Yeah, this has no chance of getting through Congress.  The President appoints the commissioner of a new college sports association?  That won't become political at all. These colleges don't have to fire these coaches and pay that amount of buyouts, but they do it when they know the price.  It isn't like the actual university is actually paying the buyout anyway which this Congressman should know.

Not exactly a vote of confidence is it?

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry just said at a press conference that LSU athletic director Scott Woodward will NOT be hiring LSU’s next football coach. It will be LSU’s Board of Supervisors.

LSU should be looking at cautionary tales from IUBB and other situations like that.  Boards aren’t good at hiring coaches.  Either are most Presidents and donors.  If you don’t trust your AD then you need a new AD.

But this ain’t our problem thankfully!!!

For all the talk about firing coaches and paying buyouts, AD Scott Woodward hired Jimbo Fisher at A&M and Brian Kelly at LSU and was nationally acclaimed because “he always gets his man.” Who has handed out two worse contracts than that?

Maybe this is why Woodward isn't getting to make the next LSU hire.

The only body more incompetent and with a worse track record than the NCAA & it's member schools is the US Congress. Leave it to them to 'help' and screw it up even worse.

The only way this goes away is if the power 4 colleges band together and all agree not to sign these contracts regardless of the coach. Would probably want to get Notre Dame on board as well

An agreement like that is illegal. They'd then get sued for wage fixing. They don't have antitrust exemptions, nor does the NCAA, so they would lose.

I doubt it’s illegal to agree not to off contract but outs. That very different than wage fixing.

They didn't have to fire him and pay that money.  The could've let him finish the year and coach next year to lower it, but they didn't.  Putting that big of a buyout is crazy, but they do it anyway and get stuck with a boat load of cash to pay.  I seriously doubt if the taxpayers are having to pay that money, but I get where the Governor is coming from.  The AD should have his head examined for giving Kelly a 9 year extension in the first place, and I bet he is gone one way or another in a few months.  You don't have the Governor talking like this about you at a yuge state school and survive it.

Based on the massive buyouts under Woodward I totally get why you wouldn't want him to make that decision. But the Governor injecting himself into the situation and running his mouth is horrible. If your doing a committee do it quietly, or fire Woodward and hire a new AD to make that decision. LSU should be the number 1 available job or at least  tied with Florida this cycle. Any big name coach is going to be completely turned off by this clown show. This is next level too many cooks in the kitchen.

I don’t particularly like him, but I think Franklin will make some fanbase really happy. If I’m Va Tech I make him say no 50 times.

Apparently could only say no 49 times. Va Tech Twitter certainly thinks he’s a done deal. Like that fit for both of them.

He’s going to be a pain in the arse for PSU with his recruiting connects in the northeast.

And I cannot imagine that Va Tech with Franklin will have a say in those 38 PSU commits that IU is going after.

I imagine the later Franklin gets hired the better on that front. It won’t matter for some I’m sure, but just depends on the relationships.  Got a feeling VT is gonna put some serious money behind their next football hire.

Doesn't look as if Matt Ruhle will be heading back to State College.

Signed an extension through 2032 ...

Big job openings get some coaches big extensions.

When Tom Allen was fired by IU a $15mm settlement was reached with no “claw back” if he found another job As we know he found 7 figure  jobs at PSU, and then Clemson, and was able to keep all the 15mm and the incremental cash.

It sounds like Franklin is going to Va Tech and getting a large contract. Unlike Allen’s deal, PSU’s payout to Franklin is reduced by whatever he makes at Va Tech.  Bottom line is that PSU owing Franklin 50mm is a good headline but they most likely won’t be paying him much of anything beyond what he is owed for the balance of this season.

I’m just glad he’s staying in conference

Me too.

Nebraska beats Maryland by three, gets killed by Minnesota, beats Northwestern by a TD and Ruhle parlays that into a big extension..LOL.  I realize it was to fend off PSU but I wouldn’t think PSU would have truly wanted to hire him.

I feel 1,000% better about the extension IU put together for Cig.
