Belchek at Cleveland then the rest of his time does show some things to consider. 4 rebuilds. Sweet sixteens at several schools. What hurts him is Iowa for sure and not staying somewhere long enough to build beyond a sweet sixteen run.

Wishful thinking but maybe the "but" at the end of Janitor's post has significance--as in maybe Janitor thought Alford "but" ---now Donovan wants to come!

He later said it was a typo and meant to put #iubb not #iu but

We had a championship caliber offense/defense in 12-13. (#2/21)

That 21 ranked defense was statistically worse than the UNC team that won it. Crean has never had a defense better or as good as the worst team to win it all, while at Indiana.

This is wrong. Alford has assembled teams that had EITHER a championship level offense or defense, never both. Crean has assembled one team with both while at Indiana. http://kenpom.com/index.php?y=2013

I wasnt implying he has done both in the same year. Just that he has done both. No Crean hasnt. Your example is a defense still inferior to the UNC team that was the lowest ranked to win it all. Crean got close but didnt do it.

Feel free to bend the stats how you want, but it's commonly known that no one has been above 30 in KenPom and won a title. You said we never have had that championship caliber. We have.

Edit: Villanova's adjusted offense was worse than UNC's last year. Does that mean they share the championship?

Because his half court offense and defense are better. And he's a better recruiter. I'd still rather have someone else. I just don't HATE the idea of Alford.

How is his defense better? His adjusted defenses are on par with Crean.

Let's say that it is in fact Donovan who will be our next coach. Would that mean we wouldn't find out until later down the road after he finishes the playoffs with the Thunder? Or would that not matter and we find out just as soon as any other candidate? You may think that if it does indeed take a while for a new coach announcement to be made, that it might be safe to assume that it could be Donovan just for the fact that we are waiting on him to be done with his NBA season....or that could not matter at all and we find out whether it's him just as soon as any other candidate. Curious as to how that would play out.

This is a great question. Does anyone have an answer? What happened the last time an NBA coach was not fired and moved back to college basketball? What was the timeline?

Actually the worst team to win it all was UNC, they were 21st. This isnt bending stats. That UNC defense is better than anything Crean put out. Again, facts. Crean got close 1 time but still wasnt good enough. Alford while hasnt pht it together for both in a season has had both defenses that were championship caliber and offenses that were championship caliber
