@insidethehall: Sure, Ben Howland can coach, but this is a program with no tradition, awful facilities and no fan support.

Alex getting riled up a bit after Herard's commitment to MSU. I feel ya Alex, I feel ya.

Honestly I am not even convinced that Howland can coach that well, to be getting players to go to MSU.  If he was in Miami or USC maybe just because of the scenery.

He made it to 3 straight Final Fours, thats impressive.  He hasn't been to the sweet sixteen since.

nah

I'd say there is less than a 1% chance of boosters paying players. Howland has a very good resume. He's coached a ton of pros as well. The name on the front of the jersey hasn't mattered to elite players EVER. It's the man patrolling the sideline that matters. Nobody was lining up to play for Kentucky under Gillespie and Tubby (during his later years with UK.)

I can understand your having suspicions though. I can understand why a player would want to play for Ben Howland over Tom Crean but I can't, in a million years, understand why a kid would want to play for Howland over a guy like Bill Self.

College recruiting is very shady. That's all. Indiana isn't immune. I don't buy this wanting to play for Howland. Sure that is part of it but there are 50 great coaches out there that can get you to the league. There are many ways to grant "gifts". It's not always as simple as booster cash. Other factors involved. Never trusted UK, BAYLOR, Kansas, O$U, Duke, UNLV, Michigan State (lower budget), countless others.

Too many stories out there for some of them not to be true.

For some recruits in the lower 100. You can't expect to be a one and done, or maybe even two and done unless you have an Oladipo work ethic, So by choosing a school based solely off of the coach and hoping he can take you the NBA is not a very smart move. MSU has a crappy fanbase, bad facilities, not a great location, and not a rich tradition or anything for the school to be excited about, makes for a disappointing basketball team. And the fact that lower Top 100 players expect MSU or a school like MSU as a pit stop to the NBA is ridiculous. These past few weeks have made me HATE Mississippi State.

That's what's bugging me as well. Howland and MSU can get some kids excited no doubt, but winning out over a perennial top dog like Kansas not once, but twice, and in the conversation to lasso multiple more top 100 kids over traditional power Bball schools? Its just not normal.. I'm not saying there's cheating going on at MSU, that's just too knee jerk, but man would I love to know what the **** is coming out of Howland's mouth at these recruits.

I'm confident that we still land Davis, but the taste in my mouth right now is not a sweet one. Was really hoping to land Kegler to plug the hole Troy will likely leave. I think we end up with a fantastic class in the end, but the lack of options behind Davis, Kegler, Brown is a concern.. And we need more than just a good class to be nationally relevant next year, we need a stellar class.
