TOM CREAN FIRED

Recommended Posts

That is fine. Like I said previously I really don't care, but is it that crazy an assistant coach would come here for a year with the exposure of IU being he is an IU great that could lead to a bigger job? Or he becomes Associate Head Coach here and makes more money than he is now. I promise you the adminstration is not going to just pick a guy again. They are actually very comfortable in keeping Crean or hiring Fife for one year to get Donovan and they would be crazy not to. You would rather grab another guy knowing next year the talent isn't as good as the reason to get them instead of Billy Donovan than your opinion doesn't matter one bit too me.

It makes zero sense for Fife to agree to come in for one year only to be relegated to associate head coach. He's an assistant for an elite program as it is - it makes see sense: If Donavan was interested in IU he'd come now and it'd not one year from now.

Trying to promote fair and balanced ideas. If you don't like Tom Crean then name your immediate replacement? And his contract value? Eagerly await your response.

In case you forgot, this is the FIRE Tom Crean thread, not the promote fair and balanced ideas thread.....

I know people hate Alford here, and I'm alright with that (for moral:re Iowa) but I think he would be a much better candidate than he is given credit for.

UCLA is in contention to win it all this year. Will they, probably not but they will be right there. Recruiting is on fire. I don't see any reason why he'd want to leave but I wouldn't be mad with that move. I think we could get top 5 recruiting classes and be in the mix each year with him.

Don't hate me all at once.

Alford's current buyout is almost $8 Mil, on top of Crean's $4. I know people say "the buyout doesn't matter" but the 2 together might. If not, then IU should've bought out Crean 2 years ago and gone after Billy D before he left Gator-town for the Dust Bowl.

Oh I like good basketball more than you will ever know. Indiana needs more global, forward thinking on sports. The MidWestern way is not any better, morally, or otherwise, on how sports are played or coaches are selected. Thinking to the contrary hurts Indiana's ability to recruit coaches. Hence no IUBB national championships in 30 years.

Yes the timing is TERRIBLE for Alford. I think he'd be crazy to leave what he has going as well.

Was just a thought that he is another Coach that could do big things at IU. I know most here thinks he stinks but he is one I disagree about.

Change a few words and you could say the same about Crean.  He can't convince players to stay in their own backyards at a historic mecca of college basketball I N I A N A, I left out the 'd' because his teams don't play any.

You can replace the 'D' with a bunch of T's since we commit a gazillion turnovers and never use timeouts.

I played basketball in the snow at recess pretending I was Steve Alford (New Castle) in the early 80s. So many IU fans have a hate for him now Im kind of against it. We need to unite behind this next hire.

Just wonder. Could it be our February backside was the result that  Crean already decided he wasn't returning and the players just said "forget it". Therefore little energy and probably some apathy and depression in SOME players part?  Has OG been in the bench lately? I think Priller played last night because it was his last chance to play in assembly hall. He's gone I think.

Back on topic. I swear to god if the Billy Donovan talk died down because we were to cheap to pay him then I am going to just burn all my IU apparel and refuse to replace it till Glass gets canned.

I would go higher than that. He doesn't get to pick his budget. He just gets to make sure he stays within it. The admin better pony up.

I'll openly admit to being hopeful BUT pessimistic about this (hypothetical) hire.

I think after the last 15 years IU's "brand" has been sufficiently weakened that it desperately needs a home-run hire that gives it instant credibility, i.e., Stevens, Donovan or maybe S. Miller.

What I expect, if this hire actually happens, is someone like Archie or Holtmann--both of whom may one day be HOF coaches for all I know, but may not currently have enough clout to step in and immediately turn things around. Which is what the basketball program needs ASAP in my opinion.

Not sure this program can absorb yet another 3- or 4-year "rebuild" at this point in time. It would be better (if even possible, which it may not be) if the next hire brought someone who could immediately put IU in contention for the Romeo Langfords and Keion Brooks of the world.

Seth Greenberg can't coach either.

The injury crap is silly.

Ask Izzo who is piecing together a decent season after being demolished with injuries and a super young team.

While playing a tough ass schedule. They didn't win many during the early season, but prepared them for conference.
