IU Candidate: Billy Donovan (OKC Thunder)

Recommended Posts

As much as I want Donovan (he'd be right behind Stevens on a wish list), I doubt it would happen.  I fully expect the administration to make a head scratching hire if Crean gets the boot.

I dont think Miller,Collins or Holtman for that matter would be head scratchers. All up and coming and 7000 times more fundamental than our current coach. We dont have to throw the bank at them but give them decent contracts and see what happens.I would be happy with any of the three.Donovan whould be great but I think its a longshot.

Billy would be a great catch, but what happens when Pitino, K, Williams, Calipari, retire? As much as it pains me to say, those programs are already in a much better place than ours. No rebuilding necessary, recruits in the pipeline, "blue blood" programs, name recognition. One would think he would either jump ship for one of those schools or hold out in the NBA until one comes open.

As much as the BD ride would be great, it would be short lived and we'd be back to square one.

I don't think there'd be much rebuilding here with a hire that Donovan, if it were to happen.  The infrastructure is already in place and his name would bring a jolt of credibility from the get go.

1 year rebuild with BD at most, imo. He would recruit well enough in the 2018 class to make us competitive the next year.

Wow this is the most negative post ever lol. If he takes the job and is being successful then he isn't going to leave for one of those schools. Now he may hold out in the nba but lets hope he wants to be king of Indiana and takes the job. Think how big crean could have been if he was successful. Look how big of jerk bob knight was and he is a legend with tons of supporters. If you come to indiana and win at an elite level then you wont want to leave because you are on top of college basketball world imo

That's true, but let's call a duck a duck. From what we have leaving (potentially) and what we have coming in, it's nothing to write home about. We would struggle for at least 2 years until he was able to get on the recruiting trails and play catch up with all of the big dogs. High school kids being recruited aren't waiting for a better coach at IU.

Messy break ups are usually the only time a school gets really worse. UK & us for example. Other than that the major jobs have been held so long you just expect them to stay. Coach K and Cal is probably the closest to leaving. Self and Roy have 10 good years. Coach K probably has 5 and Cal could be any day with the NBA and him always saying he wants to be done around 5 years but did he mean college or altogether. Billy comes here I don't see him leaving honestly if things go like we expect. IU would be looked at the same as those schools. We probably have a banner and the school would match any offer. If it does happen I think we would be able to get almost anyone we wanted so. I truly think Duke or UK would be the only schools he actually wants. Mike White probably goes to Duke as well.

I think it is a fair point in that K and Roy are leaving soon, so BD may chill in OKC for a few more years.  THAT SAID, IU is tied with both programs for national championships with 5.  I would think BD would enjoy the opportunity to step in and be a savior for a proud program with rich history.

I don't see that much of a struggle, in all honesty.  His name would open doors pretty quickly and the name Indiana would help him out too, don't kid yourself Crean benefited from the Indiana name.

The top coaches don't need a real long time to turn something around.  Recent success is the only thing the likes of Duke and pUKe have over IU.

When you say "struggle," does that mean a 5-13 B1G record? Because I think he would do better than that with our talent. A lot better.

Yep plus a lot of 2017 talent is going to come back into play.

What we have most likely coming back/in next year, we would be competitive with Donovan next season. One of the only reasons next year is going to be bad is because Crean will be the ones coaching them. That should still be a fairly talented roster. Not B1G/NCAA contenders, but that'd be a tournament team. Then yeah the sky's the limit 2018 and beyond.

I'm not saying I wouldn't love him to take over. I think BD would be a great fit, but I think we could have a better long term option out there.

Not trying to be a Debbie Downer or Negative Nancy...I'm just being a realist. Kids being recruited have never seen IU go past the Sweet 16. They've seen UK, Duke, UNC, UofL win titles.

By "struggle" I mean we would probably miss March again next year. With or without Billy.

Better long term option?  Short of finding the fountain of youth and kidnapping coach K I don't think you are right

UNC could have sanctions coming. Cal has left every school with sanctions right? Louisville is not a concern to me. Duke maybe but why follow a legend vs building yourself into a legend here where we are a long time removed from a legend

Better long term? Someone who doesn't have the clout like Billy. Archie, Gregg Marshall, Mark Few, Kenny Johnson if we could steal him back from UofL.

None of those schools are going to see any sanctions. They are the $ for the NCAA

Louisville should be a concern. They are going to make another deep run and BD would have an immediate "in" because of Pitino
