(2016) SG Grant Gelon commits to IU

Recommended Posts

This debate happens every year. Scouts are really good. Rankings are very strong. Can a player outperform his HS ranking? Sure. But 5 Star players are very good. They nearly All start as freshman. Many become pros. The statistic support this strongly.

5 stars are already good enough. But it's no basis in the player they will be in 3 years.

Ok since that was too subtle a way to put it.

Rankings are stupid they do determine how well a player will perform at the college level. For the most part it's their work ethic. How many former 4 and 5 stars did Oladipo get drafted before. If you count the ones that weren't good enough to get drafted. ALot.

and the draft Vic was in has been considered one of the weakest drafts in NBA history. Do you really think Vic would have been chosen 2nd in this past years draft? What about the year before? Do you think there would have been a discussion to take Wiggins or Vic? No. When you go look at ranking you can point out NBA players. Most are in your Top 20. And it starts getting less and less and less as you go down. There have been players in Vic's spot coming out of HS to make it to the NBA. Damian Lillard and Paul George were below 300 I'm pretty sure. But they were only 2 of hundreds. You can't point to one example when there are hundreds that disagree with it.

Perea was a 4 star. Oladipo was a 3 star. Rankings are a crapshoot.

They are to an extent because no scout can watch every player enough to get the rankings 100% accurate.  Generally speaking the higher rated the better.

I saw Perea play at LaLu, not just his highlights, that was never going to be anything but a long road.  VERY unimpressive.  That doesn't make Vic any less of an exception.

I think this is a good thing, and I'm honestly very pleased that Crean went a got a kid like this instead of focusing on "stars."    That's a positive step, I think.   Doesn't take over-thinking the room, just takes a simple understanding of the value a kid like this brings, especially at 6'5".  Every team needs stars, but they don't need a roster full of them.  Not enough basketballs.   Fundamentally sound, smart kids who can shoot are generally winners.

I see what you're saying, but just because a guy is coined a "star" or ranked highly doesn't mean he can't be a fundamentally sound, smart kid who wins. I'm not saying you need a class full of top 10 players, but generally fans like to see guys who are at least ranked in the top 150. Obviously (as with Vic) that doesn't guarantee they will or will not be a good player, as that's just a recruiting analysts best guess. I'm certainly welcoming this kid to Bloomington with open arms and hoping he has a very successful 4 year career, becomes a fan favorite, and helps us bring home some banners. But I'd be lying to you if I said I wasn't a little concerned with taking a player ranked this low this early. Nevertheless, Go Hoosiers!!! I've switched over to Google Chrome so hopefully this works as a reply.

As an individual example.

Perea had 4 star talent. 1 star work ethic and 1 star coaching. The kid was taught to take charges for goodness sake. The LONGEST guy on the court taking charges.

the longest and most athletic guy on the court lol. But with the perimeter defense we had.. I would have just quit the team if I were him lol. But that's beside the point of the thread.

So what do we know about this Grant fella?

Unheralded Indiana player from Crown Point who can shoot. Averaged less points than me in HS. Offers from Iona, UIC, Toledo, IUPUI. 6'4"ish. Mid major talent.

Going to be the next Oladipo.

Along with other noted reasons which are legitimate, does Gary Harris ring a bell?

So many reasons.....

Other offers include Iona, IUPUI, Toledo, Illinois/Chicago. Can you tell me what Emmit Holt's offers were his senior year?  Wouldn't you say he is working out pretty well so far? Grant Gelon also has his entire senior season ahead of him, Holt played all 4 years and still only got mid-major offers.

We could get this kid at any time.  How do you know that? How do you know a lower-tier conference school like Northwestern, Purdue, or Penn State don't offer and land him, rather than wait around to see if IU will offer?

14th rated player in Indiana. So?  What was Austin Etherington ranked? Jeremy Hollowell?  Were you happy with them?

Am I right, we only have 3 guaranteed roster spots next season right? Z, Max, Yogi??  No you're not right.  We have 4 guaranteed and most likely 6.  It's foolish to think they're all going to 4 or 5 star kids.  Our class is not going to be Thon Maker, Deron Davis, TJ Leaf, Rawle Alkins, and Miles Bridges.  We have to have role players too.

I know we think 2 more are gone to Pros/etc..but a lot has to happen.  Not really, Troy will be gone and Blackmon is probably 75% leaving, making it a 5 man class, but most likely 6.

Why rush this????!  Who rushed this?  Crean offered the kid a scholarship because he wants him on the team.  I don't know why this is so hard to understand.

i understand it just fine. High Major elite teams don't behave this way. Just another example proving we aren't an elite program anymore. Indiana should get the Kyle Guys of Indiana.

I don't have unfettered trust in Crean's recruiting like others do. He has been wrong as much or more than he has been right.
