Tim Priller Interview

djsalway
  • Let me preface this interview by saying that Tim was one of the most humble guys I’ve talked to. He seemed very humbled by his commitment over the weekend and willing to work hard in order to gain respect and playing time. Although he isn’t familiar with the program yet, I can see him becoming a nice four-year player for our Hoosiers.

Question: First off, how much did the Indiana offer mean to you? What made you choose Indiana over the other schools recruiting you?

Answer: It meant a lot, it's a great opportunity, and is a very successful school in terms of basketball and education.

Q: How meaningful is it to come back to the state of Indiana to play basketball, especially with the history of IU and the basketball-crazy fan base?

A: I was only born there, not raised there, but given the history and fan base, it means a lot. I'm a very humble person.

Q: What would you consider your strengths, as both a basketball player and a teammate?

A: I can score the ball, I'm a team player first, I want to win by all means and will do whatever it takes to win, and my IQ for Basketball is high. I can set good, solid screens, talk on defense, and get my teammates the ball.

Q: What part of your game needs the most work before the season starts in November?

A: Getting stronger. Once I'm stronger I'll be fine, and I could be more aggressive on rebounding.

Q: What parts of your game do you see fitting well in Coach Crean’s system? Are you familiar with it?

A: Not very familiar with it but from what I'm hearing it sounds like bigs that can shoot well and are more skilled, but we haven't really talked about that yet.

Q: What do you believe you can contribute to the program in your Freshman season?

A: I think I can contribute by working hard, having a good winning mentality. I’m definitely a positive player. No minutes have been promised, but I'm going to work as hard as I can to try and earn those minutes. And if I play, I can score, and once I get stronger I'll be able to score, rebound, and play defense.

Q: What does it mean to you to be a Hoosier and have the opportunity to wear the Cream and Crimson?

A: It means a lot, Indiana is a huge school and seems to have many good people. I'm very excited to be a Hoosier and can't wait.

Q: Will you be visiting Bloomington before the summer? If so, when?

A: Yes, hopefully sometime in the next week and a half.

Q: Have you spoken to any of the other commits for Indiana’s 2014 class? What are your thoughts on the incoming recruits?

A: I've texted Max and told him there is a lot of haters out there and let's prove them wrong and let's do big things at Indiana. I think I'll fit in well with the rest of the guys.

Q: To finish up with a bit of a fun question, do you have a specific nickname you would like Hoosier Nation to call you by?

A: I've never really had a nickname but I've been seeing on Twitter people saying "thrilla prilla" or “thriller priller," but it doesn't really matter to me, if the fans want a nickname for me they can make it!

Q: Do you have a number you want to wear, or does that not matter either?

A: I'm not a selfish person and not the type to put myself first, any number would be fine with me. It’s not about me or my number. It's about the team and winning games and winning a NCAA championship.

I'm pretty high on Max! I think he has an "it" factor and a confidence, and being a 6'8" shooter helps too! Not sure if you saw some of his video interviews during the Derby Festival, but I was really impressed. Something about him saying "oh, I'm going to win it" when asked about the 3-pt shooting contest, and the. Going out and doing it.

I don't know what he'll contribute next season, but I think we'll really like Max over the course of his career.

I am hoping that between him and Max, one of them can show enough strength and court awareness to be able to hold their own on the defensive end of the floor.

Right now, I (and I believe most of us) would speculate that Max is the more likely of our stretch fours to make it into the rotation, but you never know.

This is where I am.  I hope nobody expects him to jump out the gate.  Chances are he won't.  If he works hard, lets see where he is in years 3 and 4.  Not saying he will be a starter, but the way we run through bigs he may be a contributor.  High BBIQ is not something our bigs have had under Crean outside of Zeller.

This is where I am too!

You lost me there, what kind of heat was he catching yesterday? I guess I missed that.

Guys ragging on him for not being the kind of talent that IU should be getting.

Great interview. Tim seems like a high-quality young man in all respects. Glad to have him at IU.

You got it LAZ...  quality is key. Love to see us getting guys who will be successful in life, not just basketball.

(but basketball success would be nice :dancer: )

What I love most is we have a lot of scorers coming in. "Shot makers". Max is confident, Tim too. JB2 is a big time scorer. Rojo too.

That is what we needed this season, we were a JB2 away from being good, really good.

It will be interesting to see how different our offense looks with some "shot makers"

I'm not a shooting coach but some positives in his shot I do see is that when he releases the ball, it's above his head at the highest point (even better since he's 6'9"), his elbow is tucked and pointing right at the basket.  And not sure if this makes sense, but even though he has a hitch, the release is quick.  But again, I'm not a shooting coach though.

He's also got the pick-n-pop down

I like your analysis. I think my favorite part about him is that he ALWAYS follows his shot. Always looking to get the rebound if he ends up missing. Seems like he's willing to hustle.

@peegs: Indiana commit Tim Priller won the 3-point shooting contest tonight that was part of the DFW East/West All-Star game

Straight shooters! You think Crean put a priority on shot makers?????

I think if we would have had a couple of pure shooters this year we would have won a few more games and probably would have made it into the NCAA tournament. Lack of scoring = losing games. Atleast Crean recognised this and is trying to correct the problem.

My apologies to Stuhoo.  This is already covered at this link with additional comments from our members.  Sorry Guys.   My Bad.

DallasNews.com shared several photos of a great day that showed how supportive friends and family are of Tim during his official signing with IU.  The article was good as well:

“It worked out just about as good as I hoped it would,” Richland coach Richard Bacon said.

There’s little doubt that Priller can score. A first-team all-district selection in District 4-5A, the 6-9, 200-pound Priller averaged 18 points and five rebounds for Richland (19-11), shooting 51 percent on 3-pointers.

“The kid can get buckets,” Bacon said. “There’s some other things he needs to work on, but he can really score.”
