TOM CREAN FIRED

Recommended Posts

They're playing nice and being politically correct. It reminds me of the bozos who constantly talked about how Matt Painter was signing knockout classes after the Baby Boilers when he was really getting 2 and 3 star recruits who would go on to give them nothing. The writers depend on Crean for interviews/quotes and aren't going to say anything that might upset him.

I think there are some that look at our schedule and see a bunch of Ws on it. Realistically this is probably the easiest conference schedule IU has had, maybe ever. Only play the 3 best teams a total of 3 times, 2 in Bloomington. if he gets the team playing mediocre defense, they make the dance is probably what they are thinking.

My money is on a February nosedive per Creans coaching consistencies. We may miss the NCAA tournament and that would put everyone out of their misery. If we make the dance and get knocked out early I can see a change being made.

I can actually see Crean doing what Buzz Williams did and jump to another power 5 team before the hammer hits.

Yeah that schedule is as easy as it gets in the B1G. At MSU is our only game we won't be either favored or a coin flip. They think he does enough to make tourney.

I'm just not sure making the dance saves him. I think he has to do something great to be safe. To me that means win the conference or make a deep run in the tourney. The schedule is set up to give him a great opportunity. If he fails it's his own fault.

I agree. I do think we will see more fluff pieces during the year and if we end up with a good win - loss record (even if as fans we know we have played well below expectations and talent) i would not be surprised to see some pushing him for coach of the year awards. They will look at how we struggled early and on neutral courts and assume our later wins against less competition and at home will reflect great coaching.

You guys are starting to sound really depressing!!!!

I thought it was basically a done deal, and now all this talk about potentially still having the same coach next season?????

MAKE THE TOURNEY.... Oh please don't let that be any type of measuring stick....

I think we were just going off the Seth Davis comment about being back next season. I think it's basically impossible to fire him if he wins the league. That would be 2 Big Ten titles in 4 seasons.

I would speculatively generalize that either 13 B1G wins and Sweet Sixteen, 11 B1G wins and Elite Eight, or 9 B1G wins and Final Four will save CTC's job.

I hope this is close to where Glass is.

I sure hope not.... I could very easily see us end up with 13 BIG wins (including 1 in the BTT) and a Sweet 16 exit.... Based on our schedule.

To me that is not nearly enough to save his job. I hope Glass is nowhere near that lenient...

16 BIG Wins (20-21 possible) and Elite 8 (even Sweet 16 depending on Matchups) and I could see him getting another year.... *** not that I would condone it.

Glass better be at the point where it's Elite 8 or bust. Regular season wins really shouldn't be a part of his formula at this point. Win when it matters, or move along.

For the sake of discussion I would ask this then, would you be okay with 18-13, slipping in as a bubble team, then getting hot and going on a run to the Elite 8?

With the nature of the NCAA tournament, I think black and white statements of what has to happen for a coach to be retained or let go is kind of a tricky exercise.  Johnny Dawkins was on the hot seat until a sweet 16 run as a 10 seed.  He promptly went back to the NIT.  If not for that two week stretch he might have been fired already.

I have no idea what the perfect formula is, but I think there has to be some sort of combination of regular season performance and post season results.  I think Stuhoo was on the right track with his formula earlier in the thread.

If 18 - 13 is our record and we miraculously make the Big Dance as a bubble team, the prospects of this team going to the Elite 8, are about as likely as Bob Knight returning as head coach IMO.  I don't think this team can get 'up' for a series of hard games and that's what really worries me about the B1G.  Yes, our schedule looks very favorable but every team that comes into Assembly Hall this year is going to come in feeling confident they can knock us off.  We have no aura of invincibility that was once a hallmark of our program when playing at home.  And, we're not a particularly strong road warrior.  Based on what we've seen early in the season at  Maui and at Duke and our historical record of late season swoon, my optimism for the season as a whole has plummeted.
