Potential fallout from coaching change

Recommended Posts

Archie is definitely a risk. But he's just getting started so he obviously isn't going to have a stocked resumé. He arguably has done more with less than any coach in the country this year. Read articles about him or listen to anyone in the ranks and they'll say he's one of the hottest coaches around.

And I would argue that sustained March success is the best bet for our next hire, hence my top 2. Maybe unlikely hires, but they're still at the top of my list.

How do you get sustained March success?

To me you need to build a team that wins and competes consistsntly for conference titles, both regular season and tournament. The more you are fighting at the top of your conference the more likely you are to get top seeds, making the route to the final four easier. (Think Calipari with UK in a terrible SEC and Memphis in CUSA, win the conference get a 1 seed make a final four)

Brad Stevens never finished lower than 3rd in his conference. Winning a title 4 of 6 seasons.

Marshall finished in the top 3 in conference 15 of 17 seasons. Winning 17 titles. On an even playing field he translate intonhaving huge success.

Donovan every year they made a run in the dance they were at the top or near the top of the conference.

Tony Bennett in 9 seasons has finished below 4th in conference 3 times, 2 were building UVA. Has won the ACC twice and been to a couple S16's (2 seed this year)
When he has had a top conference team he has made his runs.

Pitino has made his runs when his teams were at the top of the conference. Even his providence team was a top 4 team in conference.

Coach K has had 1 season since 1983 where they finished outside the top 4 of the ACC. Think it's a coincidence they are the standard bearer for what everyone else is trying to be. They win or compete at the top of the conference, giving them better seeds, easier to advance, in turn easier to recruit.

Ultimately we want the same thing. An IU that is competing for a national title. Love the debate.

Yeah I think we're seeing eye to eye on this, just wording it differently. All of those guys you just listed, maybe besides Bennett and Marshall, have all done damage in the tourney on a fairly regular basis. At the same time they're tops in the conference every year. I think that just goes hand in hand with the guys we're talking about. My thing is, I don't know if Marshall is a guy that will be able to sustain the season/March success that a Donovan, Stevens, K, Pitino, etc. have when he gets to the big stage. If we hire him, I'd love nothing more than to be wrong, if we can't get our top 2-3 guys, the coaching change just leaves me a little weary.

Random guy tweets AJ Guyton saying Crean to DePaul is a done deal. Guy is very matter of fact. Tells the doubters to check back in a few weeks. Links an article of DePaul job opening mentioning Crean as an option.

No matter how you look at it, changes seem inevitable at this point. Odd season.

Dude prob just knows AJ is dumb enough to retweet him so everyone sees it. I could tweet AJ that IU and Purdouche are going to swap coaches and he'd retweet it.

Some insight directly from Gregg Marshall regarding whether he will leave WSU.

"Would Marshall, theoretically, like to bang heads with a Mike Krzyzewski or John Calipari?

Sure. He's a competitor at his core. But he'll never take a historically average job relative to its league just to do it.

"The only way I'd leave for [a power-conference] job would be if I had an opportunity to fight on solid ground," Marshall said. "I would want to fight on equal footing."

Translation: Don't call unless you're an AD with one of the best programs in whatever league you reside -- like Wichita State is in the MVC. Otherwise, you're wasting everybody's time."

"His name is Joel Vanags and he starts his day at 5 a.m. ending late into the night. He has two degrees from IU. He bought his first home at 25 without any help. He is in the process of buying another.

He has worked for Koorsen Fire and Security since the day he graduated and is also one of the top Realtors in town.

He has coached a 6th grade travel basketball team and, more important than anything else, Joel spends his time helping others better their lives. You will never hear a negative comment about this amazing man.

Joel makes everyone his friend and, trust me, he has had one of the most devastating years a family could go through but you would never know it.

Did I mention he can cook like no one's business? He is strong, handsome, kind, successful and has the most beautiful loving blue eyes you will ever see.

If you want to be treated like a queen and have the best joy in life then Joel Vanags is your man."

Vote for Joel here by "liking" his photo.
